In 2022, an NFL investigation into tampering charges found that Beal had deliberate 'impermissible communications' with Brady as early as August 2019, around the time Brady signed a revised contract with the Patriots.

The league found that Beal had 'numerous and detailed' discussions with Brady about joining the Dolphins after the 2019 season. It was also determined that Beal and Brady spoke in 2021, while Brady was under contract with the Buccaneers, with discussions centered on Brady joining the Dolphins as an executive, and possibly even playing quarterback.
Beal, president of the real estate developer Related Companies, and Brady are longtime friends who have attended the Kentucky Derby together. It's unclear whether Beal believed their conversations crossed a line, but the NFL left no doubt in its findings.
The league came down hard on the Dolphins for its tampering violations, which also included contact with then-Saints coach Sean Payton. Owner Stephen Ross was fined $1.5 million and suspended for three months, and Beal was fined $500,000. The team was also stripped of its 2023 first-round draft pick and 2024 third-round choice. Brady faced no disciplinary measures.
Nevertheless, it appears from Brady's Instagram post that his friendship with Beal has endured, and that he is eager to see Beal now help lead his hometown team that Brady has also supported over the years, most famously when he was part of the 2016 delegation that tried to recruit Kevin Durant to sign with the Celtics.

Beal's Boston connections, meanwhile, run deep. In a statement to the Globe after news of the sale broke on Thursday, the longtime Celtics fan and Harvard graduate recalled attending Game 7 of the NBA Finals at Boston Garden after a business associate of his father's, the prominent Boston real estate developer Bruce Beal Sr., gave the family tickets to the Celtics' win over the Lakers. Larry Bird was named Finals MVP that day.
'It was the best day ever,' Beal Jr. said.
In 1986, Celtics owners Don Gaston, Paul Dupree Jr. and Alan Cohen put 40 percent of the team up for sale as limited partnership shares to the general public. Shares were initially listed on the New York Stock Exchange that December, priced at $18.50.
'I proudly used the money I made from summer landscaping to buy about 20 shares,' Beal Jr. said. 'It was the first stock purchase I ever made.
'Fast forward to today, it's come full circle: I'm a Dad to three diehard Celtics fans. With our eldest son in school in Boston, and the time I spend at Related Beal, where we have invested and built so much around the Garden and throughout Boston, it still feels like home.'

NFL Hall of Fame Game: Trey Lance leads Chargers to win over Lions in strong showing
The NFL preseason kicked off a little early, as the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions faced off in the Hall of Fame Game on Thursday. The Chargers picked up an easy 34-7 win behind a stellar performance from backup quarterback Trey Lance. Lance, a former third overall pick who has spent most of his career as an unlikely backup, more than proved himself as a play-caller in Thursday's win. The 25-year-old quarterback played the first three quarters of the game, going 13-of-20 for two touchdowns and 120 yards. The game began with a tribute to the four members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2025: tight end Antonio Gates, defensive end Jared Allen, cornerback Eric Allen, and receiver Sterling Sharpe. Gates, as a player who spent his entire career with the Chargers, received the biggest cheer from the crowd. After that, the stadium held a moment of silence for this week's attack on the NFL's headquarters in New York. Four people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed in the shooting. Then, it went to the game, where Los Angeles got off to a scorching start. The very first play was a Chargers kickoff-turned-Lions fumble, giving Los Angeles a huge early chance. Though Detroit's defense forced a fourth down, Lance connected with Will Dissly to give the team a 7-0 lead. Chargers cornerback Nikko Reed, an undrafted rookie out of Oregon, also showed his talents early on with an interception on Detroit quarterback Kyle Allen in the first quarter. Reed ran the ball for 60 yards, getting L.A. into the red zone for Kimani Vidal to run in for the team's second touchdown. Allen was picked off again, by Tony Jefferson, before the end of the first quarter. The eighth-year backup ended 9-of 14 for 91 yards in the loss. Detroit finally broke through in the second quarter, with a drive that ended with running back Craig Reynolds barreling his way into the end zone. But Lance was able to throw another touchdown, this time to rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith, before the end of the half. After halftime, L.A. kept things going on offense, with head coach Jim Harbaugh opting to keep the red-hot Lance in for a bit longer. Chargers kicker Cameron Dicker, who missed his first field goal attempt, made his second and third to give L.A a 27-7 lead in the third quarter. Lions rookie Hendon Hooker replaced Allen in the second half of the game, going three-of-six for 18 yards. Rookie DJ Uiagalelei eventually stepped in for Lance in the fourth quarter, and threw two-of-three for 25 yards. With the fourth quarter underway, Vidal ran in for another touchdown to bring the Chargers' score to 34-7. And then Los Angeles rookie cornerback Myles Purchase had a great interception, picking off Hooker to force the Lions' fifth turnover and finish off the game. This story will be updated.

