Alex de Minaur stormed from 4-1 down in the final set to seize the DC Open in major positives ahead of the US Open
The Australian No.1, who is now ranked 8th on the ATP live rankings, recovered after dropping the first set against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, steamrolling him in the second before coming back from 4-1 down in the final set to claim a 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 win.
Playing his first event since being ousted by Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon, 26-year-old de Minaur then looked like fading in the final set against the 12th seed.
Hut he rallied, broke his opponent's serve twice, including with Davidovich Fokina serving for the match at 5-3.
Then de Minaur saved three match points while serving at 4-5 to level the final set 5-5 as the match time ticked close to three hours
Davidovich Fokina ramped up his serve to hold, getting to 6-5, then de Minaur level again 6-6 sending the electric contest to a final tie-break for the title.
The Australian was then never headed in the deciding 10 minutes, winning the opening two points of the tie-break and going on with the, winning 7-3 to take the win in just over three hours.
It was de Minaur's 19th ATP Tour final of his career, and the Australian star now has 35 wins this season, hoping to crack the 50 win mark for the first time having won either 46 or 47 matches in each of the past three seasons.

Before the tournament began, de Minaur was adamant he was at his 'peak' and big wins had to start coming.
'I've got the experience now. I've got the knowledge, the physicality side of things. Everything is just there for me to go out and perform,' De Minaur said.
'I can really have a swing these next three or four years and really show that I'm at my peak and break through some barriers.'
Those barriers will next present themselves at Flushing Meadow with a possible run in the new-look US Open doubles with de Minaur's British fiance, Katie Boulter, before his assault on singles.

Also involved in the blockbuster transfer were the Brooklyn Nets, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Los Angeles Lakers - with Australian rookies Rocco Zikarsky and Alex Toohey playing their part. Zikarsky, drafted by the Timberwolves, and Toohey - who is now a Warrior - were selected on draft night as part of picks that had been traded to facilitate of the seven-team movement. Boomers centre Jock Landale was also loosely involved, as his $8m deal was waived by Durant's new team, the Rockets. Landale has since found a new home at the Memphis Grizzlies. Rocco Zikarsky has landed in Minnesota. Picture: Getty Alex Toohey was selected by the Golden State Warriors. Picture: AP Durant, in a Sunday post on X, sent a farewell message to fans in Phoenix while making it clear he is excited to be heading for Houston, his fifth career NBA club. 'My time in Phoenix has come to an end,' Durant posted. 'All these stops along the journey have really impacted me in a positive way. Remember it's a world behind the scenes, and those who make things work in that space, work tirelessly to make our lives easier as players. 'I truly believe this nba is a one big community. Much love to Arizona. Houston, Can't Wait!' Durant, a 15-time NBA All-Star forward, turns 37 in September. The 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player won NBA titles with Golden State in 2017 and 2018. 'Kevin impacts the game on both ends of the court and is one of the most efficient scorers in the history of basketball,' Rockets general manager Rafael Stone said in a statement. 'We liked the growth our team showed last season and believe Kevin's skill set will integrate seamlessly.' Kevin Durant's trade to the Houston Rockets involved a record seven teams. Picture: Getty Capela, a 31-year-old Swiss center, played his first six NBA seasons in Houston and the past five for the Hawks. He averaged 8.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 blocks a game and joins New Zealand's Steven Adams as a big-man backup to Turkey's Alperen Sengun. The Suns' haul after losing Durant included 18-year-old South Sudanese 7-foot-2 (2.18m) center Khaman Maluach, the 10th overall pick in June's NBA draft, plus Houston forward Dillon Brooks of Canada and guard Jalen Green, Atlanta wing Daeqwon Plowden, Minnesota forward Rasheer Fleming and Golden State guard Koby Brea of the Dominican Republic. The Hawks got cash and a 2031 draft pick swap from Houston while Brooklyn obtained two future second-round selections and sent the rights to incoming US rookie forward Adou Thiero to the Lakers. The Warriors obtained the rights to Australian forward Toohey, the 52nd pick in last month's draft, and US guard Jahmai Mashack, the last pick in the draft. Minnesota landed two future draft picks from the Suns and 18-year-old Australian 7-foot-3 center Zikarsky, the 45th pick in the draft, from the Lakers. AUSSIE STAR AXED IN $8M BLOW Boomers centre Jock Landale is set for a fresh NBA home after the talented big man was waived by the Houston Rockets on Friday. The 29-year-old had slipped down the Rockets' depth chart after the recent signing of Clint Capela and re-signing of New Zealand giant Steven Adams, with both behind starting centre Alperen Sengun. Landale was waived before his $A12m ($US 8m) contract for next season became guaranteed. He is now free to sign with any rival team once he clears waivers. Landale has played four seasons in the NBA, bouncing around between the Phoenix Suns, San Antonio Spurs and the