'You need to get it before you need it': Julie Chen Moonves on the plastic surgery tip she got at 27 — and how she's learned to embrace aging

"You don't want to look different. You want to look rested." It feels like Julie Chen Moonves has always been on our screens, starting out as a news anchor before helming CBS series like The Talk and Big Brother, the latter of which made its debut 25 years ago. As a woman in TV, that high profile has meant being targeted by critics. As we chat for Yahoo's Unapologetically series, Chen Moonves tells me that she has "developed a thicker skin" over the years, but that wasn't always the case. 'With Season 1 of Big Brother — even before digital social media, where everyone could be your critic — I dealt with critics,' Chen Moonves says. 'That cut deep, but it was a scar that healed, and that battle scar — I feel like I grew from it. It made me stronger. It made me work harder to prove them wrong. So I'm proud of those battle scars.' And she's still here, currently hosting the just-launched 27th season of Big Brother. Chen Moonves was just 30 when the reality TV series first premiered; she's now 55, and credits aging and her career longevity with helping her find "wisdom and security." 'By the time you're in your 50s, you know who you are, and you don't care so much about what other people think,' she notes. 'So the wisdom that has come with aging, I love that. The security, the sense of not being insecure anymore. Because, guess what: [Critics] were never thinking about you to begin with; they're worrying about themselves.' What else has Chen Moonves learned? Here's how a makeup artist's facelift tip helped her make peace with aging — and why she's happier in sweats than the glam outfits she wears on television. You mentioned that aging has allowed you to let go of what other people think. Was there a particular turning point that empowered you to do that? When I turned 40, a few things happened at the same time: Three months earlier, I had just had a child. So when your focus shifts to another human being and their well-being, it takes it off of you. Turning 40, you start thinking, Am I going to lose my vibrancy and what makes me feel attractive or look attractive? Am I going to be viewed as someone who is still youthful? And I began to [take] better care of myself. In your 20s, you take things for granted, and in your 40s, you have to work more at it. I have to move it or I'm going to lose it. So I'd say when I became a mom and turned 40, things started to shift to having a better, healthier approach. What's your general approach to aging these days? My general approach is avoiding the sun, eating right, movement every day, even if it's just a walk. It's not just being rigid with diet and exercise. You have to have a balance and have friends and love and relationships in your life. [I'm also] not depriving myself of things that are a guilty pleasure, like a whole sleeve of Pringles. How has your approach to beauty shifted over time? My general approach to beauty has completely shifted from when I was in my 20s. It was all about, like, I need a full face of makeup to go out to feel good about myself. As I've gotten older, it's more about — first of all, when you put on makeup and powder, it falls into the little cracks, and it ages you. Now I'm more about good, clean, natural skin with no makeup on and just a little nice lipstick. I have a very pretty, powerful, deep magenta color that I'll wear year-round; it's not just for winter. And glowy skin. Taking care of your skin is the most important aspect. And [when] you feel beautiful, you look beautiful. Given your beauty philosophy evolving, I'm curious how you feel when looking back at old episodes of? What do you find yourself focusing on when you see yourself? I feel very positive about it, and it's funny, because as you do get older, and you look back, [you think] I was so critical of myself back then. [Now] I'm like, Hey, you know, it's not so bad. It's actually pretty good. You learn how to be more forgiving. I like the archive. I like the history of it all. There might be some hairstyles or a fashion choice I made that I go, Maybe that wasn't the best. But I always look back with fondness. I know you've been open about plastic surgery. What words of wisdom would you share with anyone who's debating whether it's for them? I'd say don't get carried away, because I have been there — where you feel so transformed, and you're like, What else can I do? That's when it gets out of control. When I was 27, I worked with a makeup artist who was 47, and she told me she was getting a lower facelift. And I'm like, "You're crazy. You don't need it." She said, "You need to get it before you need it." And that stuck with me, because when she came back, I was amazed at how incredible she looked. And it wasn't obvious. She just looked fresh as a daisy. So when I got to be around 47 and started researching, that was something I wanted to do psychologically before turning 50. The two years leading up, when I would wake up in the morning, I would feel like, Oh my gosh, gravity is winning this battle, but I have a secret plan. So that was helpful — little tweaks here and there. And you don't want to look different. You want to look rested. I'm curious about that psychological piece ahead of turning 50. What did doing the work do for you mentally? The number may have been 50 on the piece of paper, but I didn't feel it, and I didn't feel like I looked like it. And I guess [the plastic surgery] did help me embrace that age. But 50, 60, even 70, I don't think is a big deal, because my mom is 92, and she doesn't have a wrinkle on her face, and she's still spry. She still travels the world. She doesn't wear makeup going out — maybe earrings and lipstick, and she looks so elegant to me. That's kind of a window into what is in my future. So I feel good. That kind of ties into another topic I'd love to explore, which is self-image and identity. How do you feel these days versus, say, your 20s? I have always been that girl who wears the sweat socks while putting on flip-flops. I was that person in sweatpants in college. I'm still that person, and that person will never go away. That's who I am at my core. For work, I look at the beautiful clothes that are [picked out] for me as a uniform. That is my professional obligation to represent and to look polished. But [when] I get home like that, makeup, the hair extensions, the false lashes, any fake hair that's attached to me, that comes off first. I'm scrubbing off the makeup, and then come out in sweatpants, elastic waistbands. I am that person who wants to live in 100% cotton with elasticity around the waist and have on sweatpants and then no heels, something flat: flip-flop with a sweatpant and hair in a bun, a big sweatshirt, and maybe, like a hoodie. Thank God after COVID, athleisure wear became everyday wear. This conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Solve the daily Crossword

‘Big Brother 27' recap: After Jimmy's outburst, was Zae, Amy, or Kelley evicted first?

