Podcast: Snap Inc's Alistair Burton on ‘brands that win' during Ramadan

Campaign ME28-02-2025
On the latest episode of Campaign Middle East's On The Record podcast, Alistair Burton, Head of Digital First and Omnichannel Retail at Snap Inc, discusses the need for brands to develop a deeper understanding of their audiences, create immersive and interactive experiences, and to use data to optimise and achieve their business goals – especially during Ramadan.
Through this conversation with Campaign Middle East, Burton shares how Ramadan is the perfect point of time when communities come together, relive memories, and share meaningful moments on platforms such as Snapchat to engage and connect with one another. To help businesses connect more meaningfully with their audiences, the app has launched Sponsored Snaps, an ad placement tool that offers businesses the opportunity to deliver full-screen vertical video messages directly into Snapchatters' Chat inboxes.
Snap is also bringing back the hugely popular Snap AR Ramadan Mall and has launched Hazar Fazar, an AR experience made available through branded lenses that brings GCC cultural stories to life.
Snap success: Connecting with hard-to-reach audience and achieving higher average order value
At the outset, Burton explains how the platform has leveraged extremely high smartphone penetration in the Middle East, specifically the UAE and Saudi Arabia, to cater to correspondingly high reach and – more importantly – extremely hard to reach audiences.
'What does Snapchat bring to the table? It brings 25 million active users in Saudi Arabia and 4.5 million active users in the UAE with huge reach across both Gen Z and hard-to-reach GCC audiences, who have a much higher purchasing power. Why does this matter? One of the partners we're working with is getting 39 per cent higher average order value. This is really accelerated during a time such as Ramadan, where people are planning, shopping and connecting more on the platform,' he says.
Burton also alludes to the number of stories being viewed on the platform: 10 billion stories being viewed in Saudi Arabia every day, with GCC audiences opening the app more than 45 times a day. But to truly stand out from their competition and have a meaningful effect on their audiences, Burton calls for brands to connect with audiences.
'Brands that win don't just advertise, they truly connect with their audiences,' Burton says.
Improving top-of-mind awareness, and balancing brand and performance
He also calls on brands to better utilise the platform's technology and data capabilities, especially given that the platform is developing on a daily basis with new products and new features that can benefit brands.
'When you see the top brands in the world, they monitor even a 1 per cent drop in their top-of-mind awareness, for example. This is very significant because they want to be that brand that people think about when they are thirsty, or hungry or have a specific need. The platform helps you maintain that top-of-mind awareness and use data, signals and optimise campaigns to achieve business goals,' Burton adds.
During the podcast, Burton also calls for organisations to find the balance between brand and performance, instead of the current silos within the market that cause these two aspects to be at loggerheads with each other.
'Everyone should be aligned with one 'north star' goal, and that begins with understanding how brand and performance work with each other. In short, having a strong brand that people resonate with will drive better performance, and lower acquisition and conversion costs.'
Leveraging a digital-first strategy on Snap
Burton calls for brands to embrace a truly 'digital-first' approach that goes beyond merely running ads on the platform.
'In terms of how to leverage your digital strategy, brands need to understand four things: first, understand your audience. Second, make sure you're building native experiences on Snapchat. Third, create personalised and immersive experiences based on deep audience insights that the platform provides. And finally, make sure you're measuring and adapting your strategies based on the data.'

UAE-Hungary ties poised for further growth fuelled by tech, investment cooperation: Hungary FM

