Egyptian man held over suspicion of using fake passport
KOTA BARU: The state Immigration Department has arrested a 28-year-old Egyptian man for allegedly using a fake passport while conducting transactions at its complex here yesterday. Its director Mohamed Yusoff Khan Mohd Hassan said the suspect was detained after his officers discovered irregularities while checking his passport. "The suspect had applied to renew his Long-Term Social Visit Pass as a foreign spouse of a Malaysian. "Checks revealed the Egyptian passport submitted by the suspect showed he had overstayed for more than two years. "He also submitted a newly issued passport bearing the same passport number as the previous one," he said. He added the man was arrested on suspicion of presenting a falsified Egyptian passport and is currently being held at the Tanah Merah Immigration Detention Depot for further investigations. "The department calls on the public to provide information about undocumented migrants or any unlawful activities involving foreign nationals. "Stern and uncompromising action will be taken against any parties found to be harbouring, assisting or colluding in the protection of illegal immigrants," he said.

Kuching teacher loses RM240,000 in scam, turns to moneylenders in desperation
Kong in a meeting with Jong and her husband. KUCHING (July 18): A local teacher here fell victim to a scam last year, losing nearly RM240,000. Identified only as 'Jong', she resorted to borrowing from moneylenders and keeping her family in the dark, out of fear and embarrassment. 'However, the situation had spiralled out of control, and when her husband eventually discovered the matter, they worked together to repay all the money borrowed except for one loan,' said Democratic Action Party Sarawak (DAP) Sarawak assistant publicity secretary Michael Kong in a statement today. Jong had taken a RM18,000 loan from a moneylender in December last year, and was given a four-year repayment period. She paid the instalments for January and February this year, but upon her husband's insistence, she offered to settle the entire amount. 'The moneylender refused, insisting that since she had signed a four-year repayment plan, she was obligated to pay the full RM48,000, be it in one lump sum now or over the four-year tenure,' said Kong. He then arranged a meeting between the middle-aged couple and the moneylender. After much persuasion, Kong said the moneylender agreed to terminate the loan arrangement, subject to Jong settling the principal sum of RM18,000 with some added administrative charges. 'This case highlights the danger of financial scams, and the risks of borrowing from moneylenders. 'As such, I urge the public to be extremely cautious when dealing with unfamiliar financial schemes. 'If you fall victim to a scam or face financial difficulties, do not suffer in silence. 'Seek help from trusted family members, friends or legal channels, instead of turning to high-risk lending services. 'Let this be a reminder that seeking support and advice early can prevent deeper financial trouble,' said Kong. He also advised everyone to always verify financial deals, stay informed and most importantly, to never let fear or embarrassment get in the way of seeking the right help.
