CPI(M) flays economic priorities of State, Centre
The CPI(M) leader U. Basavaraj said that though the people of the country pay ₹50 lakh crore in taxes to the Centre and ₹3-₹4 lakh crore is received by the State government, the amount was being used to benefit the corporate companies.
He was speaking at the concluding programme of the political campaign organised by the CPI(M) Mysuru district committee at Gandhi Square here.
Mr. Basavaraju said India ranked 105th in the Global Hunger Index, and the unemployment rate was high; hence, the claim that it was the fourth-largest economy was questionable.
Though nearly 70 crore people were receiving rations through the public distribution system and nutritious food was being distributed through the Anganwadis, the scourge of hunger and malnutrition persisted and put a question mark on the claims of being the fourth largest economy, said Mr. Basavaraju.
The economic policies of the Central and State governments also received flak, and the CPI(M) wondered whether the two were working for the corporates or the economically impoverished section of the population.
District secretary Jagadeesh Surya said that no project has been introduced in the district for job creation. There is neither a government law college nor an engineering college in the district, and no government seems to be concerned about it, he added.
The district ranks second in the State in terms of farmer suicides, but the State and Central governments are not focusing on improving farmers' lives here, he said.
Mr. Jagadish Surya urged the government to establish ward-level clinics and strengthen primary health centres in the district. He also demanded that farmers cultivating gomala (common) and forest lands be issued cultivation rights.
Homage was also paid to the former Chief Minister of Kerala V.S. Achuthanandan who died recently.

Guwahati: In a major political development in Tripura, members of the BJP and its key ally Tipra Motha clashed on Sunday at an area where BJP supporters claimed to have assembled to listen to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio broadcast Mann Ki Baat. Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Manikya Debburman in a recorded video posted on social media confirmed the clash happened. "We don't want any political violence in Tripura. If we the Tiprasa still keep fighting for the sake of a political flag, one day we will be left with no land. The BJP should also be careful. Many CPI(M) supporters are either in BJP or Motha and indulging in all these," he said. Eight motorcycles and two cars were damaged in the clash. A large number of police personnel have been posted in the area. Tension is still high, sources said.

CPM accuses Union govt of neglecting working class, favouring corporates
Mysuru: CPM state executive secretary U Basavaraj on Sunday accused the Union govt of adopting pro-corporate friendly policies, neglecting the interests of farmers, labourers, and other working-class people in the nation. The Union govt is giving a red carpet welcome to corporate houses, while the common people were affected by inflation and the rise in prices of essential commodities, he stated. He was addressing a rally organised by the district unit of CPM at Gandhi Square in the city. He said that even though the Union govt mobilised over Rs 50 lakh crore revenue every year from the states, with Karnataka contributing Rs 4 lakh crore in the form of tax, the Union govt has failed to protect the interest of the working class to curb inflation. He accused the Union govt of giving a red carpet welcome to corporate houses to loot the forest and mining resources of the nation when the common people were affected by inflation. Basavaraj also stated that even though the Union govt is distributing free ration to the poor under the public distribution system to over 80 crore people, people are dying from hunger. ‘GST Act little beyond understanding of common man'; HC overturns restaurant registration cancellation
Dehradun: Uttarakhand high court has quashed the cancellation of a restaurant's GST registration and allowed it to reapply, saying the GST Act remains "technically complex for citizens focused on running their daily businesses". The division bench of Chief Justice G Narendar and Justice Alok Mahra held that the delay in seeking revocation must be condoned as such cancellations affect sources of livelihood and reduce state revenue. The court passed the order earlier this week while hearing a petition filed by M/s River View Restaurant in Bageshwar. The bench noted that GST is still in its initial phase and that several of its provisions are beyond the understanding of a common person. The court directed the petitioner to file a fresh application for restoration of GST registration within three weeks. It also instructed the department to process the application within the following three-week period. Counsel for the respondents — commissioner and joint commissioner of state goods and services tax — said the petitioner had the option to apply for revocation under Section 30 of the Central GST Act, 2017. The provision allows a registered taxpayer, whose GST registration has been cancelled by the proper officer on their own motion, to apply for revocation of the cancellation order within 30 days — which can be extended up to 90 days — provided all pending returns are filed and tax dues are paid. The petitioner's counsel admitted that no such application was filed within the prescribed time. The court said, "We feel that the limitation should not take precedence for reconsideration of the order of cancellation. Keeping a larger objective of the involvement of livelihood and also loss of revenue to the department, we are of the considered opinion that delay in invoking the provisions of the Act is required to be condoned and is, accordingly, condoned." Several high courts, including Delhi, Madras and Gujarat, have in recent months condoned delays in GST registration revocation filings under section 30, particularly in cases involving small businesses, where courts observed that cancellation could affect income and state revenue.