Chargers QB Trey Lance leads list of Hall of Fame Game's winners and losers
NFL football is back. Sort of. Sort of NFL football. Regardless, the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame Game was the first time any of the league's teams had met between the lines since Super Bowl 59 – and, sadly, Thursday night's contest was somehow exponentially less suspenseful than the Philadelphia Eagles' one-night dismantling of the Kansas City Chiefs' dynasty in February. The Los Angeles Chargers' 34-7 shellacking of the Detroit Lions in Canton, Ohio, didn't feature many players likely to contribute much to those teams this season. But hey, let's celebrate the sorta kinda return of NFL football anyway with a few of the winners and losers now that the league's preseason is officially underway: WINNERS Trey Lance The high point of his NFL career was being the No. 3 overall pick of the 2021 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Since then, Lance has been held back by injury, inexperience and lack of opportunity – Brock Purdy taking advantage of his absence with the Niners before Lance sat behind Dak Prescott for two years with the Dallas Cowboys. Balling out in a preseason game won't erase years of frustration for Lance, but he flashed the talent commensurate with a man taken so high in the draft – ripping the ball downfield, making good decisions and showing off his mobility. And, yes, he was playing against fellow backups, but the poise, confidence and joy was unmistakable as Lance finished 13-for-20 for 120 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Thursday's performance won't necessarily vault him past Taylor Heinicke to be Justin Herbert's primary backup for the Bolts. But Lance is playing for a coach, Jim Harbaugh, who's a former quarterback with a reputation for maximizing his passers. It was just 13 years ago that Harbaugh rolled with little-known dual-threat QB Colin Kaepernick over former No. 1 pick Alex Smith, a decision that propelled the 49ers all the way to Super Bowl 47. Just sayin'. Nikko Reed The undrafted Chargers rookie corner carried his training camp momentum over into his professional debut, picking off a pass and returning it 60 yards to set up LA's second first-quarter touchdown. And make no mistake, there are jobs and reps to be won in this secondary. Pro Football Hall of Fame Earlier on Thursday, the HOF announced that KeyBank will sponsor a new event center, its construction scheduled to begin later this fall. The Hall hopes the venue, which will have nearly 20,000 square feet of space, will be open in time for the induction of the 2027 class of Hall of Famers. Heat and rain weather have been known to regularly disrupt enshrinement ceremonies – and the Hall of Fame Game, too – in recent years. Pro Football Hall of Fame … Game A game that's been plagued and even canceled by inclement weather, poor field conditions, COVID-19 and even the 2011 lockout in recent years was played without a hitch. For a change. Nyheim Miller-Hines He last played in the NFL in 2022, suffering a torn ACL during a jet ski accident in the summer of 2023. Now trying to make the Chargers' roster, Miller-Hines' versatility fueled a positive first step Thursday. He had 79 all-purpose yards on 11 touches, getting eight carries and catching a pass while returning one punt and one kickoff. Grant Stuard A fifth-year reserve linebacker for the Lions, he was a bright spot for Detroit's defense, making four tackles − including a sack and another for a loss. With Malcolm Rodriguez still recovering from a torn ACL, Stuard could create an opportunity to get on the field this season when Detroit loads the box. LOSERS Grant Stuard Lions coach Dan Campbell allowed Stuard to return the night's opening kickoff, which he advanced 26 yards … before fumbling. The Chargers were in the end zone five plays later. There's a reason linebackers don't return kickoffs, Coach ... though, to Stuard's credit he brought the next one back 36 yards. Jared Goff's backups Neither Kyle Allen, who started behind center for Detroit, nor Hendon Hooker distinguished themselves while trying to earn the nod to back up Goff, the Lions' QB1, this year. Heading into his seventh season, Allen's experience should serve him well. And yet he served up a pair of bad interceptions instead − and both were poor decisions, not the functions of playing with bottom-of-the-roster players. And Hooker, a third-round pick two years ago who effectively took a medical redshirt as a rookie, still needs to show he's ready for a bigger role. He was also picked off, though his INT can be fairly attributed to rookie WR Dominic Lovett, who had the ball taken away from him downfield. Detroit Lions The HOF Game typically pits two teams sending at least one former star into the Hall, and longtime Bolts TE Antonio Gates will be enshrined Saturday as will San Diego native Eric Allen. But not only did no Lions go in this year, two players who victimized them for years – former Green Bay Packers WR Sterling Sharpe and former Minnesota Vikings DE Jared Allen – will be honored. Hall of Fame Game takeaways: Trey Lance stands out in Chargers' win over Lions
