‘My life has been ruined by 80k seat ghost stadium – that could all change if they finish it'

Next to the unfinished skeleton of an 80,000-capacity World Cup stadium, the residents of Benicalap have been left to wonder if the future will brighten in the shadow of its walls.
The Nou Mestalla, lying dormant and derelict for years, symbolised promise and regeneration for this community as a project that began back in 2007.
The stadium aimed to herald a new era for Valencia CF, following their La Liga triumphs in 2002 and 2004, which disrupted the Real Madrid-Barcelona domination. Yet, financial woes led to a stalled project, leaving an eyesore that overshadowed the area for over a decade.
Now, with a hefty sum of £275million secured, Valencia can finally advance with construction, eyeing completion by 2027. This move restores hope within the local population that the problem area tarnishing their landscape might transform into prosperity.

This turn of events rekindles the ambitions long-held by Benicalap residents, as the bleak giant marring their skyline may yet become a beacon of progress, as reported by the Daily Star.

In November 2023, a hotel receptionist in the vicinity said: "Everyone asks about it because it is so big and it is so ugly for the views," whilst another local shared a universal sentiment: "Whatever it is, it is better to have it finished. A building for business, a building for sport, a building for partying, whatever. But it needs to be done... not that."
The grand Nou Mestalla stadium, with its ambitious plans to host 80,000 fans on a site that was once an industrial hub, promised a tourism boom for the residents of Benicalap.
Reflecting on unfulfilled aspirations, a local café owner said: "My mother bought this cafe 15 years ago. She bought it for exactly that point, for the stadium. But we are waiting for them to start again, to have a great business. We are waiting. I hope they will start again.

"This neighbourhood is not so rich. We try hard to pay our bills. We are a working family and we are working hard, but it is not easy."
However, the incomplete edifice wasn't merely a metaphor for missed chances; for some, it represented the excitement of being part of football's legacy. A restaurant owner said: "When someone from outside comes, they always ask about it I am also a fan of football and I love to see something like that.
"I know the story of this but I do not feel like it is unfinished. Fans of football, if they see the stadium, they are feeling something and I feel the same. It is my dream to be near the stadium, near all the players of Valencia and the World Cup and more."
Like others in the area, he looks forward to the potential benefits for the community should the project reach completion. "If they make it, everything will be great," he added.
Valencia planned on entering a new era when construction began on Nou Mestalla in 2007, with a planned capacity of up to 80,000 for the stadium

"Money will come to the people and the businesses here. Fans of football will always be here, hopefully with the Champions League and World Cup, everyone will be here. It will be such a beautiful opportunity for the people here. I wish, I hope that they will do it."
One local resident and avid football supporter expressed concerns about the structural safety if the project continues and mooted the possibility of needing a complete teardown.
He said: "Engineering wise, it cannot be safe, so if they want to build, they will have to knock down the whole thing. It will take time and money. But when you remember the World Cup in Qatar, they did not have the stadiums but in six months, they build stadiums. They can do the same and that is what I wish for."
It seems the residents' dreams are set to become reality, as the Nou Mestalla is poised to be among an array of iconic venues hosting the 2030 World Cup, with plans for the games to take place across Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

The official Valencia website reads: "Valencia CF has successfully secured the full financing for Nou Mestalla - the most significant non-sporting project in the Club's history.

"Scheduled to open in 2027, Nou Mestalla will serve as a global benchmark for modern stadium developments. The modern state-of-the-art stadium will drive Valencia CF's growth and unlock new long-term sustainable revenue streams that will strengthen the Club's influence and competitiveness for decades to come.
"Nou Mestalla is not just a transformative investment for Valencia CF - it will be a landmark and legacy project for the city and is set to become an iconic symbol for Valencia CF fans, benefiting the city of Valencia, its residents, and visitors."

Mexico beats U.S. 2-1 to win 10th Gold Cup title
HOUSTON — Mexico beat the United States 2-1 on Sunday night for its record 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title, with Edson Álvarez scoring a tiebreaking goal in the 77th minute after a video review reversed an offside call. Chris Richards put the U.S. ahead in the fourth minute, heading in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick for the second time in the tournament, but Raúl Jiménez tied the score in the 27th with his third goal of this Gold Cup. Mexico was awarded the free kick when Diego Luna fouled Alexis Vega on a flank. Johan Vásquez flicked the restart across the goal mouth and Álvarez burst past the defense, redirecting the ball from 3 yards just inside Matt Freese's far post. While the play was initially called offside, the goal was awarded by the VAR, and Mexico defended its title from 2023 while improving to 6-2 in Gold Cup finals against the U.S. Patrick Agyemang had a chance two minutes into stoppage time, but he didn't make good contact on his short-range shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Luis Malagón. A sellout crowd of 70,925 at NRG Stadium was about 70% pro-Mexico and booed U.S. players when they walked out for pregame warmups. Mexico dominated with 60% possession and had 12 corner kicks to none for the Americans. This was the last competitive match for the U.S. and Mexico before co-hosting next year's World Cup with Canada. The U.S., which has seven Gold Cup titles but none since 2021, used a starting lineup with only a handful of players currently projected as World Cup starters, missing regulars due to vacation, injuries and the Club World Cup. Coach Mauricio Pochettino used their absence to evaluate players who could push for starting jobs during the friendlies this fall and next spring, and Luna and Agyemang emerged as contenders for World Cup roster spots. Richards put the U.S. in front when he headed Berhalter's free kick from about 40 yards off the crossbar. The ball bounced straight down and just crossed the goal line. Jiménez scored his 42nd international goal, third-most in Mexican history. He burst past the defense and one-timed the pass from Marcel Ruiz, beating Freese from about 10 yards on a shot that might have nicked defender Tim Ream. Jiménez celebrated by grabbing a Mexico No. 20 jersey with 'DIOGO J' in honor of Diogo Jota, his former Wolverhampton teammate who died in a car crash Thursday in Spain. Jiménez ran to a corner, sat down with the jersey and mimicked playing a video game.

