
Netflix-Naver, Tving-Baemin? Streaming wars take new shape
South Korea's streaming services have realized that their survival hinges on more than just offering compelling content -- platforms are increasingly turning to strategic brand partnerships to combat subscriber churn and fuel growth.
Korean streaming platform Tving is set to unveil a bundled membership offering in collaboration with Baedal Minjok, the nation's top food delivery app, starting June 2.
The combined membership, which marks the first time for a Korean streaming service to partner with a food tech company, merges Baemin Club's paid subscription benefits -- free delivery, exclusive coupons and discounts -- with Tving's ad-supported standard tier.
Subscribers to Baemin Club will now be offered access to Tving's ad-supported plan at an extra cost of 3,500 won ($2.50) per month. Tving's ad-supported plan, which costs 5,500 won on its own, allows users to watch Tving content with intermittent ad breaks.
Meanwhile, Coupang Play is also gearing up to launch South Korea's first free ad-supported streaming service this June. Under the new model, Coupang members will gain free access to Coupang Play's content library in exchange for viewing pre-roll and mid-roll advertisements.
The new model grants regular Coupang members access to both Coupang and Coupang Eats delivery services, as well as to Coupang Play's ad-supported plan.
This shift toward hybrid models, as well as a pioneering move to waive monthly fees, comes after Netflix's collaboration with Naver, which debuted last November.
The partnership, branded as the Naver Plus Membership (4,900 won), gives subscribers free access to Netflix's ad-supported tier, along with bonus Naver Pay points and redeemable cookies for webtoon and series rentals on Naver Webtoon. Currently, Netflix's ad-supported plan without a Naver Plus Membership costs 7,000 won.
Netflix Korea's decision on May 10 to raise prices across all its plans, while maintaining the Naver-Netflix membership at 4,900 won, underscores the significance of the alliance for subscriber retention.
The new partnerships and free ad-supported options come in response to a plateauing streaming market. According to a report from the Korea Creative Content Agency released in December 2024, free streaming service usage surged from 78.2 percent in 2023 to 85.1 percent last year, whereas paid service penetration stalled, inching down from 55.2 percent to 53.4 percent.
'The streaming service market has matured to a point where relying on one or two breakout hits to drive growth is no longer viable,' said an insider from a Korean streaming service, speaking on condition of anonymity.
"Subscriber behavior tends to be substitutive -- when users sign up for a new service, they often cancel an existing one. Right now, domestic streaming platforms are seeing their user base level off at some 30 million, with growth largely tapering off," he said.
This is forcing platforms to pivot their strategies to justify escalating content investments, he pointed out, adding that platforms are targeting subscribers of other popular brands in a bid to expand their market shares.
However, partnerships between diverse platforms may come with unintended downsides. Alongside the appeal of low subscription fees may lie a trade-off, in which businesses onboarded onto retail platforms such as Baemin and Naver Shopping may face higher commission rates and shrinking profit margins.
Additionally, consumer choice may become increasingly limited. As competition among platforms grows, the lock-in effect strengthens, making it harder for users to switch services. The reduced flexibility narrows consumer options, and over time, even as discounts fade or service quality declines, users may be forced to remain with the platform they originally chose.

Seoul's top trade envoy set to visit US for 'mutually beneficial' trade talks
South Korea will work to establish a new "mutually beneficial" strategic partnership with the United States through bilateral trade negotiations, Seoul's chief trade negotiator said Friday, as he departed for Washington for tariff talks ahead of the expiration of a 90-day pause on US reciprocal tariffs. "Based on the progress made in the consultations so far, we will do our utmost to ensure that Korean companies are not placed at a disadvantage compared to other countries with the imposition of reciprocal tariffs," Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo said at Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul. "We will use this tariff negotiation as an opportunity to establish a new framework for a mutually beneficial strategic partnership between South Korea and the US," he added. During his trip to Washington this weekend, Yeo is scheduled to hold talks with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and other senior US trade officials to speed up negotiations as the deadline for the resumption of the Donald Trump administration's reciprocal tariffs approaches. The trip comes just a week after Yeo met with his US counterpart in Washington, where he highlighted Seoul's commitment to "good-faith" trade talks with the Trump administration. During this week's visit, the Korean trade chief plans to discuss potential partnership to support a "manufacturing renaissance" in the US and exchange opinions on key trade issues raised by the US, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. During a parliamentary session earlier in the day, Yeo said the US has asked for greater access to South Korea's agriculture, automotive, digital and service markets in recent bilateral trade consultations. The trade minister did not provide further details on Washington's requests, which appeared to reflect issues raised in the USTR's recent report on foreign trade barriers. The USTR report had pointed to a number of non-tariff trade measures by Seoul, including an import ban on American beef from cattle aged 30 months or older, emission-related regulations on imported cars, proposed online platform regulations and restrictions on the export of location-based data. "The government will respond flexibly, taking into consideration the level of demands from the US side, as well as political and