5 Supplements You Shouldn't Take to Prevent Cancer, According to a Dietitian

Experts encourage getting nutrients from food like fruit, veggies and whole grains instead.
Consider lifestyle changes like limiting alcohol and getting regular exercise to lower your cancer risk.If there's one thing you can take away after reading this article, it's this: Supplements do not prevent cancer. That's the stance of the World Cancer Research Fund, which encourages people to get their nutrients from food, not supplements. 'Overwhelmingly, studies on supplements rarely pan out,' says Hillary Wright, M.Ed., RD, a senior oncology dietitian at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In specific situations, supplements may be useful for filling personal gaps in one's diet, but they're not useful when it comes to preventing cancer in the future, says Wright.
Still, the pull to pop is understandable. 'It can be easier to take a pill than think about how to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet,' says Wright. Let's address five supplements that have been suggested to help prevent cancer and what you should do instead.
Beta carotene is an antioxidant plant pigment that's part of the carotenoid family. (Antioxidants are substances that neutralize cell-damaging free radicals.) Your body converts beta carotene into vitamin A, and it can be found in produce like carrots, dark leafy vegetables, sweet potatoes and cantaloupe.
'The interest in beta carotene came from the observation that people who eat more fruits and vegetables seem to get less lung cancer. However, beta carotene is one singular component of countless compounds that someone's body is exposed to if they eat more fruits and vegetables,' Wright explains.
When research was done on beta carotene supplements, scientists learned that people who smoke and take beta carotene get more lung cancer, and the research had to be terminated, she says. Wright adds, 'From a nutritionist standpoint, it's not surprising that when we cherry-pick a particular nutrient and take it in high doses that don't occur in nature, there may be unintended consequences.'
Vitamin C is another antioxidant vitamin that has had a long history of being linked to immune system support. 'There's been an interest in vitamin C 'boosting' the immune system for decades. I haven't read any science that backs that up across the board,' says Wright. 'There is a lack of evidence suggesting that we should take daily supplemental vitamin C.' (It's a water-soluble vitamin, so you typically urinate the excess, and there's less of a safety risk compared to other supplements like beta carotene.1) That said, eating foods high in vitamin C is a good idea—and in fact, a C-rich diet has been associated with a lower incidence of several cancers, including breast, cervical, endometrial, esophageal, lung, pancreatic and prostate cancer.
Like beta carotene, taking vitamin E may cause more problems than it solves. It's an antioxidant, which is why vitamin E supplements have been linked to cancer prevention. Although there have been studies done on the effects of vitamin E supplements on some cancers, the results have been mixed. Disappointingly, there is not enough evidence that taking vitamin E will help you prevent cancer, and it can increase your risk of certain cancers, particularly prostate cancer, when consumed in large doses.
Vitamin D is considered a hormone that improves calcium absorption in the gut and affects bone formation. We get vitamin D from the food we eat (such as dairy), and our skin produces the vitamin in response to sun exposure. There is no doubt that adequate vitamin D is incredibly important for overall health. 'We have vitamin D receptors in almost every cell in our body—but this doesn't mean that people need to be super vitamin D'd,' says Wright.
When it comes to cancer, while there is evidence that D may inhibit the growth of cancer cells in animal models, there is no data to suggest that this decreases the risk of cancer in humans.9 If you suspect your levels of D are inadequate (a frequent occurrence in the winter months for those in more northern climates), talk to your health care provider about being tested for vitamin D and if a supplement is right for you.
Calcium is a key nutrient for bone health, muscle and nerve function, and blood clotting. In some instances, your health care provider may recommend supplemental doses if you are at risk for calcium deficiency due to your health or diet. However, excess intake of calcium—more than 1,000 milligrams from supplements daily—is associated with a 53% increased risk of cancer mortality, research has found. (Calcium from food was found to be safe.) It's not yet clear why excess supplemental calcium may have this detrimental impact, but the amount of calcium absorbed by the body may differ when it comes from food versus supplements.
Cancer prevention isn't found in a pill. 'Overwhelmingly, diet and lifestyle strategies show the most promise for reducing cancer risk and supporting survivorship,' says Wright. According to the WCRF, 40% of cancer cases are preventable. The following is an evidence-backed list of five of the WCRF's recommendations to prevent cancer:,,
Maintain a healthy weight: Overweight and obesity can lead to chronic inflammation and higher than normal levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factor and sex hormones, which may lead to cancer. The more weight a person carries and the longer they do, the greater the risk.
Be physically active: Getting regular exercise can help manage your weight. Adults should aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week.
Eat whole grains, vegetables, fruits and beans: Vegetables (including beans) and fruits contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and other plant compounds that may help prevent cancer. These foods, in addition to whole grains, may also reduce the risk of cancer by supporting a healthy weight.
