Ford and other premiers want provincial work permits for refugee claimants. It may not solve anything

Toronto Star2 days ago
With refugee claimants now getting work permits fairly quickly and housing being less of a pain point, why do Canada's premiers want to seize power from Ottawa to issue work permits?
This week, the provincial leaders emerged from the premiers' meeting united in seeking the powers under the Constitution to issue work authorization to asylum seekers, which is currently under the federal government's jurisdiction.

J&K statehood must be restored for Constitutional respect, says Farooq Abdullah

Veteran politician and president of National Conference, Farooq Abdullah, has said if the Constitution of the country has to be respected, statehood for Jammu and Kashmir should be restored and that the recent Pahalgam terror attack could have been prevented had the local government been in charge of the security."It's not a question of being hopeful," Abdullah said in reply to a query about the growing demand for the restoration of statehood in the Union Territory."If the Constitution of India is to be respected, states are never converted into UTs. A UT is converted into a state. The tragedy is that they converted a state into a UT. And what did they achieve?" he told PTI here recalled that "promises" were made when Article 370 was abrogated six years ago on August 5, 2019, that "terrorism would disappear"."Has militancy disappeared? Or has it increased?" he said, adding, "The Centre should answer this in the parliament". Abdullah said that the people were "expecting" that statehood for Jammu and Kashmir would be announced soon. "Already, all the opposition parties are fighting for us also in the have seen recently, (Congress President Mallikarjun) Kharge and Rahul Gandhi's letter to the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) asking that the statehood must be restored." Abdullah recalled that the central government has made promises "to us in Parliament and also committed themselves in the Supreme Court". The veteran politician, who has been the chief minister of the erstwhile state three times and also a Union Minister, questioned the Centre's motive behind "downgrading" the state."And what did they achieve? When they did this, they said that the militancy would die because 370 is responsible for militancy. For the last six years, they have been ruling for all 5 years before the election came. "And even today, they are in control of the security and all the rest. Has militancy disappeared? Or has it increased?" he asked. Reflecting on the current situation, Abdullah lamented the lack of control the elected government has over security and administrative matters and went on to say that the recent Pahalgam terror attack could have been prevented had a local government been in charge of the to admission by the Lieutenant Governor admitting security failure for Pahalgam, Abdullah said, "I am glad the Lt Governor has accepted his failure. He should have had the courage to resign." Abdullah pointed out the glaring silence from Jammu and Kashmir in the Rajya Sabha as four seats remain vacant, terming it a "tragedy"."Why was Jammu and Kashmir denied election to the Rajya Sabha?" he said. "Not only that, two seats are vacant in the Assembly. What is the Election Commission doing?" The National Conference chief dismissed talk of internal discord in the party. "This party is a democratic party. It is not like the BJP, which has become an autocratic party. Here people have the right to speak what they want," he said while answering a question about the difference of opinion between the party and Srinagar MP Aga Ruhullah Pakistan's role, Abdullah's stance was firm. "Pakistan is not going to give up. Therefore, what is the way forward? War is never a solution to any problem," he advocated for a peaceful solution that would be "honourable for India, honourable for Pakistan, and honourable for the people of Jammu and Kashmir". To a question about separatist leader Bilal Lone announcing joining the mainstream, he said, "I am very glad, very happy that they have realised that J-K is a part of India", and expressed the hope that the leader could now contribute to the welfare of the people after "years spent in the wilderness".

New cooperative policy centralises power and snatches rights of State governments, says Samyukt Kisan Morcha