Heading into the first eviction episode of Big Brother 27, Ashley Hollis had just won the Power of Veto and removed herself from the chopping block. Head of Household Vince Panaro replaced her with his closest ally, Kelley Jorgensen, believing that the "risk" of nominating her would be worth the "reward" of keeping their alliance a secret ... sure, Jan. Zae Frederich and Amy Bingham were also up for eviction, but with a BB Blockbuster comp still to take place, it was anyone's guess as to who would go home on Thursday night. Read on for our recap of Big Brother Season 27, Episode 4, which aired July 17 on CBS. This season's theme is the "Summer of Mystery" and the house has been transformed into the Hotel Mystère, where secrets lurk behind every corner. The 17 players in the running to win the $750,000 grand prize are: More from Gold Derby 'I had no idea who she was': Zae reflects on his clash with Rachel and early eviction in 'Big Brother 27' exit interview 'Big Brother 27' spoilers: Here's who wins the Week 2 Head of Household competition Adrian Rocha (23): Carpenter from San Antonio, Texas Amy Bingham (43): Insurance agent from Stockton, Calif. Ashley Hollis (25): Attorney from Chicago Ava Pearl (24): Aura painter from Long Island, N.Y. Jimmy Heagerty (25): AI consultant from Sarasota, Fla. Katherine Woodman (23): Fine dining server from Gwinnett County, Ga. Keanu Soto (33): Dungeon Master from Miami Kelley Jorgensen (29): Web designer from Burbank, S.D. Lauren Domingue (22): Bridal consultant from Lafayette, La. Mickey Lee (35): Event curator from Jacksonville, Fla. Morgan Pope (33): Gamer from Palm Springs, Calif. Rachel Reilly (40): BB12 contestant and BB13 winner from Hoover, Ala. Rylie Jeffries (27): Professional bull rider from Luther, Okla. Vince Panaro (34): Unemployed from West Hills, Calif. Will Williams (50): College sports podcaster from Wallace, S.C. Zach Cornell (27): Marketing manager from Cartersville, Ga. Zae Frederich (23): Salesperson from Paducah, Ky. The "previously on" segment caught viewers up on Jimmy's wild outburst at the Veto meeting. After Kelley was announced as the renom, Jimmy stood up and attacked Keanu for calling him a snake. "I am gunning for you, so buckle up, buddy, because this snake has a bite," Jimmy hissed, to which Keanu cooly responded, "How long did it take for you to come up with that?" After the meeting, Keanu and Jimmy sat down to come to an understanding with each other about what was said in the days leading up to it. Jimmy told Keanu that he "has nothing against" him and denied that he was overtly gunning to get him out of the game, but of course that was a bold-faced lie. Elsewhere, and despite basically nominating herself as the replacement, Kelley was in tears ("mostly real") because she wasn't entirely sure at this point that she'd have the votes to stay this week. BURGER BOYS & DUMBBELLS Not to be atypical of any past season, a group of guys got together to create the "Burger Boys" alliance in Vince's HOH room. Vince went along with Zae, Zach, Rylie and Will's new plan because he had already decided he wanted Amy to be evicted so that meant any plan to secure Zae's safety was in his best interest. Self-nominated icon Kelley spent the week digging herself into a deeper hole with an anti-campaign for her own safety where she said everything she shouldn't say to the people she needs votes from. Her campaign included gems like reminding people that Zach won $10,000 in front of Zach, calling the workout bros "The Dumbbells" to their face, and awkwardly cheering on Keanu and Jimmy spending time together after their fight. As paranoia crept in, both Kelley and Vince began to get nervous about their decision to "do something cool" by putting her up in the first place. COMING FOR THE QUEEN With Rachel's number one ally Amy on the block, she knew she had to put in work in order to secure votes against Zae for the dual purpose of protecting Amy and striking a blow at any boys alliance. Luckily Rachel found easy support among some of the women who also had their sights set on getting out a strong player like Zae. Noticing the whispering around the house and knowing how close Rachel and Amy are, Zae figured that he'd need to counter Rachel's efforts to campaign against him, but underestimated her willingness to crash out quickly when threatened. One small comment from Zae made Rachel think that he was threatening her if/when he wins HOH, prompting her to warn him about how dangerous it is "coming for the queen" because he "might get beheaded." Zae remained unphased though, hoping that him standing up a huge threat like Rachel would show the voting houseguests that he's worth working with if they hope to go against her, too. BB BLOCKBUSTER For the first BB Blockbuster competition, Zae, Kelley, and Amy played "Ransom Note," a race to unscramble four words that formed a clue directing them to collect an item in the room. Kelley was the first to retrieve an item in the room, picking up a white and