CM Siddaramaiah to meet farmers amid land acquisition row
BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday announced that he will hold a comprehensive meeting with the protesting farmers and leaders of Samyukta Horata Vedike on July 4 at 11 am, to address their demands and concerns over the proposed land acquisition by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).
Facing growing resistance from farmers, the state government has partially rolled back the plan, exempting 495 acres identified for acquisition in three villages of Channarayapatna hobli in Devanahalli taluk to establish the Defence and Aerospace Park.
Earlier in the day, hundreds of farmers, Dalit groups, and activists from across Karnataka marched to the Chief Minister's official residence 'Kaveri', demanding an immediate halt to the acquisition of fertile agricultural land. Meeting a delegation of leaders, the CM assured that he would hold a meeting with them to resolve the issue on July 4.
The protest follows the 'Devanahalli Chalo' rally held on Wednesday, where farmers and activists opposed the government's plan. The demonstration, which began with a peaceful pledge by residents of 13 villages, escalated by evening as police detained protesters and released them later.
The farmers, who have been resisting displacement for over 1,100 days, took a collective vow in front of civil society, declaring, 'Even if we lose our lives, we will never sell this soil. No matter how much you trouble us, we will never allow this green land to be destroyed.'

Gandhian ideals to find place in Dasara tableaux: CM
Bengaluru: As this year's Vijayadashami coincides with Gandhi Jayanti, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday directed officials that tableaux prepared for the Mysuru Dasara celebrations must reflect Mahatma Gandhi's ideals. He said Gandhi's philosophy should be suitably represented alongside the government's welfare schemes and achievements. 'This year Dasara falls on Gandhi Jayanti -- on October 2. So, I have instructed officials that Dasara should be celebrated in a manner that makes Gandhi Jayanti meaningful. Especially the tableaux should reflect Gandhi's ideals,' the CM told reporters. Siddaramaiah briefed reporters after presiding over a high-level committee meeting at Vidhana Soudha on the preparations for Dasara-2025. The CM said the historical and cultural significance of the festival should not be overshadowed by sheer extravagance. He emphasised that unnecessary spending does not amount to grandeur and that public safety and convenience must be the top priority. 'This year, Dasara will begin on September 22 and culminate with the Jamboo Savari on October 2, making it an 11-day event, instead of the usual 10,' the CM said. He emphasised that the programmes should be designed to uphold the rich cultural, religious, and historical traditions of the Mysuru Dasara, which is globally renowned. He stated that while Rs 40 crore was allocated last year, adequate funds will be provided this year as well to organise a grand celebration. He asked departments to plan meaningful exhibitions and displays to showcase government initiatives and guarantee schemes in a way that connects with the public. ' He also called for people-centric policies to be effectively communicated during the festivities. With more than 10 lakh people expected to attend, including foreign tourists, the CM directed officials to give the utmost attention to crowd management and safety measures. He said police personnel must be people-friendly and law and order should be maintained without any lapses. The number of seats in front of the Mysore Palace will be reduced this time to manage crowding during the Jamboo Savari. Officials were asked to ensure that there is no overcrowding at any of the programme venues.

BJP-RSS deadlock over new party chief drags on, state leadership in limbo
The deadlock between the BJP's top leadership and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over the selection of a new national president continues to linger, months after the current chief JP Naddas extended term technically term as BJP chief ended in January 2023, but the party extended his tenure until June 2024 to steer it through the Lok Sabha elections. Party insiders told India Today TV that the leadership could have sent a clear signal by appointing a working president in June, just as it had done in 2019 when Amit Shah was still party chief and JP Nadda was named working president ahead of his formal elevation in January insiders claimed that they have already communicated their views on the matter to the party's top brass. The Sangh has laid down its criteria for the next president, insisting that the leader should be organisationally strong, without prioritising political messaging through the appointment. The RSS also wants the organisational changes to be accompanied by an overhaul within the government. A key RSS meeting, its Akhil Bharatiya Prant Pracharak Baithak, will be held in Delhi from July 4 to 6, in the presence of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale, and all six joint general secretaries. Sources indicated that the leadership of the BJP may hold discussions with RSS functionaries during this meet, potentially finalising the next party BJP leaders said the new president will likely carry out a significant reshuffle within the party. State leader Suvendu Adhikari is keen on the job, but the RSS reportedly remains sceptical due to his TMC roots. Names of women leaders like Locket Chatterjee and Agnimitra Paul are also being discussed, as the party considers a woman face to take on Mamata Banerjee's TMC in next year's Madhya Pradesh, balancing the state's complex caste matrix is proving equally challenging. With OBCs, SCs and STs constituting over 70 per cent of the population, the leadership is cautious in picking a candidate who can consolidate support and counter the leaders like Gajendra Patel, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Sumer Singh Solanki, as well as Dalit leaders like Lal Singh Arya and Pradeep Lariya, are under consideration. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is an OBC, making it less likely that an OBC will be picked for the state president's post, but the name of Kavita Patidar has emerged in Gujarat, the next state president is expected to be either a Patidar from Saurashtra or an OBC, keeping the region's caste arithmetic and 2027 assembly elections in mind. Fact-finding report released on Mangaluru mob lynching
BENGALURU: A fact-finding report on the mob-lynching of Mohammed Ashraf at Kudupu, Mangaluru, titled 'Lost Fraternity: A mob lynching in broad daylight, A betrayal of the promise of the Constitution' was released. It was done by People's Union for Civil Liberties, Karnataka, All India Lawyers Association for Justice, Karnataka, and Association for Protection of Civil Rights, Karnataka. Mavalli Shankar, State Convenor, DSS (Ambedkarvada) pointed to the larger failure on part of the state administration in ensuring impartial investigations into incidents in the oppressed communities. He also added that in such cases, it is important that officials and elected representatives make a visit, at least to the family, to inspire public trust in the rule of law which has not happened in the case of Ashraf and killing of a Dalit. Advocate Vinay Sreenivasa said how bails have been granted to the accused on technical grounds which are indicative of the laxity displayed by the police. He also called on the state administration to organise a meeting with various civil society groups on how best to uphold law and order. He expressed his concerns over the governments' action of bringing new laws to counter hate and fake news.
