Enzo Fernandez will be even better next season

But he excelled in the second half of the 2024-25 season, finishing the campaign with eight goals, and has continued to shine at the Club World Cup.

The 24-year-old scored in the opening win over Los Angeles FC and created two goals in as many minutes as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in their final group game on Tuesday.
Their reward is a last-16 clash with Benfica in Charlotte on Saturday.
Maresca told reporters at his pre-match press conference: 'I'm very pleased with Enzo, especially because, first of all, he's a nice boy. He's polite, he's a good boy.
'Then he's worked very well in all aspects inside the pitch, outside the pitch. Our struggle at the beginning was (for him) to understand the way we want to play.
'But he is doing fantastic in terms of numbers, goal assists. This is what we want from our attacking players.
'I've said many times that I prefer to have the attacking players score 10-12 goal each, rather than just a striker with 40 goals.
'So his contribution this season has been top and I am sure next season will be even better.'

Despite that, Fernandez could face competition for his place after Maresca suggested he sees Brazilian Andrey Santos more as an attacking player than a defensive one.
The highly-rated 21-year-old has rejoined the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Esperance.
Maresca said: 'His season has been very good but I think you need time to adapt.
'In terms of position, I see Andrey in this moment in more like Enzo's position than Romeo's (Lavia) position.
'The Premier League demands (players) to be physically strong. In this moment, I see Andrey more of an attacking player than defensive in the field.'
Maresca added that he hopes 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong will stay with the club despite being linked with Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund.
He said: 'My idea or my plan with Josh is quite clear. I think he potentially can be a top defender for this club. I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us.'

Maresca would also like England international Trevoh Chalobah to stay, but offered no guarantees.
He said: 'All the players that are here with us, I don't want to lose them but when the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen – not only for Trevoh, for (all) the 25 players of the squad.'
Maresca expects a tight contest against Benfica.
He said: 'It's going to be a balanced game, a tough game. In this kind of game the small details are very important.'

EPL club 'complete deal' to sign Rangers academy talent

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that an agreement is in place for the 16-year-old striker to join the Premier League outfit. Read more: Newcastle are said to have beaten several other top-flight English clubs to the youngster's signature. 🚨⚪️⚫️ Excl: Newcastle complete deal to sign talent Alfie Hutchison from Rangers, agreement in place.#NUFC beat several PL clubs to secure 16 year old striker for the Academy. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 28, 2025 It comes after Romano recently revealed that Rangers had missed out on the signing of Kwame Poku from Peterborough United. The talented winger has instead opted to sign for English Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Rangers were interested in a move, but as time has gone on, it has become increasingly apparent that the player wanted to remain in the south of England. Romano now reports that a deal for Poku to join QPR is '100 per cent done', after he signed for the club this morning. Although they have missed out on Poku and appear to have lost youngster Hutchison, Rangers completed the signing of Max Aarons during the week. The right-back became the Ibrox club's second summer addition after joining on a season-long loan deal from English Premier League side Bournemouth. He and Lyall Cameron have both been added to new head coach Russell Martin's ranks ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Jurgen Klopp sends warning to Florian Wirtz and admits Liverpool fee is 'insane'

Florian Wirtz's move to Liverpool has smashed the British transfer record after the Reds agreed to pay a colossal £116million for the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Jurgen Klopp has warned new Liverpool star Florian Wirtz that his £116million price tag will put a target on his back. Wirtz, 22, has joined the Reds in a British record-transfer deal, signing a lucrative five-year contract. Liverpool fended off interest from Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid to sign the Germany international from Bayer Leverkusen. Klopp's former club will pay Leverkusen a fixed £100m plus £16m in potential add-ons. ‌ Despite describing Wirtz as an 'outstanding player', the ex-Reds boss can't help but baulk at the fee. In an interview with German newspaper Welt, Klopp said: "There's no question about it, it's an insane sum, and one that a player at Liverpool is aware of if things don't go well for two or three games. ‌ "We all agree that we're talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I'm out if we pay 100 million euros for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is." The 58-year-old went on to hail Wirtz, who has the difficult task of improving the Premier League champions. "I don't know exactly which position Arne (Slot) has Florian in mind for," Klopp noted. "He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen." It's not the first time that Klopp has commented on Wirtz's record-breaking move to Anfield. Speaking to German broadcaster RTL last week, Red Bull's head of global football operations said: "It will be really, really great. I'm sure of it. "It's very difficult to strengthen them when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed that. They've signed an exceptional talent in Florian Wirtz." ‌ Klopp will be able to get the inside track on Wirtz's progress thanks to maintaining a strong relationship with Liverpool. "We're in very good contact - with some of the players who write now and then or send the occasional photo from their holidays," he revealed to Welt. "The owners have become good friends." Klopp also joked: "I've also written to Arne now and then; we've only seen each other once. He was pleased with my gesture back then. And to be honest: when things started off so well under him, I briefly asked myself as a person whether I was happy that things were like this."
