Luuk de Jong 'open' to Rangers as mega Igamane transfer faces hijack attempt amid Shankland contract pitch

Daily Record26-06-2025
The PSV captain is considering his future after becoming a free agent at the end of last season
Veteran striker Luuk de Jong would be "open" to joining Rangers this summer amid surging speculation in the Netherlands.
The 34-year-old is out of contract with PSV Eindhoven after captaining the club to a second consecutive Dutch title having netted 18 goals and chipped in with 13 assists across the Eredivise and Champions League last season.

De Telegraaf report that boss Peter Bosz is planning to make rising talent Ricardo Pepi his first-choice striker next season sparking "hesitation" over a new deal with Rangers touted as an interested party.

It is claimed that the former Dutch international has no intention of retiring and is open to a "final foreign adventure" with PSV ready to move on to other targets.
The report emerges with Lille preparing to make their move for Hamza Igamane with Cyriel Dessers also approaching the Ibrox exit with AEK interested.
Record Sport understands that the Moroccan is keen on a deal but sources close to the Mastiffs admit a deal is 'nowhere near close' with the Light Blues pushing for £15million deal.
Should a deal drag on, Foot Mercato report that both Marseille and Lens are waiting in the wings to hijack a deal - but a deal is an "earlier stage" than a potential switch to Lille.
And while Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman is keen on a switch to the Scottish Premiership side, Rangers boss Russell Martin has been told to look closer to home to bolster his attacking options.

Hearts' are still waiting for an answer from Lawrence Shankland over their contract offer from the 29-year-old - who is now a free agent and has offers elsewhere. Former Ibrox striker Gordon Dalziel pitched the deal on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said: "If you get Igamane out the building and you get that money for him, and you have a guy like Shankland sitting there on a free and it's wages only - I think that's a no-brainer.
"He knows the league inside out, he has shown he can score goals, won Player of the Year two years ago, he is a Scotland international, you are not paying a fee for him - I think that would be a great bit of business for Rangers."