security sensitivities in Korea," Yeo said. "Depending on the progress of the negotiations, we will also actively push for extending the suspension of US reciprocal tariffs, if needed," he added, vowing to accelerate trade talks and reach an agreement with the US "at the earliest possible date." The trade consultations between Seoul and Washington have been centered around six areas -- balanced trade, non-tariff measures, economic security, digital trade, the country of origin issue and commercial considerations. South Korea has been seeking to gain a full exemption or reduction from the Trump administration's 25 percent country-specific reciprocal tariffs, as well as sectoral tariffs on steel, automobiles and other imports, by crafting a package deal on tariff and economic cooperation issues by next Tuesday -- when the 90-day pause on the US reciprocal tariffs is set to expire. Maggie Kang on the iconic scene in 'K-pop Demon Hunters' With traditional gat, glowing eyes and a lethal dose of K-pop attitude, the performance of Saja Boys' soul-stealing 'Your Idol' in Netflix's breakout hit "K-pop Demon Hunters" is the moment that keeps both hypnotized audiences and viewers obsessed, just like the lyrics say. From the candy-colored energy of 'Soda Pop' to a dramatic turn into sleek, jet-black silhouettes, the fictional boy band's transformation reveals their true selves in full demon form. The villain anthem's music video has racked up 11.8 million views on YouTube as of Friday, and the soundtrack currently sits at No. 77 on the Billboard Hot 100, with the film's fictional girl group Huntrix's 'Golden' following at No. 81 as of Tuesday. Director Maggie Kang, who co-directed the film with Chris Appelhans, says the vision for that mesmerizing scene was there from the very beginning. The idea of a K-pop boy group made up of 'jeoseung saja,' or Korean grim reapers, was one of the earliest concepts in development. 'It was the first idea that came to mind when the concept of demons came together with K-pop,' Kang told The Korea Herald on Thursday. 'The jeoseung saja look — the black gat with all-black attire — felt like a very iconic image (but) we haven't seen in animation. So it was definitely something I wanted to feature in the movie. And of course, these guys would be the villains. There was no question.' And because Jinu — the leader of the Saja Boys and the film's main male character — is 400 years old, Kang said she wanted the 'Your Idol' performance to have a more traditional look. 'This is also the moment where the Saja Boys reveal their true selves. There is no more hiding their true nature or their true image, so they are in their demon form,' said Kang. 'We took this idea and modernized it, but the look is generally quite traditional. That was our inspiration.' Creating the performance was not just about historical nods; it also had to be a full-fledged K-pop spectacle. And like a concert director staging a comeback show, Kang carefully shaped the visual flow. The color palette, in particular, tells its own story. 'This is the moment the Saja Boys are luring the audience to the underworld, so we leaned heavily into the demon color, which we establish in the movie as this vibrant magenta,' said Kang. The performance begins with more blues and greens, the colors of the demon world where we first meet Jinu at the beginning of the movie. Then comes the visual crescendo: stark silhouettes in black set against a red-hot backdrop, and finally, purple flames of Gwima, the demon king who thrives on the souls of humans, appear as a visual effect. 'For the last stage that starts with Baby Saja's rap, we start to really push the magenta because this is when Gwima bursts into our world and is taking over.' Kang said it was important that every moment carry both narrative weight and concert-level flair. '(Story-wise,) this is also a concert, so at every stage we pushed everything to look very K-pop and have the spectacle of a real concert or music video,' she said. 'Everything had to serve the story of the moment first, but it also needed to have the cool, fashion editorial feel. It was all very challenging to do, but worth the effort, and I believe we pulled it off.' In the two weeks following its release on June 20, the film has made waves. Its soundtrack and music videos have climbed the charts, K-pop idols have uploaded song covers and dance challenges featuring Huntrix and the Saja Boys' choreography, and related merchandise is flying off the shelves. For director Kang, the response has been both overwhelming and deeply meaningful, especially from Korean audiences. 'I worried a lot about what Koreans would think about this movie, if I was representing our culture correctly, whether I was the right person to make this kind of movie. So to see all this love for the film … I couldn't be more thankful,' she said. 'It's been great to see people who are not fans of K-pop, or don't know anything about it, become fans of the film. It really goes to show you that if you put passion and love into something, it can appeal to a bigger audience.'

UK's premium automaker unveils Korea-themed limited collection Ignition Sphere McLaren unveiled a Korea-inspired limited edition of its hybrid supercar, the Artura Spider, in Seoul on Friday as the UK's premium auto brand officially marked a fresh beginning for its Korean office with a new local dealership partner, Britannia Auto. 'Today marks more than the reopening of McLaren in Seoul,' said Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer, chief commercial officer at McLaren, during the Artura Spider launch ceremony held at Banyan Tree Club & Spa Seoul. 'It marks a renewed commitment to this market, to our owners and to the future of McLaren in Korea. McLaren has always stood for cutting-edge technology, craftsmanship and pure performance. And Korea has always been a market where passion for these values runs deep.' Dubbed a next-generation supercar, the McLaren Artura Spider features a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with a powerful V6 petrol engine that enables the speedster to reach 100 kilometers per hour in just three seconds from standstill, 200 kph in 8.4 seconds and 300 kph in 21.6 seconds.