20 July 2025 22:58 HAMAD AL KAABI AND MOHAMMAD GHAZAL (BUDAPEST)The mutual visits of the UAE and Hungary leaders have added momentum to the growing strategic relations between Abu Dhabi and Budapest, according to Hungary's Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. In an exclusive interview with Aletihad on the sidelines of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to Hungary, Péter Szijjártó said his country always regarded cooperation with the UAE as strategically significant. 'The visit of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in January to Abu Dhabi has given a total new impetus to the relations. 'Since then, we have been witnessing a significant progress - particularly in the growing interest of UAE investors in Hungary and the intensification of trade between the two nations.' UAE investors have shown strong interest in sectors such as healthcare, real estate, energy, and tourism, he said. On the trade front, Hungary has exported more than 900 tonnes of cheese, 15 tonnes of pharmaceutical products, and 18 tonnes of honey to the UAE since January, the Foreign Minister said. Moving to broader trends, the Hungarian Foreign Minister highlighted the importance of adapting to the global technological transformation. 'We understand that the global economy is going through a huge technological revolution. This revolution is being built around the usage of AI and digital applications, so whoever is going to be the quickest and the most effective in utilising AI and digitalisation will be the successful actor in global politics and the global economy in the future. The UAE has been performing very well in these strategic sectors.' He added that the UAE's expertise in the tech sector is an asset for Hungary as it seeks to accelerate its own development. The UAE has always embraced the trends of the times – from the era of pearling to oil, and now to a diversified economy, the Foreign Minister said. 'Economic diversification gives us an opportunity to collaborate. We are also working to transition from a production-driven economy to one that is driven by research and development. For that, we need advanced technological capabilities and rapid adoption of digital and AI solutions – areas where the UAE is a global leader.' The Foreign Minister also pointed to the potential of a free trade agreement with the GCC countries, calling it key for future growth. Highlighting Hungary's investor-friendly climate, he said: 'We offer the lowest corporate tax rate in the European Union, with a single-digit corporate income tax. Hungary also provides a strategic location, and our 'one-stop shop' service for foreign direct investment makes it easy and efficient for investors to manage operations.' He added: 'We offer a wide range of incentives to investors, making Hungary an attractive destination.' The Minister emphasised Hungary's policy of economic neutrality and its proactive approach to attracting investment. 'We aim to bring the world's biggest companies to Hungary. We are heavily investing in creating a world-class business environment.' Looking ahead, he said: 'We look forward to welcoming more UAE investments. Investors from the UAE can count on the full support of our government and benefit from Hungary's favourable business climate.' Turning to regional and international developments, the Foreign Minister reaffirmed Hungary's support for the UAE's global peace campaign and its role as a stabilising force in the Middle East. 'We are grateful for the UAE's smart foreign policy, which has helped stabilise the region's security situation. We all know that instability in the Middle East can pose serious global security risks.' The Hungarian Foreign Minister praised the UAE's diplomatic approach: 'I commend the smart and cool-headed foreign policy of the UAE led by the Foreign Minister, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to ease tensions in the region.' Péter Szijjártó also underscored the importance of global partnerships in combating extremism and fostering peace. 'We must build alliances based on dialogue and mutual understanding. The UAE is at the forefront of these efforts. Mutual respect, trust, and diplomacy can bring lasting results for all.'

DANAT opens registration for Gem-A Foundation and Diploma programs

The Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) has officially opened registration for the internationally recognised Gem-A Gemmology Foundation Programme and the Gemmology Diploma Programme, both accredited by the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A). As the first institution in the Middle East to be accredited by Gem-A, DANAT will offer these advanced academic tracks starting in September, sponsored by the Labour Fund (Tamkeen). Obtaining the internationally recognized Gemmology Diploma Programme certificate unlocks a wealth of career opportunities in the fast-growing global gemstone market, where demand for qualified experts continues to rise. This demand is particularly significant in light of the limited number of Bahraini professionals in the field and the increasing need to develop local expertise. As a result, programme graduates are well-equipped to pursue rewarding careers across both the local and international jewelry industries. The programme is part of DANAT's broader initiative to offer globally certified educational opportunities in gemmological sciences. Participants will also have access to the use of internationally respected professional titles, including FGA, which denotes completion of the Gemmology Diploma. The Gem-A Gemmology Foundation Programme is designed to support individuals aspiring to build or advance a career in the gemstone and jewellery sectors. It provides a rigorous introduction to the field and is particularly valuable for those looking to establish a strong foundational skillset. With over 110 years of expertise embedded in its curriculum, the programme is delivered by a team of experienced and certified instructors. The programme spans 16 weeks, with instruction held one day per week over a four-month period. Participants will engage in over 300 hours of integrated theoretical and practical training, delivered within a cutting-edge educational setting designed to foster personalised learning and skill development. Commenting on the launch, Mrs. Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, highlighted the programme's transformative potential: "This internationally accredited programme presents a valuable opportunity for individuals aspiring to build a sustainable and impactful career in the gemstone sector, whether in the fields of research, academia, laboratory analysis, or the commercial jewellery industry. By enrolling in these programmes, participants gain access to cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on expertise that empower them to launch entrepreneurial initiatives, strengthen their investment acumen in gemstones, and explore a broad spectrum of roles across the entire jewellery industry." Mrs. Jamsheer further affirmed her confidence in the role these programmes will play in addressing regional talent gaps, and emphasised their alignment with Bahrain's Vision 2030, particularly in nurturing human capital in specialised strategic fields. By cultivating a new generation of highly qualified gemmological professionals, DANAT reinforces its dedication to advancing Bahrain's status as a global hub for gemstones and jewellery expertise and ensuring long-term industry development in line with international standards. -Ends- About DANAT: Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT) was established in 2017, under the aegis of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Its vision is to become the world's preferred institute for natural pearls and gemstones' third-party verification services and scientific research. UAE leads GCC project market in Q2 despite dip, outlook remains bright for 2025

