Saudi Arabia has renewed its $100 million monthly deferred oil payment facility for Pakistan for another year, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking at a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday, the PM shared details of a letter from Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, confirming the extension of the Saudi Development Fund's support.
"We are deeply grateful to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and the Saudi leadership. Saudi Arabia has always stood by Pakistan in difficult times," he stated.
The cabinet was briefed on the digitisation of government operations, with officials reporting that 98% of federal divisions had adopted the e-office system, with 100% implementation in 39 divisions.
Additionally, 21 divisions have fully adopted inter-ministerial digital communication, while 176 government institutions have also implemented the system.
PM Shehbaz directed the complete digitisation of all federal ministries by March 20 and called for improvements in digital services for overseas Pakistanis.
Moreover, the cabinet approved Pakistan's participation in a United Nations convention on protecting marine resources in international waters, which is expected to benefit local fishermen.
Additionally, it approved the appointment of Kamran Jahangir as managing director of the National Book Foundation, six nominees for the National Commission for Human Rights, whose names will be sent to the prime minister and opposition leader for final approval, and revised request for the registration of Watim Medical College Rawalpindi, as per Islamabad High Court directions.
The cabinet also endorsed the Economic Coordination Committee's decisions from its February 14 meeting, as well as those from the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases on February 17.
The cabinet approved an addendum to Pakistan's agreement with Somalia on its National Identity System. The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has been assisting Somalia with its national identification system.
The addendum includes provisions for verification services, a mobile enrolment application, an official payment gateway, and infrastructure development.
The cabinet further approved a commission of inquiry into alleged irregularities in the Pakistan Engineering Council's governing body elections following a request from the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Additionally, it approved amendments to the Inland Revenue Appellate Tribunal rules and reaffirmed previous economic and legislative decisions made earlier this month.

PM Shehbaz vows tougher stance against militancy, lauds counter-terror efforts

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday reaffirmed his government's resolve to eliminate terrorism and enforce the writ of the state, saying Pakistan had adopted a multifaceted strategy to tackle militancy and violent extremism. Chairing a high-level meeting of the steering committee on counterterrorism and state authority, referred to as the 'Harden the State' initiative, the premier said the world acknowledged Pakistan's gains in its fight against terrorism. 'Pakistan's brave forces have taken decisive action through operations like Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad. In the latest battles, the world has seen Pakistan's success,' the prime minister said, according to a statement issued by the PM Office. He credited the country's counterterrorism approach with combining ground operations, legislation, public engagement, and efforts to curb extremist ideologies. PM Shehbaz praised the coordination between federal and provincial governments and directed full implementation of the committee's recommendations to bolster security and intelligence cooperation. 'Our brave officers and soldiers who have laid down their lives for the motherland are a source of pride for the nation,' he said, adding that the war against terrorism had unified the armed forces, intelligence services, law enforcement, and the Pakistani people. The prime minister also appreciated the role played by the Counter Terrorism Departments, especially in Punjab, as well as the contributions of the Interior Ministry and the Intelligence Bureau. The prime minister said the government was actively working on a comprehensive and actionable strategy to eliminate threats posed by groups like 'Fitna-e-Hindustan' and 'Fitna-e-Khawarij' -references often used for Indian-backed proxies and violent extremist groups. He further noted that joint actions by relevant institutions had curbed smuggling, helping stabilize the economy. 'The impact of anti-smuggling efforts has been positive for the economy,' he added. Highlighting broader governance reforms, the premier said initiatives such as the digitisation of government systems and tax reforms were helping to restore investor confidence. He pointed to recent gains in the Pakistan Stock Exchange and improved global credit ratings as signs of economic recovery. On the issue of illegal Afghan migrants, PM Shehbaz said their repatriation was continuing in line with international law. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir, National Security Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Asim Malik, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, chief secretaries, police chiefs of all provinces, and other senior officials.

US-Pakistan landmark deal to enhance growing cooperation: PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif termed on Thursday the recently concluded trade deal with the United States as landmark, saying that the agreement will enhance the growing cooperation between the two countries. 'I wish to convey my profound thanks to President Trump for his leadership role in finalization of the historic US-Pakistan trade agreement, successfully concluded by our two sides in Washington, last night,' the PM wrote on his official social media X. 'This landmark deal will enhance our growing cooperation so as to expand the frontiers of our enduring partnership in days to come.' The PM's statement comes after the US president announced that his administration struck a deal with Pakistan in which Washington would work with Islamabad in developing the South Asian nation's oil reserves. 'We have just concluded a Deal with the Country of Pakistan, whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive Oil Reserves,' Trump wrote on social media. 'We are in the process of choosing the Oil Company that will lead this Partnership. Who knows, maybe they'll be selling Oil to India some day!' Pakistan faced a potential 29% tariff on exports to the United States under tariffs announced by Washington in April on countries around the world. Tariffs were subsequently suspended for 90 days so negotiations could take place.

EVs: 2 German firms keen to train technicians in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: Two German tech companies have expressed serious interest in providing technical training to Pakistani firms and developing electric vehicles (EVs)-related infrastructure in the country. The development came during a meeting on EVs chaired by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan with a special focus on EV skills training. The meeting was attended by representatives from the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), two German companies namely, Lucas Nülle and the Institute of Motor Industry (IMI) along with the officials from the Engineering Development Board (EDB). The agenda focused on the urgent need to develop skilled technicians for the growing electric vehicle industry in Pakistan. Discussions were held on the current gap in skills required for EV maintenance and services, and how to address these challenges through international collaborations and structured training programmes. Lucas Nülle and IMI expressed keen interest in partnering with NAVTTC to provide technical training in Pakistan aligned with international best practices. SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan emphasised that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif envisions the successful implementation of Pakistan's electric vehicle policy, which requires a strong foundation of skilled human resources. He added that once electric vehicles become in mainstream on Pakistani roads, there will be a substantial demand for professionals trained in EV maintenance and battery services. 'The development of a skilled workforce in this sector will create widespread employment opportunities and contribute significantly to the national economy.' The SAPM further highlighted that all training models should be designed according to international standards to ensure global competitiveness. He termed trained EV technicians as a national asset. To move forward, Haroon Akhtar Khan directed the EDB and the Ministry of Industries and Production to work in close coordination with NAVTTC and the German companies to formulate a comprehensive training and implementation proposal.