Celtic star left 'emotional' Kieran Tierney has admitted that his Celtic Park homecoming left him feeling emotional. The left-back made his second debut for Celtic in the 4-0 friendly win over Newcastle on Saturday following his return from Arsenal on a free transfer. Manager Brendan Rodgers handed Celtic fans the chance to acclaim the left-back when he brought him on for fellow summer signing Hayato Inamura 10 minutes into the second half. Tierney's introduction generated the loudest cheer of the day as fans hailed the 28-year-old's return. (Photo by Craig Foy / SNS Group) | SNS Group Describing the moment, Tierney told Celtic TV: 'Amazing. I didn't know what to expect but that was just brilliant. What a feeling. I was quite emotional actually, running on to the park like that, but amazing. It was a great day for me.' The Scotland international was quickly into his rhythm and set up the fourth goal when he crossed for Liam Scales to head home after playing a one-two with Reo Hatate. Tierney added: 'They're a great team so it just shows the quality that we have got. When we play like that we can give anyone a game. Some of the goals we scored were brilliant.' Having had to win over some fans after returning to Celtic himself last summer, Rodgers was delighted to see Tierney receive the acclaim. 'I wanted him to get a specific welcome back,' he said. 'Just to get him back here at his age where he could easily be playing at the top end of the Premier League, to get a player of that level and that desire to play for Celtic is amazing for us. 'So, it was a great moment and another connection with him and the support. And then you see when he's on there, he's playing against young Anthony Elanga, who's a brilliant signing for Newcastle. But Kieran's got pace and power. And then you see how he created the goal with just that explosive speed and the quality. So, for us, it's great to have him here and he's still finding his fitness. But it was a great moment for him.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rangers fitness issues Rangers are dealing with a number of fitness concerns ahead of their Champions League second qualifying round first leg tie against Panathinaikos at Ibrox on Tuesday. The match against the Greeks will mark the start of the Russell Martin era but the new head coach is confident that his side can overcome the fitness issues that are restricting his choices to get his tenure off to a positive start. Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers are both likely to miss Rangers' Champions League opener against Panathinaikos on Tuesday. | SNS Group 'The adrenaline, the crowd, everything else will help them through,' Martin told Rangers TV. 'I feel like we've got a good enough base to build off and to win a game of football and to prepare us for that. I'm excited about what we're going to see on the pitch. It's by no means going to be complete. We need time to really embed what we want and for the team to really look how we want it. But we need to put in a performance that looks like us and gives us a platform to build off and to win a game. And to excite the crowd and to make them feel like this is going to be a team that they can connect with.' Rangers are likely to start without strikers Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, who scored 45 goals between them last season. 'They're both a little bit behind the group in terms of fitness,' Martin said. 'Cyriel because of an injury and Hamza because of visa problems. But they're here now and they're working so hard to get back into shape. And they're both going to be ready to help us, which is going to be really important. I'm looking forward to having them fully fit and firing very soon.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Wigan and Luton midfielder Thelo Aasgaard is also a fitness doubt for the first leg. 'It's disappointing for him and for us,' Martin said. 'Everything we thought we were getting and more since he's been here has been incredible. His understanding, his athleticism, the power he has, the technical capability, he really is an exciting player for us. Unfortunately, it's a different level of intensity and it's obviously high demands from pre-season. He's picked up just a little something, so he's going to be touch and go. We hope he can be involved, but if not, then we're really hopeful he'll be ready and raring to go for the second one.' Winger Djeidi Gassama is also short of full fitness after arriving from Sheffield Wednesday last week. Martin said: 'He's a little bit behind in terms of fitness because they went back a bit later than us and the pre-season he's had has been a bit disrupted because he was going to be on the move. He's not ready to start the game. But he is totally different to anything we've got. He's unpredictable. He's a fantastic one-on-one specialist. He has real individual talent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'He has a lot of work to do physically and to get used to the way we're going to work. But already his willingness to do that, how hard he's working to catch up on fitness, has been really brilliant. So he'll be in the squad. He'll definitely be ready to go for the second game. The first game might have to manage his minutes and the expectation, but he's going to help us a lot.' Steven Pressley is under pressure after losing to lower league opposition twice in his opening two matches in charge of Dundee. | SNS Group Steven Pressley pressure Steven Pressley is already a man under pressure after starting his tenure as Dundee manager with back-to-back defeats to lower league opposition in the Premier Sports Cup. Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Alloa followed the same scoreline at home to Airdrie and left Dundee with no chance of Premier Sports Cup progress. Games against Bonnyrigg Rose and Montrose in the coming week are now effectively pre-season fixtures for Dundee with Pressley already under pressure from fans to get things right ahead of the William Hill Premiership opener against Hibernian on August 3. Asked how they respond, Pressley told Dee TV: 'By accepting, by understanding that's not good enough, and as a group, me, the players, have to show resilience and respond to that. It's far from the ideal start, it's not what we wanted, but you have to show character in these moments of time and that's certainly what I expect us to do. They are a very good group. I have said we need reinforcements but that's irrelevant because we have to do better than that.

Eddie Howe can't hide disappointment at Newcastle exit as he confirms transfer frustration

