Ex-NSC DG Abdul Rashid named CEO of MASOC for ASEAN Para Games 2027
KUALA LUMPUR: Former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Abdul Rashid Yaakub has been appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysia SEA Games Organising Committee (MASOC) and ASEAN Para Games 2027.
The announcement was made by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh in a Facebook post today.
Hannah said Abdul Rashid's appointment takes effect today, and his main responsibility will be to lead the secretariat in coordinating all aspects of preparations for the biennial regional games.
'Abdul Rashid, 61, has extensive experience in Malaysian sports, having been directly involved for over 37 years and holding various positions in the NSC before retiring as director-general in early April 2025.
'He also played a key role in assisting MASOC in management during Malaysia's previous hosting of the SEA Games in 2017,' she said.
In addition to Kuala Lumpur, the 2027 SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games will also be co-hosted by three other states, namely Sarawak, Penang and Johor.

FAM chief responds to accusations of secrecy
KUALA LUMPUR: The foreign-born naturalised players have come to Kuala Lumpur, played for Malaysia and have gone back to where they came from. Yet, the debate over their ancestry, their lineage, their connection to Malaysia refuses to go away. It's an unusual situation, in fact, something which Malaysian football has never experienced. Some fans can't pronounce the names of their national players, some have problems remembering who is who and from where. And some fans have accused the FA of Malaysia (FAM) of keeping the lineage of the heritage players under wraps. In response, FAM president Datuk Joehari Ayub said the lineage and ancestry of the new heritage players have been verified. FAM had earlier announced that five new heritage players — Facundo Garces, Imanol Machuca, Jon Irazabal, Joao Figueiredo and Rodrigo Holgado — were cleared by Fifa. And they played key roles in the 4-0 win over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier in Bukit Jalil last month. However, FAM has not revealed the lineage of these players, or how are they related to Malaysia, leaving fans in the dark. Joehari said the players' backgrounds were vetted and cleared by Fifa, and FAM has no reason to conceal any information. "We are not taking this lightly. Fifa has checked everything, and at FAM, we are merely following the procedures and directives set by them. "If we need to reveal it, we have no problem doing so." Joehari said FAM has always prioritised transparency and will not take shortcuts when it comes to recruiting foreign-born players, particularly in terms of eligibility and compliance with international regulations. "If there were any issues, Fifa would not have granted approval. In this case, everything was cleared and done through the correct process," he said.

Petrol, diesel smuggling slows as authorities clamp down at border
TUMPAT: Heightened enforcement by border security agencies along the Malaysia-Thailand border has led to a significant decline in petrol and diesel smuggling activities. A check at several petrol stations in the district revealed that the once-frequent activity of purchasing subsidised fuel for illegal cross-border trade has slowed noticeably, despite continued demand for fuel across the border. A source said many fuel smugglers have either temporarily suspended operations or shifted to alternative forms of smuggling following persistent enforcement efforts by agencies, especially the General Operations Force. "The enforcement presence is much tighter now. "Many regular smugglers have gone quiet. "Some are taking a break, others have moved on to smuggling different goods, and a few have quit the trade entirely," the source said. Checks also showed that only a handful of 4WD vehicles, commonly used by smugglers, were observed refuelling at stations near the border. "These are believed to be repeat buyers, who now make smaller purchases to avoid detection. "Those still active in smuggling are buying in small quantities per trip to reduce suspicion. "But overall, the volume of such activity has dropped," the source added. It is understood that while demand for Malaysian subsidised fuel remains high in neighbouring Thailand due to price differences, increased border patrols and roadblocks have made smuggling riskier and less lucrative. Meanwhile, Kelantan Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry director Azman Ismail confirmed the trend, attributing the decline to consistent enforcement actions under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. Last year alone, he said the ministry recorded 240 arrests, with the seizure of nearly 127,600 litres of petrol worth about RM276,400. Meanwhile, about 247,600 litres of diesel worth nearly RM600,000 were also seized, and 460 vehicles valued at RM4.25 million were confiscated last year. As of June this year, he said 102 arrests had been recorded, with the seizure of 25,781 litres of petrol valued at about RM55,365 and 21,353 litres of diesel worth RM61,180. "A total of 221 vehicles valued at about RM1.18 million were seized. "All cases are being investigated under the Act. "Some arrests were made based on referrals from other enforcement agencies, while others were initiated directly by the ministry. "The decrease in this activity is also due to the ban on illegal crossings enforced by the police effective from Dec 1 last year," said Azman.

Bursa Malaysia extends rally, buoyed by construction and tech stocks
KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia extended its rally for the fourth straight day, driven by renewed interest from foreign investors, improving domestic macroeconomic indicators and strong performances in construction and technology stocks. At 5pm, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 8.57 points or 0.56 per cent to close at 1,541.53 from Monday's close of 1,532.96. Market breadth was positive, with 564 gainers outpacing 378 losers, while 476 counters remained unchanged. UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Mohd Sedek Jantan said foreign investors were net buyers on Bursa for the second day in a row, suggesting a possible shift in sentiment due to relatively attractive market valuations. "Notably, sectors with exposure to data centre infrastructure and digitalisation themes led the gains, reflecting structural tailwinds tied to Malaysia's growing role in the regional technology supply chain. "The construction sector also continued its outperformance on expectations of infrastructure rollout and policy continuity in the second half of the year," he said. Sedek expects the US Federal Reserve to adopt a more accommodative approach in the second half of 2025, potentially implementing at least one interest rate cut. "This evolving global monetary landscape, coupled with supportive domestic and regional trends, should underpin investor appetite for Malaysian equities moving forward," he added.
