Mumbai: Deputy Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde
carried out a 'bhoomi pujan' for a project to redevelop a market at Marol on Sunday. The municipal market, located on Marol Church Road in the Andheri (East) area, has a total of 94 licensed vendors with vegetable and fish stalls.
It is being redeveloped by the BMC.
According to a BMC release, BJ Mehta was appointed as the architectural consultant for this project. The proposed plan includes constructing a basement, ground floor, and five additional floors on a plot measuring 1,062 square metres.
The plot, with a permissible Floor Space Index (FSI) of 3, allows for a total construction area of 3,185.80 square metres. A new five-storey building will accommodate the existing licensed vendors on the ground and first floors, while the second floor will be for Project Affected Persons (PAP).
The third, fourth, and fifth floors will house the market hall. For the convenience of customers, vegetarian and non-vegetarian stalls will be located on separate floors.

Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 clock 200 million rides in 39 months

Mumbai: Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 recorded more than 200 million passenger journeys since their launch in April 2022, according to data shared by Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The milestone was reached in just over three years of operations, with current daily ridership averaging over three lakh. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said the numbers reflected a shift in how Mumbai commutes. "The 200 million ridership milestone proves that the people of Mumbai have embraced the Metro as their trusted companion," he said. The two elevated corridors—Line 2A from Dahisar (West) to Andheri (West), and Line 7 from Dahisar (East) to Gundavali—were introduced to ease congestion on the city's western arterial roads and rail networks. Officials say steady improvements in service frequency, punctuality, and integration have contributed to the increase in ridership. Deputy chief Mminister Eknath Shinde said, "This isn't just a mobility achievement—it's a quality-of-life transformation. With every Metro ride, we move closer to our vision of a connected Mumbai, where no citizen is left behind." Rubal Agarwal, managing director, MMMOCL, said, "Our operational teams work round the clock to ensure safety, cleanliness, and efficiency. We're now focusing on the next frontier—enhancing service frequency, onboarding digital ticketing tools, and ensuring last-mile connectivity." Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee called the 200 million mark a strong validation of the agency's efforts. "A consistent monthly growth of 4–5% in ridership reflects how Mumbaikars are steadily opting for smarter travel choices. This is not just a number. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It reflects how well-executed projects can change a city's transport narrative," he said. MMRDA officials said the ridership trend on these lines will help guide future planning, with several upcoming corridors expected to transform east-west and north-south connectivity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Key milestones on the lines were reached on April 2, 2022, when the lines recorded 19,451 passengers on a single day; on Jan 27, 2023, when total journeys hit one crore (10 million); on May 28, 2024, when the 10 crore (100 million) mark was reached; on Jan 4, 2025, the number reached 15 crore (150 million), on July 8, 2025, a record three-lakh-plus passengers travelled on the lines in a single day; in Aug 2025, the network crossed 200 million total journeys.

Mumbai Coastal Road: BMC to rope in civil engineers from multiple departments to meet manpower demand

With civil work for Mumbai Coastal Road's second phase set to begin from September first week, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed roping in hundreds of civil engineers from its multiple departments, as 200-plus civil engineers will be required for the project's supervision. 'To ensure the project is executed seamlessly, we will be deploying civic officials with civil engineering degrees from various departments, including roads, sewerage, and water supply. These officials will be responsible for supervising the contractors and the day-to-day progress of the job, along with other technicalities,' said a senior BMC official. The BMC administration has thus mooted the deployment of nearly 200 additional officers to the bridges department, a proposal that is currently awaiting clearance from the municipal commissioner. Officials said the bridges department does not have adequate manpower for all the projects it is executing. 'At present, there are several other key projects of the bridges department that are ongoing, including Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR). Besides this, there are several other projects of new bridge construction and maintenance of existing facilities that are in the pipeline. We will need manpower for this also. So we have to bank on other departments for manpower,' an official said. The first phase of Mumbai Coastal Road, which connects Marine Drive with the Bandra Worli Sea Link, was inaugurated last year. For the construction and maintenance of this 10-km-long phase, civic authorities had constituted a dedicated department. However, the BMC's bridges department is executing the second phase. Asked why the dedicated department, set up under the supervision of a chief engineer, was not assigned the task of executing the second phase, an official said, 'The department is responsible for the maintenance of the ready phase, and ancillary work like setting up open spaces and creating walkways also remains. Therefore, there will be extra pressure on that department.' Phase two of the coastal road will have a series of underground tunnels, a cable-stayed bridge, and vehicular interchanges that will improve north-south connectivity. BMC officials said the civil work for the coastal road would begin by September first week. This includes the mobilisation of machinery as well as setting up casting yards. The boring of twin tunnels that will connect Mindspace at Malad with Charkop is set to begin from early 2027, and the tunnel boring machine is set to arrive early next year, according to the officials. The proposed second phase of the coastal road has been divided into six different packages. Package A will cover the 4.5 km between Versova and Bangur Nagar (Goregaon), and package B will cover the 1.66 km between Bangur Nagar and Mindspace. The packages C and D will include twin tunnels—3.9 km long—connecting Mindspace with Charkop in Kandivali. Package E will be 3.78 km long, connecting Charkop with Gorai, and package F will cover the 3.69 km between Gorai and Dahisar. From Dahisar, the civic authorities are constructing an elevated corridor of 5.6 km that will extend till Bhayander in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The coastal road will also provide connectivity with GMLR, an east-west connector being constructed by the Mumbai civic body. The cost of these two phases, covering 20 km in total, has been pegged at Rs 20,000 crore. The BMC secured environmental clearances for the project last year and started the on-ground work this year.