The GCC project market is expected to gain renewed momentum in the second half of 2025, led by sustained activities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. According to the latest data from MEED Projects and Kamco Invest, the UAE emerged as the region's top project market in the second quarter of the year, overtaking Saudi Arabia, despite a year-on-year drop in awarded contracts. The UAE recorded $14 billion worth of contract awards in Q2-2025, down from $26.4 billion in the same period last year — a 47 per cent decline. However, its share of the GCC project market rose to 49.2 per cent from 38.9 per cent in Q2-2024, highlighting the resilience and attractiveness of the UAE's diversified project portfolio. 'The UAE's ability to retain its lead in the region despite a sector-wide slowdown reflects its strategic investment push, policy reforms, and continued focus on economic diversification,' said Mohamed Ali Omar, associate at Kamco Invest. In contrast, Saudi Arabia posted a sharp 72.5 per cent year-on-year drop in Q2 contract awards, reaching $9.8 billion compared to $35.6 billion in Q2-2024. Overall, the GCC recorded a steep 58 per cent drop in Q2 contract awards, with total awards falling to $28.4 billion from $67.7 billion a year earlier — the lowest quarterly figure in 14 quarters. The decline was broad-based, with five of six GCC nations posting lower project awards in the second quarter. The slowdown comes after two years of record spending on mega oil and gas developments and over $1 trillion in gigaprojects. According to Junaid Ansari, head of Investment Strategy and Research at Kamco Invest, 'The slowdown is a cyclical correction after an extended period of robust activity. We expect a revival in the second half as several high-value projects enter the execution phase.' In terms of first-half 2025 performance, UAE contracts totalled $44.4 billion, down 12.1 per cent from $50.6 billion in H1-2024. The largest hit was in the construction sector, which saw a 61.6 per cent drop to $4.9 billion. Yet, the gas sector proved to be a bright spot, with $5.3 billion in awards, accounting for 37.6 per cent of the UAE's Q2 total. Among the standout deals was a $400 million three-year LNG supply agreement between Adnoc Gas and Germany's SEFE. Separately, Adnoc Gas announced a $5 billion investment in its Rich Gas Development Scheme, with the first $2.8 billion tranche awarded to UK-based Wood for the Habshan facility. Petrofac and Kent were also awarded major packages for Das Island and Asab-Bu Hasa facilities, respectively. The industrial and chemical sectors in the UAE also showed signs of growth. The industrial sector saw a 35.8 per cent year-on-year rise in Q2 awards, while the chemical sector rebounded with $150 million in new contracts after no awards in the year-ago quarter. Looking ahead, Saudi Arabia's pipeline includes mega projects such as the $80 billion CARE nuclear power reactor and a $10 billion battery energy storage system. These projects are currently in the bidding or FEED (front-end engineering design) stages and are expected to boost contract activity later in the year. As of mid-2025, the GCC's pre-execution pipeline of contracts is valued at approximately $1.73 trillion. Of this, Saudi Arabia accounts for over 50 per cent at $873.2 billion, followed by the UAE at $417.9 billion, or 24.2 per cent. Kuwait ranks fourth with $114.8 billion, or 6.6 per cent of the regional total. Segment-wise, the pipeline includes $586 billion in the design stage, $625.5 billion in the study phase, $133.9 billion in pre-qualification, $106.3 billion in bidding, $162.6 billion in bid evaluation, and $115.2 billion in FEED.