‘He lit up a room': Trent Alexander-Arnold pays tribute to Diogo Jota
Trent Alexander-Arnold has described his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota as 'someone who lit up a room'. The Liverpool forward died along with his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain on Thursday. Alexander-Arnold is at the Club World Cup in the United States with Real Madrid having left Anfield at the end of their title-winning 2024-25 season. He spoke to Dazn after Madrid's quarter-final victory over Borussia Dortmund in New Jersey. 'Some things are bigger than the game,' the right-back said. 'It has been difficult but it's been very emotional, very heartwarming to see the footballing world uniting and come together to show their love and support to him and his family, and obviously his brother as well. 'So although it's been difficult, it's also been a nice showing out from everyone, all clubs, all people, uniting and showing love and support for what must be a mind-blowingly hard time for the family. 'I've been … around him and his brother, his family, his amazing wife, his parents, his amazing three children. It's truly, truly heartbreaking to wake up to news like that. It's something that you would never, ever expect. 'He was a very close friend, someone who lit up a room when he was in it. I shared the dressing room for five years [and have] amazing memories on and off the pitch with him. It goes without saying he will never be forgotten by anyone. He will live long in all our memories for the amazing man and player he was.'

Wayne Rooney 'lands £800,000 Match of the Day deal' after Gary Lineker's exit
Match of the Day is said to be welcoming a very famous face to its presenting roster following Gary Lineker's exit. Wayne Rooney has reportedly signed a big-money deal with the BBC in a bid to start a new chapter away from football management. It's said the former England player, 39, has secured £800,000 for the gig, which will see him appear on MOTD for two years with the possibility of an extension. What's more, Rooney should be involved in the show's 2026 World Cup coverage, jetting to the US, Canada, and Mexico to bring viewers the highlights. A source told The Sun about the rumoured punditry deal: 'Wayne is a natural broadcaster; he is warm, witty, and forensically knowledgeable about all aspects of the game. 'He still has a deep love for football and also gets on well with everyone on both sides of the camera.' They added: 'He is eminently likeable and has impressed on his outings to date—viewers have also really taken to him, which has been clear from social media commentary. 'Wayne will be a key part of next year's World Cup coverage, which is a massive coup, and will provide some much-needed expertise on Match of the Day in the wake of Gary's departure.' It's believed that 'everyone', including the Beeb's Director of Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, is 'incredibly excited to get him on board', with the insider declaring it a 'great signing'. Rooney's new MOTD role will reportedly be unveiled officially later this month. Whispers actually began at the start of the year, with the same publication claiming Rooney was in talks for a MOTD slot as early as January. At the time, he was freshly sacked from his fourth management job, having secured just one win with Plymouth Argyle in 14 games. It was later reported that Rooney was looking to venture further into punditry, and it was said the role could've earned him up to £200,000 a year, depending on how many appearances he were to make. But now, that figure looks to have increased drastically. Having already proven he can talk the talk in various guest appearances previously, Rooney's next role is likely a natural progression. It also takes him and wife Coleen one step closer to a total TV takeover, given how she reportedly signed a £10million deal with Disney in March to star in a documentary with Wayne and their four sons: Kai, 15, Klay, 11, Kit, eight, and Cass, six. Rooney is widely considered one of Britain's greatest-ever footballers. Not only was he Manchester United's best goalscorer with 253 goals, but he was also England's record goalscorer from 2015 to 2023. He retired from professional footie in 2021 after being appointed permanent manager of Derby, and now frequently dabbles in punditry. By joining MOTD this year, he is part of a huge shake-up at the long-running programme, which was hosted by Lineker, 64, for 26 years. Lineker confirmed he would be leaving the BBC completely after catching backlash for sharing an Instagram Story about Zionism. More Trending His since-deleted post featured a rat emoji, which has been historically used as an antisemitic trope. The host later issued an unreserved apology for the 'hurt and upset caused' by the video, stating it was a 'genuine mistake' and that he was unaware of the meaning behind it. In his place, Gabby Logan, Kelly Cates, and Mark Chapman will share the presenting role on Match of the Day from the next Premier League season.
