Sean O'Malley praises 'superstar' Ilia Topuria, glad UFC 'didn't make that fight'

Sean O'Malley admits he dodged a bullet against Ilia Topuria after a past callout never materialized.
O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC, the then-bantamweight champion, called for a matchup with then-featherweight titleholder, Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) following a win at UFC 299 in March 2024. It didn't happen, however, and after what O'Malley witness Saturday, he's grateful.
In the UFC 317 main event, Topuria knocked out Charles Oliveira in the first round to capture the lightweight belt. It was a star-making performance from "El Matador," and O'Malley could only offer praise.
"Thank God he didn't accept my callout," O'Malley said on his YouTube channel. "Ilia's a f*cking superstar. ... Thank God the UFC didn't make that fight."
O'Malley expressed interest in seeing Topuria face Islam Makhachev in a super fight next, but with Makhachev slated to challenge welterweight champ Jack Della Maddalena later this year, it's still in the distant future.
After Paddy Pimblett entered the octagon for a staredown with Topuria at the conclusion of UFC 317, however, O'Malley said that's a fight that would have his attention.
"Islam's already fighting JDM, so it's kind of pointless to even fantasize about that fight until that fight happens," O'Malley said. "Ilia vs. Paddy is the fight to make. Simple as that. 100 percent, that's the next fight if it's not going to be Ilia and Islam."

Gregory Rodrigues not worried about critics of second Jack Hermansson punch at UFC 317

Rodrigues' second punch on Hermansson was beyond brutal, but he says he just did his job LAS VEGAS – Gregory Rodrigues met with MMA Junkie and other media members Saturday after his brutal first-round knockout win over Jack Hermansson at UFC 317. Rodrigues (17-6 MMA, 8-3 UFC) knocked out Hermansson (24-9 MMA, 11-7 UFC) to close out the prelims at T-Mobile Arena. Hermansson clearly was out from one punch. When referee Herb Dean didn't get there before Hermansson hit the canvas, Rodrigues let loose with a hammer fist to an already-out Hermansson just as Dean started to pull him away. Hermansson remained out on the canvas for several minutes afterward and had to be under medical observation for more than an hour as a precaution from the knockout. Rodrigues said the punch was just part of the job and nothing egregious. 'First of all, I don't care what the people think,' Rodrigues said of the insta-reaction to the late hit at his post-fight news conference. 'When you go inside the cage, we signed the contract, we're able to do everything. If it was on the other side, and he did the same, why am I going to be mad with him? He did his job. I hope he's OK. He's a warrior like me. But I'm not going to stop until the ref says to stop. I just did my job. That's what I do. That's what he does. It is what it is. It was my night.' Rodrigues won his second straight post-fight bonus for the knockout. In February, he headlined a card against former middleweight title challenger Jared Cannonier and was stopped early in the fourth round. But the TKO setback still got Fight of the Night honors. The fight against Cannonier was a step up in competition for Rodrigues on the heels of a three-fight winning streak, and he came up short. So the win over Hermansson now stands as arguably the biggest of his career, and certainly against his most accomplished opponent to date. Check out Rodrigues' post-fight interview in the video below.

Islam Makhachev's coach: Arman Tsarukyan is Ilia Topuria's biggest threat at 155 pounds

Javier Mendez touts Arman Tsarukyan as the fighter who could pose Ilia Topuria the most problems at lightweight. Topuria (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) became the first undefeated fighter to claim titles in two divisions after knocking out Charles Oliveira to become lightweight champion in Saturday's UFC 317 main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Immediately after the fight, Topuria faced off with Paddy Pimblett, but Islam Makhachev's head coach thinks Tsarukyan could push the newly crowned champion in a way no one has before. "I see Justin Gaethje potentially giving him some problems," Mendez told Submission Radio. "Arman Tsarukyan would be the one that, in my opinion, might give him the most problems because Arman's not going to stand with him. Arman's going to make it a grappling war, so it's going to be a war of attrition. "Can Ilia survive the continuous ground attack that Arman's going to put on him? That would be the test. Can he do that? I don't know. Maybe he can. Look what he did to Charles. Charles came in for the takedown, he freaking switched it on him in midair. That was very impressive." Despite Mendez's high praise of Topuria, during which he called him the best boxer in the UFC, he views welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena as a tougher fight for Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC). "JDM is the tougher one because of, No. 1, the size," Mendez said. "No. 2, he's good everywhere. If it was just boxing, then we don't have to worry as much because JDM's boxing is not as good as Topuria's. But overall, his kicking, his knees, his overall game is very good."
