Want to see tennis stars like Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon's Centre Court for $20? Here's how

Toronto Star7 hours ago
LONDON (AP) — It might just be the best deal in all of major professional sports: Tennis fans can get a chance to watch stars such as Carlos Alcaraz compete on Centre Court at Wimbledon by forking over just 15 pounds — about $20 at the current exchange rate.
That's instead of Friday's price of nearly $220 for the best seats at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament's biggest stadium. Face value there rises as the event goes on, hitting nearly $370 by the end of Week 2, then going up again for the singles finals.

India's leader promises trade and investment in a visit to Trinidad and Tobago

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promising continued trade and investment in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday in an address to the nation's parliament. 'It's time for us to work together to give the global south its rightful seat at the table,' Modi said. 'For us there are no limits to our cooperation with you.' The two-day trip was Modi's first official visit to the diverse, twin-island Caribbean country that shares longstanding ties with India. The visit was expected to boost investment in energy, health, security and other sectors. In his speech, Modi said that he saw 'great potential' in working with Trinidad and Tobago on everything from developing new digital artificial intelligence tools to agriculture. He said that trade between the two countries was only set to grow 'with human development at the center.' Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced a number of investments into medical, energy and technological infrastructure promised by Modi, and thanked the leader. 'This visit is more than just diplomacy. It marks a new dawn,' she said. 'India, and Trinidad and Tobago, will now work as strategic partners.' Sundays Kevin Rollason's Sunday newsletter honouring and remembering lives well-lived in Manitoba. She said that the two countries were also working on renewing bilateral trade and investment agreements, and that Trinidad and Tobago were slated to expand exports to India. In his speech, Modi also highlighted the long-standing connections between the two nations, which he said acted as a 'powerful symbol' of fraternity and trust between the two nations. More than 35% of the Caribbean country's 1.4 million inhabitants are East Indian, descendants of indentured workers brought from India during the colonial era. Modi was greeted warmly by many of the country's Hindu population, but some in Trinidad and Tobago's Muslim community sharply criticized the leader. About 18% of Trinidad and Tobago's population is Hindu, while 5% is Muslim. 'Both our nations rose from the shadows of colonial rule to write our own story,' Modi said. 'The legacy of shared heritage and mutual respect continues to guide our partnership.'

France captain Griedge Mbock ruled out of Euro 2025 opener against England

ZURICH (AP) — France will be without captain Griedge Mbock for its opening match at the Women's European Championship against defending champion England. Mbock has been struggling with a right calf injury and trained apart from her teammates on Thursday, two days before France's opener in Zurich. France coach Laurent Bonadei confirmed on Friday that the experienced Paris Sain-Germain defender has been ruled out of the match. 'Unfortunately, Griedge still feels a bit of discomfort in her calf so we won't take any risks,' he said. 'The tournament has only just started and she needs specific care. 'She will be with us tomorrow but not on the field, unfortunately for her and for us.' After England, France next plays tournament debutant Wales on Wednesday before its final match in Group D four days later, against the Netherlands. Bonadei said he was 'quite confident that she will be able to join us quickly.' The 30-year-old Mbock has made 92 appearances for France — starting 81 of those — since her debut 12 years ago. Mbock will likely be replaced in defense by Alice Sombath or Thiniba Samoura, while PSG teammate Sakina Karchaoui could be handed the captain's armband. 'Griedge is someone who is very important in the group, she is our captain,' Karchaoui said. 'But even if she won't play the match, she will still be with us, she always has good words to tell us. 'But today we also have a strong group and we can count on all the players … that's also our strength, that no one is irreplaceable.' ___ AP soccer:

Frankfurt signs Germany forward Jonathan Burkardt from Bundesliga rival Mainz

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Eintracht Frankfurt signed Germany forward Jonathan Burkardt from Bundesliga rival Mainz on Friday. The 24-year-old Burkardt signed a contract through June 2030. 'Jonny has a lot of qualities that will benefit our game. He has proven his finishing ability at Mainz, just as he has his tactical understanding. He's an absolute team player on and off the pitch,' Frankfurt sporting director Markus Krösche said. Burkardt was the top-scoring German player in the Bundesliga last season with 18 in 29 games, a club record for Mainz. Only Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy and Patrik Schick scored more. Altogether he scored 41 goals in 136 Bundesliga games after coming through Mainz's youth ranks following a switch from Darmstadt's youth setup in 2014, and he spent 11 years at the club. Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel said Burkardt will remain cherished by the club after extending his contract when he could have left for free in 2023. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. 'Mainz would have been relegated without his outstanding performances in the second half of the season 2023-24, after his long injury layoff,' Heidel said. 'We haven't forgotten that.' Burkardt's signing by Frankfurt could indicate the club might be willing to let Hugo Ekitiké go. The French forward has been linked with Premier League clubs after his fine finish to the season in the wake of Omar Marmoush's midseason departure for Manchester City. Burkardt has made three appearances for Germany since his debut last year. ___ AP soccer:
