Emma out of Eastbourne despite fightback, Krejcikova stutters on
London
Emma Raducanu's attempt at a miraculous recovery against Maya Joint fell just short as she exited the Eastbourne Open on Wednesday in her final match before Wimbledon.
The British number one and former US Open champion looked beyond hope in her second-round battle with the Australian, trailing 5-2 in the deciding set.
But she produced an inspired spell on the grass on the English south coast, breaking Joint three times when she was serving for the match, to set up a tiebreak.
Victory was in sight when she got a mini-break to lead 4-3 but Joint reeled off four successive points to claim a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) victory and move into the quarter-finals.
Joint said: 'Today was really tough, there was a lot of ups and downs, I was happy I was able to tough it out at the end.
'I am really glad I was able to win this match.'
Raducanu revealed on Tuesday after her opening round win that she had received 'some pretty bad news' which remains undisclosed and that perhaps affected her against Joint as she seemed initially subdued on court.
The 22-year-old will now head to London where she will prepare for Wimbledon, the scene of her 2021 breakthrough. The grass grand slam begins on Monday.
Jodie Burrage meanwhile become the second Briton in two days to miss match points and fail to oust defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova.
Twenty four hours after Harriet Dart spurned victory, Burrage, the world number 161, was 40-0 up on the Czech's serve at 6-5 in the deciding set, but she could not get over the line, with Krejcikova winning the tiebreak.
In the men's draw, British lucky loser Billy Harris continued to take advantage of his reprieve, winning 6-3, 6-4 against Mattia Bellucci.

They are free to go – Maresca says unhappy players can leave Chelsea
PA Media/dpa Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has told any player unhappy at the club they can leave. It is proving a busy summer at Stamford Bridge with recent signings Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr now joined by Jamie Gittens, with Estevao Willian arriving before the new season. The likes of Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Axel Disasi and Ben Chilwell, who are not with the squad at the Club World Cup, are among those who could move on. There has also been speculation about the futures of Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson, who have been involved in the United States. Maresca said: 'My message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us. The ones that are not happy, they are free to go.' It is now vital Chelsea sell players to balance the books after they were punished by European governing body UEFA for breaches of financial regulations on Friday. Chelsea were fined ?31 million and will only be allowed to register newly-signed players for the Champions League if they end the transfer window with a 'positive balance'. Maresca, when asked after his side's 2-1 Club World Cup quarter-final win over Palmeiras in Philadelphia, did not comment on the matter. He said: 'I already struggle to do my job. To be honest, there are things that I don't pay attention to. 'I just pay attention to how to work day by day with the players. How can I improve them? How can I improve the team? And try to win as much as we can.' Maresca was happier to discuss the performance of Pedro, who was brought on for his debut following his £60million move from Brighton as a second-half substitute. His entrance was prompted by a stunning equaliser from Estevao, who shone on what proved his final outing for Palmeiras before his switch to London. Pedro played a prominent part in Chelsea's response before they eventually won with a late own goal. Maresca said: 'Even if he was on holiday he looks sharp, he looks good. We gave him some minutes. The reason why he's here is because we like him and we are sure that he's going to help us.' The game was also watched by English winger Gittens, whose £55million move from Borussia Dortmund was confirmed on Saturday. Maresca said: 'Jamie was here, he was on the pitch. He will be with us probably one or two days more. Then he will go for a holiday and come back when we're going to start the new season.'

Super-sub Hercules fires Fluminense into semis
PA Media/dpa Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Matheus Martinelli and substitute Hercules struck as Brazilian side Fluminense advanced to the Club World Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 win over Saudi club Al-Hilal. Martinelli fired into the top corner after finding some room in the box following Gabriel Fuentes' cutback five minutes before half-time although they were quickly pegged back in Orlando. While Al-Hilal were denied a penalty by VAR, Marcos Leonardo struck from close range following a corner in the 51st minute for his fourth goal of the tournament. But Hercules, who came off the bench to guarantee Fluminense's win over Inter Milan last time out, struck in the 70th minute as the super-sub fired low into the net after his initial shot was blocked. Fluminense will next take on Chelsea in New Jersey on Tuesday after a fortuitous late own goal snatched a 2-1 victory for the Blues over Palmeiras.

Tour de France: Philipsen in yellow after day one
PA Media/dpa London Jasper Philipsen won a chaotic opening stage of the Tour de France to take the first yellow jersey of the race on Saturday. Philipsen took his 10th career Tour stage but the first to put him into yellow as he beat Biniam Girmay in a much-reduced bunch sprint after crosswinds split the peloton to pieces. Overall hopefuls Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were both caught out, conceding 39 seconds to the main favourites Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, with the Dane having done much to instigate the splits inside the last 20 kilometres of the 185km stage that started and finished in Lille. Fewer than 40 riders made it into the front group but Philipsen's Alpecin-Deceuninck team had four of them and they made it count, putting together an ideal lead-out for Philipsen to comfortably beat Girmay and Soren Waerenshjold to the line. 'It's really amazing,' the Belgian said. 'My 10th victory is something I will never forget. The team performance was incredible. I think we were there all day. It was very nervous but we knew today could be our day and we have to be in the front and we were there in the split. 'The team did amazing and in the end we could just use our strength and finish it off. 'I have dreamt about (the yellow jersey). Already I had the green jersey from two years ago but to have the yellow jersey hanging somewhere in my house in the next years is going to be amazing.'
