‘Operation Tunnel Buster' nabs cable theft syndicate in Newcastle

The Citizen30-06-2025
A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation led to the arrest of seven suspects believed to be part of a syndicate targeting underground copper cables in Newcastle, KZN.
Newcastle Advertiser reports that Imraan Ghafoor from the Newcastle Fighters Task Team (CCPA) says 'Operation Tunnel Buster' was the result of several weeks of intelligence gathering by a co-ordinated team.
'Law enforcement had been monitoring a group of skilled criminals who were allegedly responsible for stealing copper from critical infrastructure using underground tunnels,' he says.
On Saturday, intelligence confirmed that a group of suspects from Gauteng had joined forces with their local accomplices and were preparing to strike.
Officers continued to keep surveillance throughout the night, and at dawn yesterday morning, just as the suspects attempted to flee the scene, operational teams sprang into action, tactfully intercepting two vehicles.
Ninety kilograms of copper was seized during the raid. A Toyota Hilux single-cab bakkie, a Volkswagen T-Cross, copper-cutting equipment and other incriminating items were also confiscated.
'All seven suspects were detained on the scene. Investigations are ongoing, with several leads being followed to link the suspects to additional reported cases of copper cable theft,' says Ghafoor.
The team included the SAPS Newcastle Stabilisation Team, SAPS Newcastle K9 Unit, SAPS KZN Crime Intelligence, the CCPA, Amajuba District, Crime Fighters Task Team, Ithemba Security and CPI Investigations.
The team was thanked 'for their precision and dedication and commended for their tireless efforts in protecting the town's infrastructure from continued criminal activities'.

Main Reef Road shooting: New information emerges

Police have confirmed that the fatal shooting of Phumelele Jikwayo and the critical injury of his wife, on Main Reef Road near the Angelo informal settlement on June 5, is no longer being investigated as a hijacking. According to Captain Nelda Sekgobela, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni SAPS district, the case has now been reclassified as murder, attempted murder, and theft of a motor vehicle based on new evidence. 'Preliminary investigations reveal that the suspects who shot the couple did not take the vehicle. Instead, they took the victims' cellphones before fleeing the scene. The bakkie was later taken by different individuals after the shooting had occurred,' said Sekgobela. The incident unfolded when the couple's white Toyota Hilux was rear-ended by another vehicle near a shop in the early hours of the morning. Jikwayo exited his vehicle and called a relative to explain the delay. Moments later, gunshots were heard during the call. Police found Jikwayo fatally wounded on the roadside. His wife, who had been shot multiple times, was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The vehicle was discovered abandoned in the nearby informal settlement. Investigators are continuing to follow leads in both the shooting and the subsequent theft of the vehicle. Police are calling on any members of the public who may have witnessed the incident or who have relevant information to come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact Boksburg North Police Station at 011 960 0100 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111. Guesthouse owner shot in attempted robbery

An attempted murder at a local guesthouse in eMalahleni took a violent turn when men posing as potential guests opened fire on the owner, then fled the scene without taking any possessions. According to the police, the attack occurred around 18:20 on July 6 when the owner noticed a white Toyota Hilux, without a visible registration plate, enter the property. A man exited the vehicle and entered the premises, requesting accommodation for four individuals. The owner informed him that rooms were available but noted that due to a power outage, the speed point was not operating. The visitor claimed he would leave briefly to withdraw cash. 'After explaining to the men that the card machine was not working, they responded to me, saying that they would be back in 30 minutes. Two minutes after they left, they came back and entered my premises with firearms. They shot me in the right leg and left with nothing,' said the owner of the local guesthouse, traumatised. The trio fled the scene in the same white Toyota Hilux, leaving behind a wounded victim and taking no property. Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson of SAPS Witbank, shared the following tips: 'Comply, remain calm, and do not argue with crime perpetrators. Do not make sudden gestures. Avoid eye contact, but try to remember how the perpetrator looks by identifying and remembering special features. Try to get away safely from the area as quickly as possible. Do not be a hero, your life is worth more than anything else.'