Limit fast foods, red and processed meats and sugar-sweetened drinks: The science is clear on the connection between increased cancer risk (especially colorectal cancer) and eating red and processed meats. Red and processed meat may also play a role in increasing the risk of breast cancer and some forms of prostate cancer.
Limit alcohol and don't smoke: Drinking can increase your risk for certain types of cancer, like throat, colon, rectum, breast and liver. Stay within the guidelines for alcohol (two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women). Smoking is responsible for 9 out of 10 lung cancer deaths, but it also raises your risk for many cancers, including bladder, blood, colon and stomach cancer.
Also on this WCRF list? 'Do not use supplements for cancer prevention.' You heard it from the experts.
Dietary supplements should not be taken to reduce your cancer risk. While many are probably completely ineffective (creating only expensive urine), some supplements have been shown to paradoxically increase your risk of cancer. That includes high intakes of antioxidant supplements, most notably beta carotene. Consuming nutrients through a healthy, balanced diet is safe and healthy. Plus, a diet that focuses on plant-based foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes has been shown to be protective against cancers. If you need to take a supplement due to a health condition or dietary need, follow your health care provider's recommendations.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — New rules for lab-grown meat are set to take effect in Tennessee next month. Lawmakers passed a bill this year to establish a permit process through the Department of Agriculture to sell 'alternative protein' in the state. The legislation will also ban the words 'meat' or 'meat food products' from being printed on the label of lab-grown meat products, and create a $2,000 fine for breaking the rules. 'We've heard about cell-cultured protein or lab-grown meat for several years now, and this has become a concern for people among all walks of life,' Rep. Rusty Grills (R-Newbern), the bill's sponsor, said. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → Multiple states have passed legislation banning lab-grown meat, including Florida and Alabama. However, Tennessee lawmakers shelved a bill that would have prohibited alternative protein in 2024, and instead passed legislation to regulate how the products are sold and marketed this year. While lab-grown meat isn't available in Tennessee yet, Dr. Neal Schrick, a professor at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture, told lawmakers that will eventually change. 'I tell students in class they are going to have the opportunity for this in the future, it's going to be available, and to me, it needs to be their choice,' Schrick said. Schrick testified to lawmakers lab-grown meat needs to be regulated and controlled. Most of its production process is protected by intellectual property, making it impossible to know everything inside the product. The process that is known is complex. 'Now they're using what they call scaffolding, which allows us to put the muscle fibers and the adipose or marbling, like we like to see in a good steak, be able to stack it, and you also see on that slide what they call 3D bioprinting, so that's where the technology is going,' Schrick said. In addition, lab-grown meat cannot filter out antibiotics on its own, which experts believe is cause for concern. 'We've asked that question. How are you going to remove it? There's no liver, there's no kidney, how are you going to clean this antibiotic? We have yet to get an answer,' Schrick said. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tuesday, July 1, a number of laws passed by the Tennessee General Assembly in recent years take full effect. From allowing online boating license exams to increasing the penalties for drunk driving to combatting AI-generated deepfakes, these are some of the laws set to be fully enforced as of July 1. House Bill 995 by State Rep. Iris Rudder (R-Winchester) extends the immunity provisions for persons seeking medical care for themselves or others in the event of a suspected alcohol overdose. Tennessee already has a Good Samaritan provision for those experiencing a suspected drug overdose who seek medical attention. This law allows for alcohol-related misdemeanors like public intoxication and those drinking under the age of 21 to be covered under the Good Samaritan provision. The law was inspired by a constituent of Rudder's who lost her 18-year-old brother to an alcohol overdose at a party. According to House Republicans, the teen's friends were afraid they would get in legal trouble if they called for help for him since they were under the legal drinking age. House Bill 530 by State Rep. Rick Eldridge (R-Morristown) allows Tennessee citizens to take their boating safety exam online by eliminating the current monitoring requirement. Previously, citizens were required to take the exam in-person under the supervision of a proctor. Part of the new law allows for online testing access for those in rural areas, and also provides working individuals a 'flexible solution' if they work during standard business hours, according to a spokesman for the House Republican caucus. House Bill 141 by Rep. Michael Hale (R-Smithville) aims to protect consumers from excessive charges when canceling service contracts for cable, internet or phone plans. The bill prohibits service providers from billing customers for an extra billing cycle if the contract is canceled during the first half of the cycle. Should a customer cancel their plan in the second half of the billing cycle, providers would be able to charge for the remaining days and one additional billing term. | READ MORE | Companies that fail to comply would be subject to penalties from the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act of 1977. This bill by Rep. Rusty Grills (R-Newbern) establishes new rules for 