ECI Rejects Rahul Gandhis CCTV Footage Demand, Cites Voter Privacy Concerns
Safeguarding the privacy and security of voters is non-negotiable, and video footage of voting cannot be shared with political parties or any petitioner unless ordered by a competent court. The ECI's clarification on CCTV footage sharing comes amid Rahul Gandhi's allegations of "fixed elections" and claims of being denied access to information about voter lists and election footage.
In a point-by-point rebuttal of LoP Rahul Gandhi's concerns, ECI sources explained the logic behind destroying CCTV footage of a poll after 45 days and the importance of protecting the right of secrecy of electors by not sharing video footage.
An ECI insider said, 'Maintaining privacy and secrecy of the elector is non-negotiable and the ECI has, never in the past, compromised on this essential tenet which is laid down in the law as well upheld by the Supreme Court.'
The ECI sources also cited a Supreme Court observation which said: 'Giving right to a voter not to vote for any candidate while protecting his right of secrecy is extremely important in a democracy'.
Clarifying that violation of secrecy of voting is punishable up to three months' imprisonment, ECI sources said that the poll panel is legally bound and committed to protecting the privacy of the electors and the secrecy of voting.
'So, video footage from the polling station cannot be given to any person, candidate or NGO or any third party without the express consent of the elector(s),' said a source.
On LoP Rahul Gandhi's latest grudge about the destruction of CCTV footage after just 45 days instead of one year, an ECI source said the poll panel was under no obligation to retain the footage for more than 45 days in case of an unchallenged election.
An ECI source said, 'The Election Commission retains the CCTV footage, which is purely an internal management tool and not a mandatory requirement, for a period of 45 days, which aligns with the period laid down for filing an Election Petition (EP).'
The ECI insider said that since no election can be challenged beyond 45 days of the declaration of the result, retaining this footage beyond this period makes it susceptible to misuse of the content by non-contestants for spreading misinformation and malicious narratives.
In case an Election Petition is filed within 45 days, the CCTV footage is not destroyed and made available to the competent court when asked for, he said.

Mayawati further recalled how Congress governments denied proper reservation benefits to SC/ST communities, and failed to honour BR Ambedkar with the Bharat Ratna during his lifetime, and withheld OBC reservation for nearly 40 years after independence. She alleged that casteist parties collectively weakened the reservation system, making it "inactive and ineffective." In contrast, she said, BSP has always been the true well-wisher of these communities and ensured security, dignity, and welfare during its rule in Uttar Pradesh. "The interests of Bahujans lie only in the guarantee given by the BSP. Dalits, tribals, and OBCs should not be misled by the Congress, SP, or any other party. Their happiness and prosperity depend on supporting BSP," Mayawati asserted.

Orissa HC issues SOP for judicial officers on extension pleas in time-bound cases, bars direct SC communication
CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has issued a standard operating procedure (SOP) for judicial officers across the state to streamline the process of seeking extensions in time-bound judicial matters, following directions from the Supreme Court. The move is aimed to bring uniformity and transparency to the extension process in time-bound cases, ensuring judicial discipline and institutional oversight in compliance with the Supreme Court's directive. The SOP, notified by registrar general Asanta Kumar Das, is in response to observations made by the apex court in a case on May 23. The court expressed concern over direct communications from trial court judges to its registry, a practice deemed 'wholly unacceptable'. It clarified that such communications must be routed through the high court's registry. The newly issued SOP mandates that all judicial officers, including district judges and judges of family courts, must submit extension requests via official email and regular mode to the registrar (judicial) of the high court. These requests must include case details, current status, reasons for delay and the period of extension sought, formatted as per a prescribed annexure. For cases monitored by the Supreme Court, the high court registrar (judicial) will forward the request to the appropriate officer in the apex court's registry. Direct communication by any presiding officer with the Supreme Court registry is strictly prohibited. The SOP emphasises accountability, stating that repeated or unjustified delays may invite administrative scrutiny. Further, district judges and the registrar (judicial) are tasked with monthly monitoring of such cases and maintaining records for periodic reporting to the court.

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, stating that his recent apology regarding the caste census was merely a delayed realisation after years of the party undermining the welfare of Other Backwards Classes (OBCs). Chouhan's remarks came a day after LoP Rahul Gandhi, while addressing the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' organised for the OBC community, admitted that not conducting a caste census earlier was his mistake. LoP Rahul Gandhi had said, "I regret that if I had known more about your history and issues, I would have got the caste census conducted. That is my mistake and not that of Congress. I am going to correct that mistake now." Responding to the statement, Chouhan told reporters, "Rahul Gandhi always understands things too late. First, he apologised for the Emergency, then for the 1984 Sikh riots, and now to the OBC community. But what has Congress ever done for the OBCs?" "Let them answer who shelved the Mandal Commission report. Congress has consistently suppressed efforts for OBC welfare, and then issued apologies after the damage is done," he said. "Their mindset borders on anti-national. In opposing the Prime Minister, they have begun opposing the country itself. They echo Pakistan's narrative -- Pakistan even cites their statements as examples on global platforms. But we stand humbled before the valour of our armed forces," Chouhan said.
