Kopo reveals why he chose AmaTuks project

New AmaTuks head coach Kwanele Kopo has opened up about his decision to join the Motsepe Foundation Championship side ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Kopo stepped down from his role at Betway Premiership outfit Chippa United at the end of last year and has now found a new home at the University of Pretoria.

The Pretoria-based institution is aiming to secure promotion to the Betway Premiership for the first time since 2016. Kopo, who had reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, has signed a long-term contract with AmaTuks.
'I had a lot of offers from PSL and NFD teams but I think Tuks presented the best environment to fulfil their objectives,' Kopo said on Radio 2000.
'That is to oversee the entire youth programme and to direct the senior team. It's more of a package of the entire project at Tuks that really attracted me.
'In our country, there aren't a lot of coaches who want to be at the bottom to unearth big talent, but to sustain professional football you need strong youth structures.'
Although the mandate is to return the club to top-flight football within three years, Phakaaathi understands that a significant part of Kopo's key performance indicators will be centred on the development and progression of youth talent from the academy to the senior team.
'I like institutions and I worked at Wits University Football Club when I first arrived in Gauteng and that was an institution,' Kopo added.
'At SuperSport United, it became an institution because I went there to open the academy. A Chippa the view was to help the youth programme and strengthen the club as a whole.
'Again, Tuks presents that and a football club is not only about the senior team but it has to be an entire programme that starts with the youth and leads to the senior team.'

Machete Moloto will act as Kopo's assistant coach while Nic Stothard will remain in his role as the second assistant by virtue of being the head coach of the varsity team.

The Durban-based outfit took advantage of Royal AM's financial collapse and the termination of their PSL membership by swooping in early to sign some of Thwihli Thwahla's most experienced and reliable performers. 'It's always good to have a big squad to look at your options. The guys that came in towards the end of the season are very, very good players and had a huge impact at Royal AM,' said Dikgacoi, speaking at the launch of the KZN Premier's Cup on Tuesday. 'It's unfortunate that they came at a later stage [last season], which means they arrived unfit,' he explained. 'But now they're with us from the start of pre-season and they've already gotten used to the environment – the adjustment period is done.' Many of the players joined Abafana Bes'thende before the 2024/25 campaign ended, which allowed them to get a taste of the club's structure, style of play, and expectations. That head start, according to Dikgacoi, will be crucial as Arrows look to rebuild around a clearer vision. 'In terms of other signings, the club will make an announcement of both those who have come in and the ones who have gone,' he said. Kaizer Chiefs: 'R450K and two years, then I can join Amakhosi'
Bafana Bafana striker Percy Tau has revealed the monthly salary he would accept from Kaizer Chiefs or any other PSL club. The 31-year-old is now a free agent after leaving Qatar SC in May. He had joined the club on a short-term contract in January 2025 following his departure from Al Ahly. Last month, Tau revealed that he would accept nothing less than R450,000 per month if he were to return to the PSL. 'I am Kaizer [Motaung], I at Naturena offer you R450,000 a month. Do you accept?' Robert Marawa asked Tau if he would take 450k from Kaizer Chiefs. Tau, quick to consider the terms, replied, 'For how many years?' 'You sign two with an option,' Marawa added. 'Perfect,' Tau confirmed. Besides Chiefs, Tau also said he was open to rejoining Mamelodi Sundowns. 'If that situation were to happen [to receive an offer from Chiefs], I would pay attention to it,' he admitted. 'But there are still other clubs in the PSL. I mean, I played for Sundowns, so I cannot write them off. It's a team that I played for, I won, and I've got so much love for the team and the fans. If Sundowns were not to offer me a contract and Chiefs do, then it won't be my fault but theirs that I've gone to join Chiefs.' Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung hinted that the club is unlikely to sign Tau. 'Our industry is funny. When you want a player and when we start talking (and) you start talking about money first, he's not coming to our club. That's not your player,' Motaung said on the Smash Sports YouTube Channel. 'When you love the game, money will come. If you say, 'This is the club I want to play for' (we'll discuss other things later).' said Motaung.