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has spoken about the situation at the club during the summer transfer window, openly lamenting the lack of signings they have managed so far Eddie Howe has admitted that he was disappointed by the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell and it has impacted Newcastle's transfer plans this summer. The Magpies have completed just one major signing in the summer transfer window so far, leaving Howe frustrated as the 2025/26 approaches. ‌ Newcastle wanted to make a major statement this summer by strengthening their side after qualifying for the Champions League again. But barring the £55million addition of Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest, they have drawn a blank so far. ‌ They saw a £70m bid rejected by Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike – a player they have tracked for a long time and previously saw another move collapse for. Ekitike is now heading for Liverpool, the club who also enquired about a £120m move for Newcastle's star striker Alexander Isak. ‌ Mitchell announced on May 27 that he would step down at the end of June, less than 12 months after joining the club. He departed without actually signing a single player, and while he often clashed with Howe, his shock exit left the manager starting a crucial summer on the back foot. 'My phone exploded,' Howe explained. 'I was enjoying my second day of my holiday and that quickly went sour. It was a complete surprise to me. And a big disappointment because we had stability, we were planning the summer ahead and then that's a big upheaval internally that we've been through before with Dan Ashworth leaving. 'It's been a busier summer in that respect than I wanted. Naturally with Paul leaving, that left a hole in terms of that role. And of course someone in that role protects the manager from a lot of things. And of course his departure left that open for me to do some things that I wouldn't have normally done. The summer certainly wasn't a relaxing one for me to switch off and see what happens.' ‌ So while Howe has ended up having a greater say on transfers, it has come at a personal cost, taking him away from his other duties. Newcastle have sold Sean Longstaff to Leeds and Lloyd Kelly to Juventus, while Callum Wilson left as a free agent. The need for new signings is obvious – especially after they were thrashed 4-0 by Celtic on Saturday – but it's been slow progress Howe added: 'My wish was for us to do our business early and we certainly tried, but it wasn't to be. ‌ 'We've had a frustrating time in terms of losing targets to other clubs. I'd be very open with that. That's happened on several occasions. You just have to accept it. In order for a transfer to really work, in my opinion, the player has to be desperate to come to your club. If we don't get that, the transfer doesn't work. 'We're seeking players that are good enough, that are desperate to come, and that can make the difference that they're in short supply for us. We're confident that we can try and get some more players in to strengthen the depth of the squad. We're certainly aware that we need to and we're trying as hard as we can to do that.'

Be Afraid Rangers, Be Very Afraid as arrogant English sent Celtic wake up call after £20m dig on the Hotline

Robbie Copeland takes your calls after Celtic hammered Newcastle in a pre-season friendly Celtic 4 Newcastle United 0. ‌ It might only have been a pre-season friendly but already it was a result that sent shockwaves through the Hotline. ‌ Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: " Newcastle and their fans came swaggering up here claiming to be Britain's richest club and saying they would put five past us. But this is the world's most successful football club and we sent them back home whimpering playing superb football. With big signings still to come I am confident we will make the Champions League again." ‌ Sean McGarvey, Cumbernauld, said: "I wonder how many arrogant English fans will be calling it a farmers league when Celtic completely dominated one of their Champions League representatives a master class and we aren't even full strength. Be afraid Rangers, be very afraid." Some Celtic fans weren't happy at being charged £25 for a friendly but Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: "I reluctantly attended the game despite many Celtic fans boycotting the match and I was amazed as Celtic swatted aside a Champions League side with such ease. Okay it was only a friendly but it wasn't that long ago that West Ham thrashed Celtic in a similar pre season match. "This result will be a wake up call for the English media who consider our league as a Mickey Mouse one and the only downside is Brendan Rodgers still undecided on a new contract won't have went unnoticed down south." ‌ Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, offered some caution as he said: "Well done to Celtic on some big pre season wins but it's far too early to judge. Celtic's pre season went quite well but how will they handle a two legged European tie? "Celtic's two legged tie record in Europe is probably only slightly better than the European minnows. Let's hope for Scottish football's coefficient that can change. It can't always be Rangers ruling the roost for Scotland in Europe, can it?" Switching gears a little, Liam Birney, Paisley, said: "Rangers fans are a confused bunch. On Saturday's Hotline you had two comments right next to each other. ‌ "Alec Morrison said Celtic overspent £20m on Idah and Arne Engels compared to some of their players although they both won a double. "You then had Alan Flett saying Celtic shop in the bargain basement and if they had the money Celtic had we would never get near them. Newsflash Alan: with 28 major trophies to three since 2012, you are literally nowhere near Celtic!" Gary Stevenson, Newtonhill, said: "What a brass neck the Celtic regulars on the Hotline have for criticising Rangers for buying players from the English Championship. They bought Adam Idah from Norwich when he couldn't even break into their first team and Matt O'Riley from Milton Keynes Dons, whoever they are." And finally, Rangers are back in competitive action this week with Panathinaikos coming to town for the first leg of their Champions League qualifier. Robert Livingstone said: "With a roaring crowd behind them Rangers can win it and score goals with Martin's push up from the back line style of play. The Greeks' defence might struggle. If he wants away, Igamane can score, it would likely cement his transfer. Gers want to be taking least a two goals lead to Athens, gives them every chance."