PCMC to post draft DP in Marathi for wider reach deadline to send views long over

Pune: The state govt has told Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to translate its draft Development Plan (DP) into Marathi and republish it online for better public understanding. The original draft, published in English this May, was open for public suggestions and objections until July 14. The demand for a Marathi version came from Maval's Shiv Sena MP Shrirang Barne who wrote to the state govt last month stating that many residents were unable to submit their objections to the proposed reservations mentioned in the draft due to lack of understanding of English. In response to his letter on July 6, the state govt, on July 30, instructed PCMC to act on the request, citing instructions from the office of deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde. He clarified that the statutory timeline will remain unaffected and the draft will not be reopened for additional suggestions or objections. Barne, in his letter to Shinde, said, "As per section 4(2) of Maharashtra Official Languages Act 2021, all municipal corporations and councils in the state should do their administrative works in Marathi. The Shiv Sena MP added that govt should intervene to publish the draft in Marathi. The municipal corporation received over 49,500 suggestions and objections from citizens. The civic body has already initiated the process of segregating them to prepare for final hearings which will be conducted by the state govt-appointed committee. As per the standard procedure, the committee will prepare a final version of the draft after hearings, which will be sent to the state govt for final approval. Dhanaji Yelkar, convenor of Swabhimani Ghar Bachao Movement, formed to oppose the proposed HCMTR project in the draft, said there is no point in translating the draft when people cannot object to it. Sanjeevan Sangle, chairman of Chikhali Moshi Pimpri Chinchwad Cooperative Housing Society Federation, said the municipal corporation should allow citizens to file their objections after the translated draft is published. A senior civic official said that DP drafts are prepared in English due to the content's technical nature, and no previous attempts were made to publish them in Marathi. Several municipal corporations in the state recently published their drafts, and all of them were in English, he said. The officer further clarified that there are no legal mandates to prepare these drafts in Marathi. MLAs and MLCs from Pimpri Chinchwad voiced strong objections to the reservations listed in the draft Development Plan (DP), demanding its cancellation. They also raised the issue during the recently concluded assembly session, alleging that the committee responsible for drafting the plan imposed reservations on many residential structures. BJP MLA from Chinchwad Shankar Jagtap said, "The whole draft was prepared using wrong methods as reservations were also proposed on properties where building permissions were granted by the municipal corporation." Another BJP MLA Mahesh Landge said at least 850 reservations from the old DP were again mentioned in the draft. "The civic body has put reservations on many religious temples, which must be cancelled, and the hearings of all the objections must happen in an unbiased manner," he said. Several religious groups also expressed concerns over the proposed reservation for a slaughterhouse in Moshi, located about 4 km from Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj temple in Alandi. In response to the public outcry, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, during a public event last month, announced that this reservation would be withdrawn. Minister of state for urban development, Madhuri Misal assured the legislators that the draft could be cancelled by the CM if it was found beyond rectification. However, she said that it would be wrong to cancel it before conducting hearings on the objections. "Govt will ensure that there is no injustice to anyone when the final draft is approved," she added. Head: Area covers 173.24 sqkm Draft DP for PCMC was published online for citizens on May 16 Citizens had time until July 14 to file their suggestions and objections Over 49,500 suggestions and objections were received from citizens on the draft The draft DP covers a 173.24 sqkm area and was prepared keeping in mind the projected population (Pimpri Chinchwad) of 42 lakh in 2031 and 61 lakh by 2041 What Next? PCMC will segregate the suggestions and objections to avoid duplication Similar demands will be clubbed, and the final list will be kept for hearings A state govt-appointed committee will conduct public hearings on these matters The final draft will be sent to the chief minister for approval Instead of raising the language issue, the MP should have demanded cancellation of the draft. He realised it very late, and it is just an attempt to show that he is doing something for people. If he wanted to, he would have approached his party chief Eknath Shinde, who leads the urban development ministry, and got the draft cancelled Dhanaji Yelkar I Convenor, Swabhimani Ghar Bachao Movement Many people who were unable to understand Marathi failed to file their objections, and they should be given the opportunity as civic bodies are run for them.