green gem tiara, and pressed her buzzer first to successfully solve the ransom note riddle and earn her safety from eviction! Once the result was announced to the house, they had mere moments to discuss in small groups how they'd be voting between Zae and Amy. Based on some casual eye rolls from Rachel while whispering with people like Adrian, it seemed like she might not have the votes she thought she did to save Amy. LIVE VOTE Prior to the vote, Amy and Zae got to give one last campaign speech to the houseguests. Amy argued that Zae is "more of a competitor physically and mentally" that they should send home and that she's an "honest to a fault" player that they should want to work with. Zae agreed that he's a competitor, but pitched that they're all there to compete. His main case was that Amy is a "second vote for Rachel" and they could "even the playing field" by taking Amy out in order to strike a blow to Rachel. The camerapeople were smart to leave the shot on Rachel during Zae's speech because she was absolutely fuming. In the Diary Room, the houseguests cast their votes: Kelley to evict Amy, Rachel to "happily" evict Zae, Zach to evict Amy, Rylie to evict Zae, Jimmy to evict Zae, Morgan to evict Zae, Adrian to evict Amy, Keanu to evict Amy, Ashley to evict Zae, Mickey to evict Zae, Will to evict Amy, Ava to evict Zae, Katherine to evict Zae, and Lauren to evict Zae. By a vote of 9 to 5, Zae was evicted from the house. ZAE'S CLOSING REMARKS In his closing conversation with Julie, Zae was surprised to find out that his final two ally Rylie actually voted to evict him. He was equally surprised to learn the unremarkable and irrelevant bit of information that Amy was in fact the accomplice. Despite the could-be-embarrassing record of being the first voted out, Zae kept it positive by finding the unique attribute of him being able to call himself 17th place in Big Brother. ‘Big Brother 27' spoilers: Rachel threatens all-out ‘war' after Keanu points out her flaws from 15 years ago

Gold Derby is serving up Big Brother 27 spoilers all summer long. Read at your own risk! There's never a peaceful day in the Big Brother house. More from Gold Derby 'MasterChef' exclusive clip: 'There's gonna be hell to pay' over undercooked, 'mooing' steaks Zae Frederich on his dramatic exit from 'Big Brother,' Jimmy's HOH win, and why he wasn't 'fanboying' over Rachel Ahead of Wednesday's episode on CBS, fans are salivating over a fresh fight between Rachel Reilly and Keanu Soto. It started out as a moment of backyard bonding, as Keanu asked the Season 12 contestant and Season 13 winner how hard it is to play now with kids at home. But things soon turned ugly as the 33-year-old Dungeon & Dragons Dragon Master from Miami struck an unintentional nerve by bringing up Rachel's game flaws from 15 years ago. "Did you watch my season?" she wondered aloud, referring to her first time in the house in the 12th season, which aired in 2010. "No, but I watched a highlight of it," Keanu replied. When she asked if he remembered her love affair with Brendon Villegas, which led to them eventually getting married and having two children, he responded, "No, not Brendon. [Ragan Fox] was on the weight bench, and you came up, and he's like, 'Oh, the only reason you're even here is because they opened up Pandora's Box and unleashed something horrible on the house.'" Rachel's demeanor immediately changed as she relived the traumatizing memory, but Keanu failed to read the room, and he kept running his mouth. "And then," he added, "I think [Hayden Moss] told you something like, 'Why don't you try stringing a sentence together without using the word 'like'?" Keanu cackled out loud as he relived her so-called "good moments" on Season 12, and Rachel, fuming with red-hot rage, said, "Yeah, it sounds like it, huh?" The self-described queen stormed over to the door and slammed it behind her, as Keanu was left wondering whether he said "something wrong." Bless your heart, Keanu. Later in the kitchen, Rachel absolutely unloaded on her fellow houseguest as he tried (but failed) to do some damage control. "[You're] trying to point out everything bad about me, to try to get under my skin," she hissed. Keanu vehemently denied all of her accusations, but she rolled her eyes and declared, "What are you trying to do, Keanu? You want to f--k with me? Game on, Keanu. I tried to stick up for you. I tried to be your friend. But you want to go to war with me? Then go to war with me." Just last week, Rachel threatened to figuratively "behead" anyone that came after her in the game, and her first victim was Zae Frederich. (Watch Gold Derby's exit interview with Zae.) Will Keanu be the next person to face Rachel's wrath? He was nominated for eviction by Head of Household Jimmy Heagerty, but was able to use his special power to bring back a former houseguest to play on his behalf in the Power of Veto competition. Gold Derby has already reported the outcome of that challenge, which will air Wednesday night.