Sure, the Hall of Fame Game is little more than a glorified joint scrimmage, but the Chargers had reasons to feel good Thursday night about their performance in a 34-7 victory over the NFC darling Detroit Lions. Keep in mind, this wasn't a quarterback showcase featuring stars Justin Herbert and Jared Goff. It was Trey Lance versus Kyle Allen, a duel more befitting the announced crowd of 18,144 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. This take-the-wrapper-off game gives coaches a first look at their young players and allows bottom-of-the-roster hopefuls an opportunity to catch a football, or catch an eye — either by their current team or perhaps a next one. Here are five observations from the Chargers' preseason opener: Trey Lance in the spotlight Lance, the onetime third overall pick of San Francisco, looked sharp and polished. Whether that's enough for him to get the upper hand on Taylor Heinicke for the Chargers' backup job remains to be seen, but Lance didn't hurt his chances. He completed 13 of 20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. The disclaimer here bears repeating: The preseason is not the regular season, either in speed or talent of the players on the field. A guy can look like an All-Pro in these games and not even make the final roster. In fact, that happens all the time. Read more: Latest Jim Harbaugh experiment could have a major impact on Justin Herbert's season Two of Lance's more memorable passes were to fifth-round pick KeAndre Lambert-Smith, who had a 28-yard reception on third down and a 15-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter. There's plenty of opportunity for a young receiver to step up for the Chargers, and Lambert-Smith is doing that so far. First-round pick Omarion Hampton got two carries early in the game, one of them for an eight-yard gain. On the other, though, he tried to bounce outside in the red zone and couldn't elude cornerback Rock Ya-Sin, who took him out with an ankle tackle. Although Lance played most of the game for the Chargers, DJ Uiagalelei, the five-star quarterback who played at St. John Bosco, got some snaps as well. Read more: Canton memories: The Harbaugh family's connection to Ohio's 'Cradle of Coaches' Reed and react Chargers rookie cornerback Nikko Reed made a beautiful play in the first quarter, jumping an out-route by Detroit receiver Tom Kennedy and picking off an Allen pass. Reed, an undrafted free agent who played at Colorado and Oregon, then tore off a 46-yard return down the sideline. A week earlier, Reed had a pick-six in practice, and has made positive plays in virtually every session. 'I would say [consistency] is probably the most impressive,' Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter told reporters earlier in the week in reference to Reed. 'The old adage is, 'Make a play a day and people will start to know who you are.' 'Especially if you're undrafted, it's like how do you get people in the building, organization to really remember who that guy is? You make a play every day.' Read more: How Antonio Gates amazingly made the Hall of Fame without playing college football Getting a jump It looked at times as if the right side of the Chargers line was firing off early, although that wasn't necessarily reflected in the penalty count. That was an area in which the team excelled last season. After some early issues, the Chargers were disciplined and didn't commit a lot of pre-snap penalties. The 2024 Chargers averaged 0.89 false starts per game, tying them for fourth-fewest in the NFL. Zion Johnson, a guard who has been rotating in at center, had some problems with his snaps early in the game. The interior of the Chargers' offensive line is an unresolved issue that opponents will once again exploit if the leaks don't get patched. Chain reaction Chain gangs will still have a role in NFL games, but virtual measurements are gradually being embraced. The league officially unveiled its virtual-measurement system, which will be used in the regular season for the first time and is aimed at reducing delays and improving consistency on first-down rulings. It was in place last year but only as a test. Chain gangs will still be in place for backup measurements, if necessary. While officials will still spot the ball and determine forward progress, the virtual system relies on six 8K Sony Hawk-Eye cameras to track the precise position of the football relative to the line to gain. The NFL's football operations department said the average line-to-gain measurement takes 75 seconds with human officials, whereas the Hawk-Eye system can do it in 30 seconds. Across the league, officials made an average of 12 such measurements a week. One for the ages The Hall of Fame Game is merely a prelude to the main event of the weekend, Saturday's induction of the 2025 class. Among those players is Chargers great Antonio Gates, the only Hall of Fame player to never play a snap of college football. He was a basketball star just up the road at Kent State, and wound up becoming the NFL's all-time touchdown leader for tight ends. That feat, to go from no college ball to the pinnacle of the game, is stunning to so many, including fellow 2025 inductee Sterling Sharpe. 'Like everything in life, the way we were taught is that you have to learn to follow before you can lead,' Sharpe said. 'You've got to learn to go through the step of disappointment of, not being a running back but being a safety, not being a quarterback but being a receiver… 'For him to go from basketball into football at that level and end up in the Hall of Fame?