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), a platform of several farmers' organisations, has alleged on Sunday (July 27, 2025) that the National Cooperation Policy (NCP), unveiled by Union Minister for Home and Cooperation Amit Shah on Friday, violates the Constitution of India, centralises power and snatches rights of State governments. In a statement issued here on Sunday, the SKM said the policy lacks the perspective to protect rights of farmers and workers on livelihood, minimum support price, minimum wage and sharing of surplus. The SKM alleged that the new policy is aimed at seizing people's resources, and making cooperatives serve corporate interests and it urged the political parties and State governments to fight the attack on cooperative federalism to protect the Indian Union. 'As per the Constitution of India. Cooperative Societies come under entry 32 of the State list [list II] of the seventh schedule. The Supreme Court ruling on 97th Amendment IXB of the Constitution has categorically said 97th amendment is unconstitutional in so far as it pertains to cooperative societies operating within a single State. The court found that that part of the amendment required ratification by at least half of the State legislatures as per article 368(2) of the Constitution which was not done,' the SKM said. Attack on rights Maintaining that none of the mainstream media has pointed out such violation of the Constitution of India by the Narendra Modi Government and the Union Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah, the SKM alleged that the media justified the planned, dangerous attack on the rights and livelihood of the people as assured by the Constitution. 'The Union Cooperative Ministry is applicable only to the Union Territories and the Multi-State Cooperative Societies. In the true spirit, the Multi-State Cooperative Societies also violate the Constitutional provisions regarding cooperative societies. Such efforts are aimed at seizure of people's resources by the ruling class parties, especially the BJP-RSS. The trend of centralisation of power needs to be vehemently resisted by the people especially peasantry, working class and all other sections in trade, services and manufacturing facing the brunt of corporate domination and exploitation,' the SKM said. The SKM said there is no provision in the new policy to ensure modernisation of agriculture and develop agro based industries and cooperative marketing networks. 'The policy does not contain the concept of producer and consumer cooperatives, collective and cooperative farming to reap the advantage of economies of scale such as reduction in cost of production and leverage of enhancing production and productivity with the support of science and advanced technology thus ensuring generation of employment and remunerative income to overcome the agrarian crisis. Thus the NCP 2025 fails to come up with meaningful proposals for modernisation of agriculture, industry and services,' the SKM said. 'Corporate sector will dictate prices' The SKM said once the domination of agribusiness over agriculture and rural resources is completed, the corporate sector will dictate the market and prices and let loose exploitation on the entire working people across the country. 'If the BJP and RSS leadership is sincere for development of the farmers, workers and marginalised sections, they should insist the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to rather empower the State governments based on the perspective of cooperative federalism and provide 50% of the resources of the Union Government to support State governments and modernise cooperative societies across India. The corporate forces should not be allowed to enter agriculture and agro based industries and markets and Union and the State governments have to regulate the private sector to ensure minimum wage to workers and minimum support price to farmers,' the SKM statement added. The NCP 2025 if implemented will infringe on the rights of the State governments and facilitate corporate takeover of agriculture, horticulture, dairy and fisheries sectors. The SKM demands all the political parties and State governments to oppose the NCP 2025 and fight the attack on cooperative federalism in order to protect the Indian Union and the interests of the entire working people, the statement added.

‘Wants power at any cost': BJP hits back at Rahul Gandhi's remarks on Election Commission; alleges ‘Emergency mindset' still prevails

File photo: Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi (Picture credit: ANI, PTI) NEW DELHI: BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Sunday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his repeated criticism of the Election Commission, accusing him of carrying forward the same ideology that existed during the Emergency. Trivedi said Rahul's statements echo the 'Emergency mindset" of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who believed elections were valid only if she won them. Speaking to reporters, Trivedi said, 'Fifty years ago, Indira Gandhi said the credibility of elections would be proven by her victory. Now Rahul Gandhi says the same thing. The continuous attacks by Rahul Gandhi on the Election Commission show that even five decades later, the ideology has not changed.' As per news agency ANI, Trivedi questioned Gandhi's inconsistent stance, asking, 'Did the Election Commission do a good job in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir, and a bad job in Haryana? According to him, EC's work is good wherever Congress wins and flawed where they lose.' Rahul Gandhi had recently alleged electoral malpractice, claiming his party had '100 per cent proof' that elections were manipulated in a Karnataka constituency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A day earlier, he had alleged elections in India were being 'stolen' and said the Congress had understood how this was being done. The row coincides with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently underway in Bihar. The opposition INDIA bloc has expressed concern that the exercise might lead to mass voter deletions. As per the data released by Election Commission, around 65 lakh electors in Bihar were either deceased, permanently shifted, untraceable or found to be registered at multiple locations. As per news agency PTI, Meira Kumar, former Lok Sabha Speaker and Congress leader, urged the Election Commission to maintain public trust. 'The Constitution has given the EC the responsibility to conduct free and fair elections in a way that builds complete trust among citizens,' she said. Trivedi, while defending the EC, accused the INDIA bloc of undermining democracy. He said, 'They've been winning in areas where demographic changes occurred due to infiltration. Now, with transparency being brought into the rolls, they are protesting.' He further warned that Rahul Gandhi 'wants power at any cost' and likened his stance to that of Indira Gandhi during the Emergency. Trivedi added that the issue goes beyond politics, saying it is about national security and institutional credibility. He also linked the controversy to a broader political shift, saying that under PM Modi's leadership, the BJP and the NDA are gaining momentum across the country.
