Producer Shiladitya Bora ventures into Odia cinema with ‘Bindusagar', teaser out

The Hindu12-06-2025
Indian independent studio Platoon One Films (Ghaath, Yours Truly) is venturing into Odia cinema with a gentle family drama titled Bindusagar. Directed by Odia filmmaker Abhishek Swain, the film follows a young woman's quest to reconnect with her roots. The project taps popular names from the vibrant regional industry. It stars Prakruti Mishra, known for Hello Arsi, and Dipanwit Dashmohapatra, who starred in Daman, a record-setting Odia film that won the National Film Award in 2024.
'When a young woman's quest to discover her roots intersects with a grieving father's journey to faith, they find redemption and purpose in the ancient city of Bhubaneswar,' reads the official logline of Bindusagar. The film is shot in Odisha and London, and hopes to resonate with both the national and diaspora audiences.
Producer Shiladitya Bora of Platoon One Films says, 'Odisha's producing some fantastic content in recent times, however it's still underexposed to the audiences across the world. The Odia film industry is on the verge of breaking out, and we want to be one of the early movers when that happens.'
Filmmaker Abhishek Swan expressed excitement for this confluence. 'Platoon One's entry can be a game change for Odia cinema. With their deep understanding of local content for the global audiences and distribution bandwidth, Bindusgar may turn out to be the first truly global Odia film. We are super excited with the prospect of taking our film, culture and music to audiences worldwide,' Swain said.
Also starring Robin Das, Bindusagar will feature a 7-song album by top names in the music industry, the makers said in a communiqué.

Kanika Kapoor's Corseted Blush Look Was All About Soft, Feminine Power

At the Serpentine Party in London last month, Kanika Kapoor stunned in a blush pink ensemble. Designer Isha Jajodia of RoseRoom breaks down the look. For the prestigious invite-only Serpentine Party in London this year, Kanika Kapoor was among the few Indian celebrities. Dressed in a sculpted blush creation from Isha Jajodia's RoseRoom, Kanika brought a quiet kind of drama to the gala, one that whispered elegance while holding unmistakable presence. Titled Étreinte de Rose, which translates to Embrace of Rose, Kanika Kapoor 's ensemble married structure with softness. A delicately pleated skirt flowed effortlessly from a corseted pannier-belt bodice that cinched her waist with clean intent. The result was a silhouette rooted in romance, yet grounded in quiet power. 'The look was very much a reflection of Kanika herself," shares designer Isha Jajodia. 'We wanted something that captured her elegance, but also her strength and presence. The colour was chosen to complement her aura, soft but with impact. Structurally, we added elements like the corseted bodice to give it form and power, which mirrors how I've always seen her: graceful, but never fragile. She's someone who's believed in Roseroom since day one, and there was something very special about designing this piece for her. It felt personal." It took close to two months to bring the piece to life – a process filled with fabric trials, construction refinements, and thoughtful detailing. Subtle lacework, sheer layers, and hand embroidery added movement and texture, while the soft blush tone was chosen to complement Kanika's innate grace. Rooted in romance and restraint, Kanika's look featured a sculpted pannier-belt corset that defines the waist with quiet precision, paired with a pleated skirt in a gentle blush tone. Delicate lace, hand embroidery, and subtle layering come together to create a sense of movement and lightness. Thoughtfully detailed and unmistakably feminine, the piece speaks to a kind of elegance that doesn't need to announce itself. But perhaps what gave the look its emotional resonance was the bond between designer and muse. 'Kanika has been part of RoseRoom's journey from the beginning," says Isha. 'Designing for her always feels instinctive. I know what gives her confidence, what sits well on her both physically and spiritually. This look was simply a continuation of that understanding." view comments First Published: July 22, 2025, 19:06 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Vinsmera Jewels ad redefines fashion; Jewellery is Beautiful for Everyone

Dr Vidhu Sekhar P (Assistant Professor, Department of Fashion Management Studies, National Institute of Fashion Technology-NIFT, Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India) The recent viral advertisement of Vinsmera Jewels, owned by Kambrath Brothers from Kannur, Kerala, has remarkably shown the boldness in breaking the traditional gender norms and its creative storytelling, which has captivated attention on new media platforms for both critics and audiences across the country. In the last two days (18th July), they received 1.9 million views and 62 K likes for their YouTube advertisement. This advertisement was broadcast in connection with the upcoming opening of a new showroom in Calicut, Kerala, scheduled for next month. The concept and the storyline of the ad showcase the behind-the-scenes of a jewellery photoshoot and the discussion. The storyline goes like this: Veteran Malayalam movie actor Mohanlal arrives on the set, and the Director briefs the context and introduces the female model, who is wearing the brand's diamond jewellery. The story narration twists when the jewellery disappears after the model leaves the location. The film crew desperately searches for the missing pieces. The film director and crew decided to break the news to Mohanlal, and the suspense was unveiled when they found Mohanlal in the vanity van, facing the mirror while wearing the ornaments. It was followed by a pin drop silence and the expressive performance of Mohanlal. Lal was wearing his everyday shirt and trousers paired with the necklace, bracelet, and ring, He was seen performing a classical dance with expressive hand gestures(mudras) that infused with intentionally feminine movements, an expression of self. The ad stands out for avoiding dialogue. Mohanlal's performance depends entirely on body language, facial expressions, and dance to convey joy and embody a gender-fluid persona. The ad ends with the director catching Mohanlal in the middle of his dance. Instead of tension, both burst into laughter, keeping the tone light and celebratory. Mohanlal, a highly respected actor in India known for his versatility and traditionally masculine on-screen persona, chose to elegantly wear women's jewellery without irony, caricature, or mockery. This challenged conventional norms in jewellery advertising and notions of gender roles in Indian media. The performance is earning acclaim for being bold and impactful. Fans and critics alike note that Mohanlal 'pushes boundaries in jewellery advertising' and 'seamlessly merges masculine and feminine elements,' earning praise for the actor's artistry, poise, and willingness to explore new expressions. Social media responded swiftly, filled with admiration for Mohanlal's bold move. Comments span from 'Absolutely brilliant' to 'No other actor blends femininity and masculinity so elegantly,' showing respect even from viewers who found the scene surprising or unconventional. The ad is seen as a pivotal moment for jewellery advertising in India, sparking discussions on representation and inclusivity in the country's luxury market.
