Man Utd icon Darren Fletcher in talks over new role after Ruben Amorim request

Daily Mirror5 days ago
Manchester United have undergone another major reshuffle this summer with Darren Fletcher also among those set to take on a different role next season under Ruben Amorim
Manchester United icon Darren Fletcher is set to take his first steps into management by becoming the club's under-18s lead coach. The former midfielder has held various roles at Old Trafford since 2020.
Having taken the reins within the club's youth ranks, he was promoted to the first-team by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Fletcher was named as technical director in 2021 and then returned to his coaching role under Erik ten Hag.

He was then retained by Ruben Amorim as he replaced the Dutchman. But Fletcher has now seen his role changed once more. The Athletic report that he has been offered the role of the lead coach of the under-18s by director of football Jason Wilcox and outgoing director of academy Nick Cox as a replacement for Adam Lawrence.

Fletcher was given the option of staying on as a member of Amorim's staff but is expected to accept the move and launch his managerial career. Having achieved his UEFA A Licence, Fletcher would lead United's under-18 side in the FA Youth Cup.
First team star Manuel Ugarte was previously full of praise for Fletcher for helping him understand the demands of being a Man United player. Speaking earlier this season, he said: 'We all know what it means to be United, with the history we have.
'The history, the fans, the mystique. I understand this responsibility and that starts with the day-to-day, being 100 per cent focused on the football and ready to win trophies.
'United matches are always on in Uruguay so we all know the history they have. When you come here, and you are with people who are part of the history, for example, [Darren] Fletcher — they transmit what it means to be United.'
Fletcher will follow in the footsteps of a number of former teammates including Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley in cutting his managerial teeth. Fletcher's move is the latest reshuffle of the coaching team at Old Trafford. Ruud van Nistelrooy - who has recently been sacked by Leicester - Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel all left following Amorim's arrival.

The Portuguese has also made a request to United chiefs to bring in Acacio Valentim, his former Braga colleague. Set piece coach Andreas Georgson was initially retained but departed in May of this year, with a number of prominent backroom figures also leaving Old Trafford.
There have also been major alterations in the boardroom. Dan Ashworth departed in December after just five months in the role. United had long pursued him, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe spearheading the move to bring him in from Newcastle.

Gondomar townsfolk gathered yesterday sporting football shirts and carrying floral tributes as a shrine grew at a nearby sport club. Kop idol Jota, 28, died instantly when his hired acid green £210,000 Lamborghini supercar suffered a suspected tyre blowout and crashed in a fireball on the A52 highway in Zamora province, northern Spain. The brothers were killed instantly in the horror en route to the Spanish port city of Santander to catch a ferry to the UK after the Portugal star was urged not to travel by plane following lung surgery. Their distraught mother Isabel and their grandfather were also spotted at the chapel this morning. Tearful family members were seen hugging each other before walking together towards the chapel. What we know so far: The wake proper is set to start around 4pm, with Portugal's president Marcelo de Sousa among those arriving to pay respects. Crowds began gathering on Thursday night near the chapel - the Capela da Ressurreicao on the outskirts of Porto - and applauded as the brothers coffins arrived at 11.30pm. A funeral ceremony will take place next door at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar at 10am Saturday. It is unclear whether tomorrow's proceedings will be open to the public. The sad homecoming came less than 24 hours after the deaths - in keeping with Portuguese tradition to hold wakes and funerals promptly. Tributes have been flooding in since the horrific news, including from Jota's Portugal teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and current Reds boss Arne Slot. Diogo Jota's agent in tears speaking after morgue visit where bodies were taken

Agent Jorge Mendes was among those to visit the mortuary where Diogo Jota and his brother's bodies were being held on Thursday after the Liverpool star's tragic death in a car accident Diogo Jota's agent, Jorge Mendes, visited the mortuary where the late Liverpool star and his brother's bodies were being held in floods of tears. The 28-year-old forward lost his life in a tragic car accident alongside his younger sibling Andre Silva. Heartbreaking news broke on Thursday morning that Reds star Jota and his brother, 26, had passed away after a car accident in Zamora province, Spain. The Lamborghini they were travelling in suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking and veered off the road, catching fire. Both Jota and his brother were declared dead at the scene. ‌ Super agent Mendes, who counsels some of Portuguese football's biggest names, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho, had long worked with the Liverpool forward, even since he arrived in the Premier League with Wolves. ‌ Mendes spoke to reporters after his visit to the Puebla de Sanabria mortuary in Zamora, where Jota and his brother's bodies were being kept until Thursday evening. "We lost two great people. Diogo is an example as a person, husband, son, professional. I still can't believe it, it's very difficult," confessed Mendes in tears. Mendes arrived alongside Jota's mother and travelled to Spain to be with the grieving family. Jota and his brother's bodies were kept at the location until Thursday evening, when the hearses departed for the Liverpool forward's hometown of Gondomar, near Porto in Portugal. They arrived just before midnight and were met by crowds of mourning fans, many of whom applauded as the vehicles arrived almost 24 hours after the tragic crash. Jota and his brother's funerals are set to take place at 10am on Saturday morning. A vigil is due to take place at Sao Cosme Chapel before a funeral service at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. Many fellow clients of Mendes and international team-mates have paid their respects to the late Jota, including Portugal captain Ronaldo, who wrote on Instagram: "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married. ‌ "To your family, your wife and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world. I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and Andre. We will all miss you." Current Fenerbahce manager Mourinho also released a statement: "The loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva is a great tragedy and an immense injustice for someone who was so young and had so much life ahead of him. I send my deepest condolences to all their family and friends." ‌ Manchester City's Ruben Dias is another who shared the pitch with Jota for Portugal. He also relayed his heartache, saying: "I still can't believe it. You won your first Premier League, we won the Nations League together, and you got married. It doesn't make sense. "We will not forget you, as a man, as a father, as a brother, as a son and as the tireless and talented team-mate you always were on the field. May you both rest in peace."
