The Cook County Sheriff's Office has suspended a ground search for a 40-year-old northern Minnesota man who's been missing since the beginning of July.
Gene Doherty was last seen leaving his mother's home near Silver Bay on July 1. His vehicle, a 2009 Ford Edge, was found on July 11 on Brule Lake Road between Cascade Lake and Little Cascade Lake, part of the Superior National Forest.
The sheriff's office says it's suspending the ground search for Doherty due to challenging terrain, limited resources, and a lack of results from search and rescue operations.
For the past week, authorities have focused on the 451-acre Cascade Lake, where a detection dog pinpointed Doherty's scent at the public boat landing, with crews using boats and sonar to search the water and shoreline.
'We've had a great search and rescue group,' Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen told WTIP. "They give it everything."
The sheriff's office plans to continue searching Cascade Lake every day until July 22. After that, crews will reassess and "maybe try something else," the sheriff told the Grand Marais-based radio station.
"We're going to keep it up as long as we can, as long as resources hold out, and as long as we can get people to do it," Eliasen said.
The Cook County Sheriff's Office, Cook County Search and Rescue, the U.S. Forest Service, and St. Louis County Search and Rescue have been assisting in the search and rescue effort.
Anyone with information should contact the Lake County Sheriff's Office at 218-834-8385, or 911.

Jeffrey Epstein's former lawyer Roy Black dies after illness at age 80

Roy Black, the prominent criminal defense attorney who helped secure Jeffrey Epstein's 2008 plea deal, has died at the age of 80, his family confirmed. Black passed away at his home in Coral Gables, Florida, on Monday after battling an illness, his wife Lea Black told People magazine. 'Thank you for all your blessings,' the Real Housewives of Miami alum wrote on Instagram on Tuesday. 'We will be announcing details for a tribute and celebration in a few weeks.' Black first gained national attention in 1991 when he secured an acquittal for former President John F. Kennedy's nephew, William Kennedy Smith, in a high-profile rape trial – a watershed moment for criminal defense, as the proceedings were broadcast live on national television. The attorney went on to play a central role in Epstein's legal defense as the financier was investigated in 2006 for multiple sex crimes involving dozens of underage girls. Rather than face federal indictment, Black and Epstein's lawyers negotiated a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in 2007, which was finalized in 2008. Under the deal, Epstein pleaded guilty to state charges of soliciting prostitution and soliciting prostitution with a minor and received a 13-month jail sentence and was registered as a sex offender. Black had represented a string of high-profile clients ranging from pop star Justin Bieber to race car driver Helio Castroneves. Most of the time, he was on the winning side, as noted by the Associated Press in their reporting. His clientele and courtroom success made him a regular on the Today Show and Larry King Live. Prominent attorneys and Black's former colleagues have praised him for his exceptional legal skill and courtroom expertise. 'Roy Black was the greatest criminal lawyer of our generation, perhaps in American history, achieving acquittals over a span of 50 years in some of the most challenging and notorious cases of all time,' partner of three decades at Black Srebnick, Howard Srebnick, told the Miami Herald. Srebnick's colleague David O. Markus said that Black was the 'GOAT' – greatest of all time – among Miami's criminal attorneys. 'This one really hurts,' he wrote on his Southern District of Florida blog. 'He was 80. And he really was the GOAT of criminal defense lawyers. There are so many of us that want to be Roy in the courtroom – commanding, persuasive, funny. ' Solve the daily Crossword

Florida teens' dangerous social media challenge has police warning parents, homeowners

Police in Florida issued a warning after a group of minors took part in the "door kick challenge," a social media trend aimed at frightening homeowners. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post that five juvenile suspects were walking around a neighborhood in Riverview, Florida, when two of them approached a house. Officials said one of the individuals, who was wearing a ski mask, kicked the front door and fired an airsoft gun. The minors then fled the area. Deputies said the "door kick challenge" could turn into a dangerous situation and encouraged parents to talk to their children. Deadly Social Media Trend Threatens Kids, Homeowners Defending Themselves: 'Children Are Going To Get Killed' "The door kick challenge is a prank circulating on social media. #teamHCSO is asking parents to speak to their children about this dangerous trend, which could end in tragedy," the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Read On The Fox News App Video released by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office shows an individual approaching the front door before kicking it several times, firing an airsoft gun and then fleeing the area. Texas Bill Pushes Strictest Social Media Ban For Minors In The Nation Titania Jordan, CMO and chief parent officer at Bark Technologies, a parental control app, previously told Fox News Digital that teens are doing this social media trend to get attention. "This sort of content is going to get likes. It's going to get comments. It is going to get shares. It's going to encourage children to try to emulate it because it's clout — they gain clout from their peers because of this," Jordan said. "Any challenge like this, children aren't thinking, 'Is this the right thing to do? Is this safe?' They're thinking, 'I want validation,' and children are going to get killed. I mean, just one person who is armed who gets their door kicked in by a kid, and you're gonna have another national headline that is very sad."
