Djokovic storms into quarterfinals after shaky start
The 24-time Grand Slam champion looked out of sorts in the opening set but battled back with trademark resilience to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping three-hour and 18-minute contest on Centre Court.
With the victory, Djokovic set up a quarterfinal clash with Italian Flavio Cobolli, who earlier edged Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
The 38-year-old Serbian, who hasn't lifted a Grand Slam trophy since his dominant 2023 season, fell behind 4-1 in the fourth set and faced break point that could have forced a decider. But he rallied in clinical fashion, turning the tide to seal the match and silence any doubts about his fitness or form.
Djokovic was watched from the Royal Box by his former rival Roger Federer, prompting a heartfelt on-court tribute:
"I wish I had the serve and volley and the touch of the gentleman standing right there. It's probably the first time he's watched me and I've won the match."
After a sluggish start filled with unforced errors, 16 in the first set alone, Djokovic settled into rhythm, breaking De Minaur early in the second set and engaging in several high-quality rallies, including a 34-shot exchange he won to reclaim momentum.
The match saw both players trade breaks, with De Minaur's trademark speed and low-slicing shots challenging Djokovic's timing. But the Serbian ultimately raised his level, especially in critical moments, using his baseline control and volleying touch to edge ahead.
De Minaur, who missed last year's Wimbledon clash with Djokovic due to injury, had started strongly with two early breaks. But as the match progressed, Djokovic's precision and experience proved decisive.
With this win, Djokovic continues to assert his presence against the emerging generation, including Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, both aiming to usher in a new era in men's tennis.
He now turns his attention to Cobolli in the quarterfinals, as his pursuit of an eighth Wimbledon title, and 25th Grand Slam overall, gathers steam.

Roger Federer shell-shocked, rises from his seat as Grigor Dimitrov writhes in agony in tearful Wimbledon moment
Roger Federer returned to Wimbledon on Monday with his customary visit to the Centre Court for the third straight year since his retirement in 2022. He was present with his wife Mirka in the Royal Box as the couple watched Novak Djokovic beat Alex de Minaur to reach the men's singles quarterfinals, before Mirra Andreeva defeated Emma Navarro. However, in the final match of the day, he was left visibly shell-shocked when Grigor Dimitrov collapsed with an injury, before retiring from the round of 16 clash against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Grigor Dimitrov retired with an injury during Wimbledon round of 16 match The Bulgarian looked set for a first-quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon in 11 years, having breached the mark the only time in his career in 2014. He won the opening two sets against Sinner, and was locked on serve at 2-2 in the third when he showed a sign of discomfort when serving in the fifth game. He shrugged it off and delivered an ace, but fell on the ground immediately, clutching his chest and shouting, "My pec! My pec!" As the medical staff examined Dimitrov, who was helped to the bench, Federer got up from his chair and was shocked. "There is a real look of concern and empathy," said the commentator on the Swiss legend as his petrified look went viral on social media. Dimitrov left the court for further medical attention, but returned in two minutes to concede the match, leaving him inconsolable. He could barely wave to acknowledge the crowd's warm ovation as he bowed out of the tournament. The injury-prone Dimitrov has now been forced to retire in each of his past five Grand Slam appearances. Sinner, who survived a scare, said: "Honestly I don't know what to say. He is an incredible player, I think we all saw this today. He's been so unlucky in the past couple of years. An incredible player, a good friend of mine also. We understand each other very well off the court too. Seeing him in this position, honestly, if there would be a chance that he could play the next round, he would deserve it." Sinner, who had been in regal form in the opening week in London, dropping just 17 games, will next face American 10th seed Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals. The latter beat Italy's Lorenzo Sonego in four sets earlier on Monday.

'Why is there a need to play at 11?' – Marin Cilic questions Wimbledon schedule
Marin Cilic has voiced frustration with Wimbledon's scheduling after his fourth-round defeat to Flavio Cobolli began at 11 a.m. local time on Monday — earlier than any of the other singles matches that day. The 36-year-old, who went down 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), felt the conditions on No. 2 Court were substandard after overnight rain left the grass soft and unpredictable. 'It was really difficult to play on,' he said. 'You just push the ball in the middle of the court, and the ball just stays super low. It was just a struggle.' Making matters worse, Cilic had to warm up indoors as Wimbledon's practice courts don't open until 9:30 a.m. 'I don't like to speak about the conditions. OK, I lost and everything. I have to accept it,' he said. 'But I feel bitter because why is there a need to play at 11?' His match was the only one of eight singles contests on Monday to start that early. Play on Centre Court and No. 1 Court typically begins at least two hours later. Despite the narrow four-set loss, Cilic — who returned to the circuit this year after two knee surgeries — was upbeat. 'I found great form, played some fantastic tennis. Even today was quite close,' said the 2017 Wimbledon runner-up. 'I have great encouragement, happiness, positive attitude, and positive outcomes out of the tournament.'
