The summer solstice and a look at the last full moon

This is the point in the year when the Sun reaches its most northerly position in the sky, marking the astronomical start of summer for the northern half of the globe, whilst for the southern half, the day marks the astronomical start of winter.
'Midsummer' marks the 'longest day' and the 'shortest night' of the year with the maximum amount of daylight hours possible, and the fewest number of night hours.
The recent full Moon was of particular interest as it was not only one of the furthest full Moons of the year, but the lowest full Moon in 19 years, barely making its way above the horizon at the very minimum of altitudes.
This all meant that June's Strawberry Full Moon was at a point astronomers refer to as a 'lunar standstill' or 'lunistice', and if we didn't catch the event in 2025, we'd have to wait until June 2043 when it was next set to occur.
With unfavourable conditions on both Monday, June 9, and the night of the full Moon itself, Tuesday, June 10, it was left to Wednesday evening as the last chance saloon.
On the night in question, I teamed up with Pontypool-based photographer Matt Jones. The first choice of site to view the spectacle was the Brecon Beacons Visitor Centre where we'd hope to catch the Moon against the spectacular backdrop of Pen y Fan.
However, having moved position from the visitor centre to what we thought was a slightly better vantage point just along the mountain road, it became evident that the Moon was not going to sufficiently clear the mountains to be visible, so a revised plan was required.
The next attempt was at Bwlch where the Moon's yellowy glow could be seen projecting itself from behind a ridge but still too low to actually see it. Onward we pressed into Crickhowell which again failed to deliver before heading through Govilon and swinging back to climb up to the Keeper's Pond in Blaenavon.
Here, tucked in off the main road, the Moon finally availed itself and being completely unscientific, its portrayal was straight off an artist's canvas. Subtly shrouded at times by a thin layer of cloud at a lower level, it was quite mesmerising to watch.
With the light of the Moon at such a low position in the night sky and passing through the thickest layer of the Earth's atmosphere, it had taken on a distinct mellow yellow guise before gradually appearing less so, (more the familiar 'white' appearance), as it slowly climbed during the very early hours of Thursday morning.
With cloud occasionally passing in front of the Moon, the pursuit had been well worth it, with a definite sense of fulfilment. Thanks to Matt's persistence and determination, he captured this tremendous image of the Moon that night.
The International Space Station's changing orbital path means that this week it cannot be seen from our skies.

Australian singer Delta Goodrem reflects on ‘fairytale' wedding to Matthew Copley

The couple wed in June at St Paul's Cathedral in Mdina, Malta, before a ceremony at Palazzo Parisio, an 18th century house with Italianate gardens. Copley proposed to the 40-year-old singer-songwriter, known for tracks including Born To Try and Lost Without You, at Malta's Phoenicia hotel two years ago. A post shared by Delta Goodrem AM (@deltagoodrem) Goodrem's off-the-shoulder ballgown, which featured a two-and-a-half metre train, was designed by Paul Vasileff, creative director and designer of Australian formal wear label Paolo Sebastian. Speaking to Vogue Australia, Goodrem said: 'I wanted to feel like myself on the day. That was really important to me. 'The look needed to feel grounded amongst the fairytale. I did have to start to pull my hair back from it getting so hot in Malta!' Goodrem's dress featured personal elements of the couple's relationship, including the wedding date, cherubs and a heart-shaped pair of swans that was embroidered onto the dress, according to Vogue Australia. She changed into two other dresses on the day, including a high-necked design from Con Ilio, while her partner, Copley, wore head-to-toe Tom Ford with accessories from Anton Jewellery. Speaking about their engagement, Goodrem said: 'Matt proposed to me two years ago in a very romantic setting in Malta. 'We were there playing an incredible televised festival with all of our loved ones and friends on the trip. A post shared by Vogue Australia (@vogueaustralia) 'A couple of days later it was just us, going to what I thought was a lovely dinner after a day out on the water. 'Matt set up an incredibly romantic scene in the iconic gardens of The Phoenicia Hotel in Valetta, overlooking the city's majestic harbour. 'White rose petals, fairylights throughout the gardens and a string quartet at sunset — it was magical. 'So it was a full circle moment getting to bring our family and friends back to the hotel for the wedding week. 'The Phoenicia and everyone there made it feel like home again.' She added: 'Matt and I both are natural creatives. We love to create moments and we wanted everyone to have a magical time with us. 'We live incredibly busy lives and have been touring the world these past couple years. 'We had a clear vision of our very own fairytale but we couldn't have done it without a wonderful team of people bringing our dream to life.' She continued: 'Every moment was a fairytale come true. The whole day and the week spent with everyone were beyond our wildest dreams.'

Wizz Air suspends several routes from the UAE – here's why

If you're planning a summer escape from low-cost airline Wizz Air, there are some major updates you need to know before you book. The budget carrier is making big changes to its network – and several routes out of the UAE capital are being grounded. Wizz Air Abu Dhabi has officially halted ticket sales to Belgrade and Sarajevo, with final flights departing on July 19 and August 31, respectively. These are just two of a number of routes seeing cuts or suspensions as part of a wider operational shake-up. While some of these cuts are temporary, others may be permanent – and Wizz Air hasn't ruled out additional changes. The Airbus A321neo fleet, which services many of the routes, is facing maintenance challenges, particularly in hot and dusty regions like the Middle East. Other affected routes include: Varna – last flight July 14 Tirana – last flight July 20 Kutaisi – last flight July 29 Krakow – paused from July 29 to September 19 Budapest – paused until September 1 Vienna – paused until September 21 Katowice – paused until October 26 Astana & Samarkand – paused until November 1 Sofia and Cluj – already discontinued Credit: Zayed International Airport The airline, which has been the sole operator between Abu Dhabi and both Belgrade and Sarajevo, says the shake-up is partly due to ongoing engine inspection issues. Wizz Air has launched a 24-hour hotline for impacted travellers (+361 677 7530), especially those who booked through third-party sites, which may not have shared passenger contact info with the airline. If your outbound flight is still running but your return leg is cancelled, you may still qualify for a full refund. Launched in 2021, the Abu Dhabi to Belgrade and Sarajevo services were among Wizz Air's key Europe-facing routes, with the Belgrade leg alone flying over 82,000 passengers last year. So if you've got travel plans with Wizz Air this summer, double-check your itinerary – and maybe keep a Plan B on standby. A Wizz Air Abu Dhabi spokesman said: 'In the last few days, we have taken several steps to reach and inform the passengers concerned, but more than two-thirds of them did not book their tickets directly with the airline (but through an online travel agency). 'Therefore, the contact details of these passengers are not available to Wizz Air, as these online ticketing portals do not forward the contact details of the passengers to the airlines. 'If your outbound flight is operating as scheduled, but your return flight (inbound) is cancelled, you may request a full refund for your outbound flight by contacting our regular call centre.' There's an official Wizz Air 24-hour hotline for those affected by UAE flight cancellations at +3616777530 (international roaming charges apply for the Hungary-based number). Travelling soon?