'alternative proteins' sold in Tennessee. Passed in 2024, the law prohibits any 'cell-cultured protein or lab-grown meat' from being marketed as 'meat' or 'meat food products' in the state. Though not yet available in Tennessee, state lawmakers followed the path of other states in passing strict rules for the potential protein, including Florida and Alabama. Only two companies in the U.S. are currently authorized to produce lab-grown chicken. Two laws passed by state Republicans, House Bill 72 and 751, aim to protect children from exposure to substances like fentanyl or hemp-derived products Tennessee 'PEACE' Act signed by Gov. Bill Lee House Bill 72, by Rep. Dan Howell (R-Cleveland), establishes a minimum sentence of 48 consecutive hours in a county jail or workhouse and a fine of at least $500 for people convicted of selling or distributing products like THC gummies to people under the age of 21. According to East Tennessee Children's Hospital, more than 250 children were treated for 'cannabis poisoning' between July 2023 and June 2024. House Bill 751 by Rep. Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) enhances already established penalties for exposing a child to fentanyl. Specifically, it creates a Class E felony for anyone who does so, and elevates the crime to a Class B felony if the child is under 8 years old. According to House Republicans, Poison centers in the U.S. managed 539 cases of children under 6 being exposed to fentanyl in 2023. House Bill 1050 by Rep. Antonio Parkinson (D-Memphis) holds businesses accountable if they enable or ignore criminal activity on their premises. The criminal activity could be 'ongoing violence, drug sales, and other public safety hazards,' per the law. The law also offers relief for neighborhoods plagued by problem establishments by 'streamlining the nuisance business closure statutes' and giving residents and other businesses in the same ZIP code the ability to receive statutory damages. Hamilton County Rep. Greg Martin passed House Bill 302, which makes it a Class C misdemeanor to park, stop, or leave a vehicle in a way that impedes traffic. The penalty increases to a Class B misdemeanor if the action contributes to an accident. 📧 Have breaking news come to you: → State Rep. Jody Barrett (R-Dickson) attempted to make the act of blocking a highway during a protest a felony in February of 2024, but the measure failed due to lack of funding. Rogersville Republican Rep. Gary Hicks passed House Bill 482, which adds prostate, breast and pancreatic cancers to the list of diseases covered by the Barry Brady Act of 2019. That law outlined specific cancers presumed to have been caused by employment as a firefighter and required them covered under workers compensation. Also covered by the Act are non-Hodgkin lymphoma and colon, skin and multiple myeloma cancers. Passed by Memphis State Rep. Karen Camper, House Bill 537 codifies the 'Law Enforcement's Safer Tennessee Electronic Registration Act.' The law clarifies that law enforcement is required to accept a digital copy of vehicle registration as a valid proof of insurance. Tennessee also allows for digital copies of proof of insurance. Tennessee ranked 3rd most dangerous state for teen drivers House Bill 1025 by Rep. Lowell Russell (R-Vonore) suspends a juvenile's driving privileges for one year if they are adjudicated delinquent for harassment, bullying, or cyberbullying. The legislation expands on a previous law Russell promoted that formally defines bullying, cyberbullying, and harassment in state law. The law also contains an option for first-time offenders to receive a restricted license for use only to drive to school, work and church. House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) successfully passed House Bill 1299, which creates a new legal framework for victims of AI deepfakes to take legal action and receive damages. The law creates a Class E felony offense to 'disclose or threaten to disclose intimate digital depictions with the intent to harass, annoy, alarm or cause substantial harm to the finances or reputation of the depicted individual.' Former Nashville meteorologist Bree Smith championed the effort after she was victimized by such a deepfake. Introduced by Nashville Rep. Bob Freeman, the law expands the offense of unlawful photography to include any unauthorized photograph that a defendant knows would include the 'unclothed intimate area' of a victim or the victim engaged in sexual activity. The law also allows victims to receive orders of protection if they have been subject to, threatened with, or placed in fear of unlawful photography. The law was inspired by dozens of Nashville women who were victimized by a man who had a hidden camera disguised as an alarm clock in his bedroom. The women all dated Matthew Vollmer and later discovered he had taken photos and videos of their sexual encounters without their knowledge. Many of the women were unable to press charges against him due to previous statutes of limitations, prompting lawmakers to act. ⏩ Championed by Lamberth, the PEACE Act makes particular changes to current state law to address 'hate littering' and trespassing, as well as police procedure, obstruction and road safety. The full title is the Protecting Everyone Against Crime and Extremism and it stems from the Neo-Nazi marches in downtown Nashville in 2024, as well as the subsequent targeting of a synagogue by anti-Semitic groups. The bill makes it illegal to leave a hate-filled flyer in neighborhoods, hang banners from overpasses and bridges, ride in the back of a box truck, refuse to give one's name or give the wrong name to police, and getting within 25 feet of an officer after being asked to back up. Nashville State Rep. Caleb Hemmer passed House Bill 24, which increases the penalties for those convicted of certain animal-related crimes. Specifically, the law makes removing a wild animal, wild fowl, or fish while trespassing on land a Class B misdemeanor rather than a Class C misdemeanor.
