Neena Gupta says 'I've never been in love' — Anupam Kher recalls watching her from a far at NSD!
Anupam Kher
and
Neena Gupta
, who were classmates at the National School of Drama (NSD) in the late 1970s, have shared a long and layered professional journey. Years after their student days, they reunited for Rakesh Bedi's acclaimed stage play Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha, and later appeared together in two 2022 films—Sooraj Barjatya's Uunchai and Ajayan Venugopalan's Shiv Shastri Balboa.
Now, the duo returns to the screen in
Anurag Basu
's upcoming film Metro… In Dino, a spiritual successor to his 2007 anthology Life in a... Metro. In the film, they portray former college mates whose youthful affection never blossomed—until they reconnect decades later at a reunion, reigniting a sense of what might have been.
A Candid Conversation: NSD, Nostalgia, and New Beginnings
In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, the two actors reminisced about their NSD days, their views on love and heartbreak, and their current relationship with the city of Mumbai.
When asked if they remembered the moment they first met, Anupam shared:
'At the National School of Drama, the boys and girls stayed in the same hostel. She was a year junior to me. I first saw her when she came to the sink to wash her glass. I also used to watch her walk to a shop near Mandi House. I wasn't the kind of guy who'd get noticed. She was hard to miss. I'm pretty sure she doesn't remember me.'
On working with Anurag Basu's famously impromptu style, Neena said:
'Yes, we're used to last-minute dialogues.

We don't need to say 'Excuse me' and go to a corner to memorize lines. We can do that on the spot, especially if it's in Hindi. If it's in English, I might take a little longer. But this film was in Hindi, so we were happy.'
Anupam echoed her thoughts on the director's approach:
'Anurag's characters come from everyday life. We already understood our characters. Without realizing it, we worked the way we do in theatre. Even Shiv Shastri Balboa had that quality—it could easily be turned into a play.
That's the advantage of being experienced and trained actors—we bring our own layers to the work, something not always possible in commercial cinema.'
On Love, Loss, and Life
Both actors have evolved their own philosophies on love over the years.
Neena believes she has only known one true love—her daughter.
'I don't know what romantic love is. I only understood what love truly meant when Masaba (Gupta) was born. That's the only kind of love I've felt deeply.
Maybe I'm too practical to fall in love or be loved. I worry a lot and wonder if something's wrong with me. When I watch love stories or Western shows, I question why I've never felt like dying for someone.'
When asked about the time the late
Satish Kaushik
offered to marry her to shield her from social stigma, Neena reflected on the different kinds of love:
'That was the love of a friend. I can fall in love with anyone—my neighbour, my dog, my staff, my cook, my friends.
Sometimes, love in friendship is something else entirely.'
Anupam, meanwhile, takes a broader view of love:
'We often limit the idea of love to just romantic relationships. But love exists between parents and children, siblings, friends, and even pets. A love story doesn't have to be just about a man and a woman.'

‘Sitaare Zameen Par' beats ‘Ghajini' to Become Aamir Khan's 6th Biggest Hit at the Box Office
Aamir Khan is back. His film Sitaare Zameen Par is a box office success. The movie earned Rs 122.65 crore. It beat Ghajini's record. Sitaare Zameen Par shows Aamir's strong connection with the audience. The film did well in its second weekend. It might challenge Thugs of Hindostan next. New film releases could affect its run. Aamir Khan 's latest film Sitaare Zameen Par has officially crossed a major milestone at the box office, becoming the sixth biggest hit of the superstar's career in terms of Hindi net collections. After ten days in theatres, the emotional drama has raked in Rs 122.65 crore across all languages, with its Hindi version alone contributing Rs 121.88 crore. With this the film has surpassed the lifetime of his 2008 blockbuster Ghajini (Rs 114 crore), which for years was considered one of the benchmarks of success in Indian cinema as it was the film which opened the Rs 100 crore club. Exclusive | Kajol CANDID On Horror Fears and Son Yug's Voice Debut In 'Karate Kids: Legends' This achievement marks a significant comeback for Aamir Khan after the underwhelming performance of Laal Singh Chaddha in 2022, which had netted only Rs 61.12 crore in Hindi during its theatrical run. Sitaare Zameen Par not only brings him back into box office form but also re-establishes his connect with audiences, especially in the emotional and socially conscious storytelling space — something that has been his stronghold since Taare Zameen Par. SZP opened to a solid Rs 10.7 crore on its first Friday and saw tremendous growth over the weekend, collecting Rs 20.2 crore on Saturday and Rs 27.25 crore on Sunday. Even though there was a predictable dip on Monday and Tuesday, the collections held steady mid-week and gained momentum again during the second weekend, with Rs 14.50 crore on its second Sunday (early estimates). This strong hold suggests that word-of-mouth is working in the film's favour. The success of the film showcases strong audience pull and brand loyalty to Aamir Khan's style of placed at number six on Aamir Khan's list of top-grossing films, Sitaare Zameen Par sits just behind Thugs of Hindostan (Rs 145.55 crore), and ahead of iconic titles like Ghajini (Rs 114 crore), Talaash (Rs 93.61 crore), Taare Zameen Par (Rs 62.95 crore), and Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.12 crore). As the film enters its second week, the path ahead seems promising. If the current trend continues, Sitaare Zameen Par could even challenge Thugs of Hindostan for the fifth spot by next weekend. This would be despite Anurag Basu releasing his Metro … In Dino starring Aditya Roy Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan along with Akshaye Khanna 's Akshardham as both new films have failed to generate any major buzz.

Metro... In Dino: Ali Fazal Shares Insight Into His Rigorous Prep In Anurag Basus Film
Mumbai, June 30 (IANS) Actor Ali Fazal, who is gearing up for the release of his film, 'Metro... In Dino,' opened up about the intense preparation he underwent to portray the role of a musician in the romantic drama. From music training to character immersion, Fazal shared how the role pushed him to explore new creative depths. Speaking about his role, he shared, 'Playing a musician is not just about holding a guitar and pretending to strum, sometimes yes it is. But sometimes it's all real. I believe that authenticity is everything, especially in a film like Metro… In Dino, where the story is deeply rooted in human emotions and music is a part of the character's soul. When I played a guitarist in 3 Idiots, it was just a cameo—more of a fun, quick moment. But this time, my character is a musician at the core, and that comes with a responsibility to do justice to the role. There were chords i could play, chords i couldn't play. But it's Basu Da frame. So you have to make sure you give it your all.' Giving an insight into his preparation, Ali added, 'I spent over a month taking lessons with a professional guitarist, not just to learn chords but to understand the instrument, the body language, the relationship between a musician and his guitar. It's not easy; your fingers hurt, and it takes real dedication. But I wanted to make sure that every time I played on screen, it felt honest—not just to me but to the audience.' 'Anurag Basu's stories are always layered, and I felt that if I didn't dive deep into this part, it would be a disservice to the character and to the film. I've always believed that music is a universal language—it connects us in ways that words sometimes can't. That's what I wanted to capture. I hope audiences can feel the effort and love I've poured into this role,' Ali Fazal further explained. 'Metro… In Dino,' directed by Anurag Basu, also stars Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, and Fatima Sana Shaikh. The upcoming romantic musical drama is slated to hit theatres on July 4.
