What the US flag, Liberty Bell, and bald eagle teach students about freedom

Lessons for students from the US flag, Liberty Bell, and bald eagle
Every July 4, Americans across the country celebrate their nation's independence with festivities that prominently feature the US flag, the Liberty Bell, and the bald eagle. These symbols, deeply embedded in the country's history and culture, carry lessons that extend beyond mere decoration.
For students, they offer a window into the ideals, struggles, and complexities of the American story.
Though often taken for granted, each symbol encapsulates rich narratives that challenge students to reflect on freedom, unity, and resilience. Understanding their origins and meanings can deepen appreciation for the ongoing journey of the US as a nation.
The US flag: Unity and change
The US flag, with its stars and stripes, is more than a colourful banner.
Originally designed during the Revolutionary War, it symbolised the unity of the thirteen colonies against British rule. The thirteen stripes represent these founding colonies, while the stars on the blue canton represent the 50 states in the Union today.
For students, the flag embodies a story of both unity and evolution. As the nation expanded, so did the flag's stars, symbolising inclusion and growth. Yet, the flag has also been a site of controversy — from protests during the civil rights era to debates over flag burning — reminding students that national symbols can inspire both pride and critical reflection.

The liberty bell: A call to freedom
The Liberty Bell, housed in Philadelphia, is famed for its crack and the legend that it rang to mark the first reading of the Declaration of Independence. Though the exact moment of its historic toll remains debated, the bell endures as a powerful symbol of liberty and justice.
Students learn that the bell was used to summon lawmakers and citizens alike, signifying the democratic principles at the nation's core.
Over time, it became a symbol of abolition and civil rights movements, teaching that freedom is a cause that requires vigilance and action.
The bald eagle: Strength and independence
Adopted as the national bird in 1782, the bald eagle represents strength, courage, and independence. Its choice was deliberate — the eagle's soaring flight symbolises the nation's aspirations, while its fierce nature reflects resilience.
However, students also discover that the eagle's journey mirrors the US itself. The bird faced near extinction in the 20th century due to habitat loss and pesticides, only to recover through conservation efforts. This recovery story teaches lessons about responsibility and renewal, urging students to protect both their heritage and environment.
Symbols as living lessons
For students across the US, these icons are not relics of a distant past but living lessons. They encourage critical thinking about history, identity, and civic duty. As President Trump's administration continues to influence the nation's discourse on patriotism and immigration, understanding these symbols becomes all the more vital.
July 4 thus offers more than celebration. It invites students to explore the values, contradictions, and hopes embodied by the US flag, the Liberty Bell, and the bald eagle — a reminder that freedom is a work in progress.

Kids negotiate risky caved-in bridge to reach school in Khunti

1 2 3 Ranchi: For scores of children and their parents, the road to school in the adjoining Khunti district is a risk-filled journey these days. While kids sit on their parents' backs to first climb a 25-foot-high makeshift ladder to get atop a caved-in bridge, grown-ups undertake this daily adventure on their own for the onward journey. The reason? The lone bridge, known as Pelol Bridge, which connects to their school, was washed away in mid-June. With no alternate road so far, hundreds are left with no other option than to undertake these daredevil stunts to reach school, as the school management also halted bus services due to the broken bridge. Rakesh Munda, the father of a Class 4 student, who studies at a private school a kilometre away from the bridge, said that while a kutcha diversion was prepared by the district administration soon after the bridge caved in, that too was literally washed away during successive rains since then. "Not just for these students, even for the general public living in nearby areas, commuting between both ends has become a daily challenge," he said. Munda, a resident of Torpa block, added, "I know it's risky to travel this way, but my kids won't agree to stay at home. Initially, for two days they missed school, but later they became impatient to resume classes. I have no other option than to take them on my shoulders to climb the ladder to reach the top of the broken bridge, and then walk to the school." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ada jeragat, terus nampak tua! Then, we use this ladder put up by locals for daily commute to get onto the bridge for the onward journey." The said bridge, built over the Banai River on the Khunti-Simdega main stretch, is also one of the key connecting roads to neighbouring Odisha. It was built in 2007-08 with an investment of Rs 6 crore. Talking to TOI, staff of Katherine Academy said, "Only in our school, over 100 students are affected due to this broken bridge. People coming from Torpa, Bisna, Angrabari, and beyond have no other option. We had to stop our bus services to these places due to the broken bridge," she said. The area falls under Murhu block. Local block development officer, Ranjit Kumar Sinha, acknowledged the problems but said that a permanent solution will take time. He said, "I too have learnt about people scaling the risky bridge for commute and have requested the local thana to keep patrolling to avert any mishaps or deter people from doing so. A diversion was created as an alternate route from nearby the bridge. Construction of a permanent bridge involves lots of clearances, but the rural development department is learnt to have already sanctioned a new bridge worth around Rs 3 crore. "
