
What We Are Reading Today: ‘The Trouble with Happiness'

I don't often read fiction; real-life stories are much more interesting and usually compelling enough. However, Danish author Tove Ditlevsen's work intrigued me. On a recent trip to Denmark, I picked up a copy of 'The Trouble with Happiness and Other Stories' and spiraled into her dark world — in the most enlightening way.
A collection of short stories, each with its own moody and simple sensibility that oozes authenticity, the book is small but mighty. Known for her deeply psychological and slightly melancholic writing style, Ditlevsen brings us along for the lonely, disappointing, and often fleeting moments of happiness.
The book is aptly named.
Each story delves into the inner lives of regular people. Her chosen narratives of everyday women are a powerful exploration of human vulnerability and longing for connection. The writing is witty and drenched in emotional honesty. It is quite depressing at times, as the author indeed struggled with depression during her 59 years of life, before her death in 1976.
The version I read was translated by Michael Favala Goldman. Although I was unable to read it in its original form, this translated version allowed me to get a sense of who Ditlevsen was. Many of the stories in this book were published previously, in the 1950s and 60s, albeit in slightly different iterations, in prestigious publications such as The New Yorker, Apple Valley Review and Hunger Mountain Review. But to have them contained in one book was powerful, and I had a hard time putting it down.
In 'The Cat,' Ditlevsen plainly writes about ordinary people and places but infuses the mundane with her poetic sense: 'They sat across from one another on the train, and there was nothing special about either of them.'
She continues: 'They weren't the kind of people your eyes would land on if you tired of staring at the usual scenery, which appears to rush toward the train from a distance and then stand still for a second, creating a calm picture of soft green curves and little houses and gardens, whose leaves vibrate and turn grayish in the smoke streaming back from the train, like a long billowing pennant.'
The stories are short and sharp, cutting you in a way a knife cannot.

BLAST Slam IV is heading to Singapore this November
The ES Times — BLAST has officially announced that BLAST Slam IV, the fourth edition of its Dota 2 tournament series, will be held live in Singapore this November. For the first time in the series' history, fans will be able to experience the action in person. A historic return since The International 2022 BLAST Slam IV marks the first Dota 2 tournament in Singapore since that landmark event. After three editions held behind closed doors in Copenhagen, the series is now set to make its live debut at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. From studio battles to on-field spectacle BLAST began its esports journey by organizing Counter-Strike 2 tournaments and has built a strong reputation for high-profile productions. In November 2024, the Danish organization entered the Dota 2 scene with BLAST Slam I, followed by Slam II in February 2025. Each tournament featured a $1 million prize pool and was broadcast from BLAST's Copenhagen studio. Confirmed live audience from November 7 to 9 This time, things will be different. The final three days of BLAST Slam IV will be held at the iconic Singapore Indoor Stadium, with fans welcomed from November 7 to 9. Aleksandar Hemon's 2011 essay 'The Aquarium' is an exploration of parental love, grief, and the isolating toll of confronting a child's mortality. The essay was first published in The New Yorker and later appeared in 'The Book of My Lives' in 2013. Written with unflinching honesty, the piece chronicles Hemon's experience navigating his infant daughter Isabel's diagnosis of a rare brain tumor and the family's agonizing journey through surgeries, chemotherapy, and loss. Hemon's writing grapples with displacement and identity, weaving together fiction, memoir, and history. A MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, he doesn't just tell stories; he uses language to find pockets of hope in shattered lives. Eurovision lifts ban on Palestinian flags as scrutiny of Israel's participation grows
LONDON: Organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest have lifted a ban on Palestinian flags for audience members, but maintained restrictions for participating artists, as pressure over Israel's inclusion in this year's event increased. The change, confirmed by Danish broadcaster DR, marks a shift from the European Broadcasting Union's longstanding rule prohibiting flags from non-competing countries and territories. That policy led to Palestinian flags being banned in previous years. According to updated guidelines obtained by DR, fans will now be allowed to bring and display any flag that does not contain 'racist and/or discriminatory content,' or symbols thought to incite hatred, violence, or linked to banned organizations. In a statement to CNN, the EBU said the update seeks to 'strike a balance to ensure that our audiences and artists can express their enthusiasm and identities,' while offering greater clarity for national delegations. However, the relaxed policy applies only to the audience. Participating artists will still be restricted to displaying official national flags in all official Eurovision spaces, including the stage, green room, and Eurovision Village. Artists may show only the flag of the country they represent. The revised policy comes amid growing criticism of Israel's participation in this year's contest to be held in Basel, Switzerland, with semifinals on May 13 and 15 and the final on May 17. Officials in countries including Slovenia, Spain and Iceland have questioned Israel's inclusion. Icelandic Foreign Minister Porgerour Katrin Gunnarsdottir told a local outlet she found it 'strange and actually unnatural that Israel is allowed to participate,' accusing the country of committing 'war crimes' and 'ethnic cleansing' in Gaza.
