All Blacks name five debutants in Scott Barrett-led squad for three France Tests
New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson raised eyebrows on Monday by naming five uncapped players in his 33-man squad for the upcoming three-Test rugby series against France. Scott Barrett will captain the side, while notable omissions include Dalton Papali'i, Ethan Blackadder, and David Havili. The new faces in the squad are forwards Brodie McAlister, Ollie Norris, Fabian Holland, and Du'Plessis Kirifi, along with winger Timoci Tavatavanawai.
Robertson described the squad selection as a mix of 'continuity and opportunity', aiming to blend experience with fresh talent ahead of the Tests in Dunedin, Wellington, and Hamilton next month."Around three-quarters of the players named today were part of our squad for the 2024 northern tour, which is important because we want to continue to build on the rugby we were playing at the end of last year," he said. "We have balanced that with an exciting group of new and returning players who have performed during Super Rugby Pacific.
"For the five uncapped players this is a particularly special day," he added.
The All Blacks have also recalled hooker Samisoni Taukei'aho and centre Quinn Tupaea, marking their returns after extended absences - Taukei'aho last played in 2023, while Tupaea hasn't featured since 2022.
Scott's brother Jordie Barrett and seasoned flanker Ardie Savea named as vice-captains.

3-pacer policy, no Kuldeep Yadav: Morne Morkel explains India's Oval call
India's decision to persist with a three-pacer strategy and overlook Kuldeep Yadav throughout the England Test series has sparked conversations—both inside the dressing room and amongst fans. The tactical call, repeated over five matches, was a defining feature of India's approach in the Anderson-Tendulkar the series, India opted for a combination centred around three frontline pacers, with spin handled by Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, both all-rounders. The aim was to lengthen the batting lineup, offering more depth at the cost of a specialist spinner. But as the Tests wore on and pitches began to break up, the absence of Kuldeep Yadav, India's premier wrist-spinner, became increasingly Test, Day 4 Highlights | Full Scorecard In the press conference after Day 4 of the fifth and final Test at The Oval, bowling coach Morne Morkel explained the rationale behind the repeated selection calls.'To be honest, that's been part of our conversation before every match. Heading into the Tests, given the nature of the wickets and the overhead conditions in the early days, we felt going in with the extra batter was important,' Morkel said. 'In the last couple of games, our fourth seamer didn't bowl too many overs anyway, and with Washi and Jadeja both capable of bowling long spells, we leaned towards strengthening the batting. But yes, these are things we will reflect on at the end of the tour—the areas we could've handled differently.'Before the series, there were quiet expectations that Kuldeep Yadav would feature prominently, especially given how his left-arm wrist spin could have challenged England's attacking middle order. Yet, the team consistently leaned on part-timers and left him out even when conditions began turning favourable for the final Test at The Oval, India didn't deviate from that plan—three quicks, spin from Sundar and Jadeja, and added cushion in the batting with Karun Nair coming in. However, as England closed Day 4 needing just 35 runs with four wickets in hand, questions emerged about whether India had compromised too much on bowling the series nears its conclusion with England poised for a 3-1 victory, scrutiny around India's selection calls—especially the continued omission of Kuldeep—will only grow louder.- EndsMust Watch

Ex-ENG Star's Big Claim: 'If Rohit Or Kohli Were Playing, Series Would've Been...'
Last Updated: Ex-England cricketer claims India are missing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, affecting their ability to win key moments. Former England cricketer David Lloyd has claimed that India are missing the 'iconic' duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He believes that either of them being in the team would have helped the visitors win the 'main moments' and the series outcome would have been 'different'. Reports came in May that India were considering dropping Rohit from Test captaincy to bring in new blood and the Mumbaikar announced his retirement from the format soon after. A few days later, Kohli, too, confirmed that he was leaving Tests, though later it was learned that his decision had been made long back. 'India have been very impressive over the series, but they haven't won the main moments," Lloyd wrote in his column for The Daily Mail. 'If Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli were playing, I think the outcome would have been different. Certain players sniff out the main moments and are proactive rather than reactive. Ben Stokes is fabulous at that. India will be scratching their heads thinking how on earth they could lose this 3-1." Despite winning more sessions than England, India are 2-1 down in the series before the fifth day of the final Test, where the hosts are 35 runs away from victory with four wickets in hand. Not only is his batting spot under threat, but calls are being made to strip him of vice-captaincy and hand it to white-ball captain and Oval centurion Harry Brook. 'Michael Vaughan said he would prefer Harry Brook as vice-captain, and I agree," Lloyd wrote further. 'Brook is assured of a place in this side and looks a leader. He would naturally feed off Stokes. The simple fact is that Ollie Pope's place in this side is vulnerable. Take out the runs against Ireland and Zimbabwe and his return is very modest. His average in the fourth innings of a Test is 16.7, and for a number three, that is nowhere near enough." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