Rockets. Reports, including from The Athletic's Kelly Iko, indicate there is interest in Landale which would keep his NBA career alive. - Staff writers Australia's Jock Landale has been waived by the Houston Rockets. Picture: Getty NBA CONTENDER SHOCK OPTION FOR BEN SIMMONS A return to New York is possible for Ben Simmons, only this time it would be on the other side of the Brooklyn Bridge. The Knicks have expressed interest in the polarising former Nets point guard in free agency, a league source confirmed Wednesday to The Post. Their interest in the three-time NBA All-Star was first reported by SNY. The 28-year-old Simmons had the remainder of his $40 million salary bought out by the Nets in February, and the former NBA Rookie of the Year signed for the rest of the season with the Clippers. The Knicks probably cannot afford to offer more than the veterans minimum to sign Simmons because the pending additions of Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele in free agency put the team at the second apron for salary-cap purposes. Picture: Angelina Katsanis / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / Getty Images via AFP They will use their taxpayer mid-level exception to sign Yabusele to a two-year deal worth $12 6-10 Simmons was hampered by back problems and appeared in only 90 games over three seasons with the Nets — averaging 6.5 points and 6.3 assists — following his acquisition from the 76ers in the James Harden trade in 2022. — New York Post EXUM LOCKS IN RETURN TO DALLAS Dante Exum will return to the Dallas Mavericks for another season, re-signing a one-year contract. The Aussie was sidelined with a broken hand throughout the last season but across his 20 appearances for the Mavs, he averaged a career high 8.7 points and 2.8 assists across 18.6 minutes of court time. Exum reportedly had two other deals on the table, however, returns to Dallas for his ninth season at the NBA. He also will join the number one pick, Cooper Flagg on the roster. SGA PUTS PEN TO PAPER ON RECORD DEAL AFP Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has agreed a four-year $285 million contract extension, the richest per-year contract in NBA history, US media reports said Tuesday. Gilgeous-Alexander, who guided the Thunder to the NBA championship last month after a campaign that saw him win regular season and finals Most Valuable Player awards, is now tied to the club through 2031. The 26-year-old Canadian point guard has two years remaining on his existing contract with Oklahoma City worth $79.1 million USD. The four additional seasons of his contract extension will see him receive $62.5 million, $68.6 million, $73.7 million and then $78.7 million in 2030-2031. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has signed a monster deal with the Thunder. Picture: AP Photo/Julio Cortez The deal gives Gilgeous-Alexander the highest annual salary in the NBA, eclipsing the average $64.3 million salary of the Philadelphia 76ers' Joel Embiid and the $62.8 million earned by the Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum. Gilgeous-Alexander was the fulcrum of the Thunder's dazzling 68-win Western Conference season, before inspiring the team to a 4-3 NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers last month. The Thunder ace averaged a league-high 32.7 points during the regular season and 30.3 points in the NBA Finals on his way to completing his MVP double. He became only the fourth player in history to win both NBA regular season and finals MVP awards as well as the league's scoring title, putting him into an exclusive club alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal. News of Gilgeous-Alexander's contract extension came as the NBA's free agency window cranked into top gear after the opening of the window on Monday. BUCKS GET BUSY ON DAY ONE In other significant early moves reported on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Bucks have waived all-star guard Damian Lillard after two seasons. Lillard suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the opening round of the playoffs and faces a lengthy recovery that is expected to sideline him for most if not all of next season. The Bucks meanwhile have moved to beef up their starting line-up with the acquisition of Indiana center Myles Turner, a key part of the Pacers run to last month's NBA Finals. Turner has reportedly agreed to a four-year $107 million deal with the club which will see him form a formidable partnership alongside the Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to ESPN. The Denver Nuggets meanwhile have brought in Jonas Valanciunas from the Sacramento Kings in trade for Dario Saric. CAVS COMMIT TO AUSSIES Jessica Robinson Just days after realising his NBA dream, Australian Tyrese Proctor has been granted an early commitment from the Cleveland Cavaliers. To launch their free agency, the Cavs have signed the Duke star and their 49th selection at last week's draft to a multi-year contract. The deal guarantees Proctor's first two years, full time with the NBA roster. The college alum sharing to his social media after the announcement: 'blessings.' Proctor, a starter for Duke on 38 occasions last season, averaged 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists, playing in a team alongside the number one draft pick Cooper Flagg (Dallas Mavericks), pick four Kon Knueppel (Charlotte Hornets) and pick 10 Khaman Maluach (Phoenix Suns). In addition to Proctor's deal, Aussie Luke Travers has re-signed another two-way contract to remain in Cleveland.

Messi suspended from Cincinnati clash after All-Star no-show
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami team-mate Jordi Alba have been suspended after the duo skipped Major League Soccer's All-Star game earlier this week, the league said Friday. MLS said in a statement Messi and Alba would be unavailable for Saturday's clash against FC Cincinnati 'due to their absence' at this week's All-Star showpiece. 'Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match,' the league said in a brief statement. Jordi Alba Lionel Messi have both been banned by MLS. Picture: AP Photo/Wilfredo Lee, File Messi and Alba had both been selected to play for a combined MLS side in Wednesday's game against a team drawn from Mexico's Liga-MX as part of the league's All-Star break. However both players withdrew from the showpiece early Wednesday for reasons that were not revealed. The 11th-hour snub left Messi and Alba both facing sanction. Under MLS rules, players selected for the All-Star game must participate unless they have a valid reason -- such as an injury -- not to do so. MLS commissioner Don Garber said Friday the league had been left with no choice but to suspend players from duty this weekend, describing the ruling as a 'very difficult decision'. 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league,' Garber said. 'I don't think there's a player -- or anyone -- who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. Messi was reportedly upset by the MLS ban. Picture: Ira L. Black / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision.' Garber however said MLS would review its existing policy in future. 'We're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward,' he said. 'I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.' Speaking on Wednesday, Garber said the league should have known earlier about the no-show, but expressed some sympathy for the gruelling schedule faced by Messi in recent weeks. The 38-year-old Argentinian superstar has played nine games in 35 days and played 90 minutes in each game, including four games in the FIFA Club World Cup. 'Miami's had a schedule that is unlike any other team,' Garber said. 'Most of our teams had a 10-day break. Miami hasn't. So we have to manage through that as a league.' Messi and Alba's participation in the game had been under a cloud after Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated last weekend he would have preferred the duo to be excused from All-Star duties. 'The players are called up. I'd prefer they rest, but it's not my decision,' Mascherano said.

Tszyu's loyal cutman Mark Gambin ready for Fundora rematch in Vegas
Mark Gambin is going back to the scene of the crime. And it's no exaggeration that it did look like a grizzly crime scene by the time Tim Tszyu walked out of the ring a bloody mess after his razor-thin split decision defeat to Sebastian Fundora last year. Gambin was the cut man that night, and the Sydneysider received intense criticism for his inability to stem the bleeding from the worst gash seen in professional boxing last year. So if there's anyone – other than Tszyu – who could be forgiven for wanting a personal redemption arc this weekend, it's Gambin, who flew out to Las Vegas on Monday night and will once again work the corner. But Gambin's response when asked about making things right on a personal level speaks volumes. Tszyu needed a miracle to stop the bleeding. Picture:It tells you everything you need to know about why Tszyu didn't rush into making wholesale changes to his team like much of the boxing world was urging him to last year. 'I can't wait to get in there and make sure everything's right for Tim and for him to get the win,' Gambin told Code Sports. 'I just want to get in there and rip in and work hard as a team for Tim. 'That's the most exciting part about it, just getting in and getting the win for Tim.' It's not about him, it's about the fighter. Which isn't very common in the cutthroat world of professional boxing. There were some incredibly dark moments for Gambin after the first Fundora fight. As the pile on hit and he became the scapegoat for the first loss of Tszyu's career, he deleted all his social media accounts. He had originally planned on spending a few days in Vegas after the fight, but left Sin City early, driving to Los Angeles and flying out the very next day. As Tszyu prepares for his rematch with Fundora at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this weekend, Gambin still doesn't want any of the spotlight. Tszyu and Gambin have worked together for years. Picture: Supplied 'That was a tough night for him, and he would've felt it the most out of anyone,' he said. 'We all would've had our little sad times when we got home, but he would've felt it the most. 'And we all understand that too. 'He's the athlete, he's the reason we're all flying to Las Vegas.' There were calls from at home and abroad for Tszyu to immediately ditch his team following the Fundora bloodbath. But after working with the same small crew for most of his 27 fight career, making wholesale changes was never an option. Gambin missed Tszyu's defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev when he needed an emergency appendectomy at the start of fight week and wasn't allowed to travel to Orlando. It sparked speculation that he'd been dumped from the team, but he was back on deck for Tszyu demolition of Joey Spencer in April, when he had remarkably little to do. 'It's also for me to thank him and make sure that he knows that I can cover anything he needs in that corner,' Gambin said. 'That's what I want to show him. Tim Tszyu with cutman Mark Gambin (L) and trainer Igor Goloubev (R). Picture: Supplied 'When we did Joey Spencer, I think Tim felt really good with the team around him, and we sort've just want to pay him back and make it so that he knows that we've all got his back.' As for any changes he's made, Gambin says he might need to pay for extra baggage after doubling up on everything in his fight night kit bag. 'Whatever I had before, I've now got two of,' he laughed. 'It's just about being completely ready – not that we weren't last time – but it puts it in perspective. 'If I had one packet of gauze, I've now got two packets. If I had five ampoules of adrenaline, now I've got 10. 'So my bag's getting pretty big, but I know I can do my job, mate. 'That was a freak night and it'll probably never happen again in the history of boxing. Touch wood. 'The majority of people wouldn't have stopped that cut. Actually, no one would've stopped it. 'You've just gotta cop it. I was there, no one else was there, and it was just a fountain. It wasn't a cut, it was a fountain, so it wasn't getting stopped.'
