If you're in the habit of spritzing perfume on your wrists, you're missing out on a key piece of real estate: your hair. As a fragrance-obsessed editor, I find hair perfumes to be a vastly underrated category. They come at a snip of the price of eaux de parfum — which typically feature a higher fragrance oil concentration — making them a low-commitment way to trial a new signature scent and a great option for gifting. Unlike traditional perfumes, hair perfumes typically contain little to no alcohol and instead boast moisturizing, shine-enhancing ingredients that help nourish rather than dry out your ends.
Standing at just 5 ft tall, I've come to learn that my hair often makes the first impression when I talk to taller people. Having hair that smells amazing feels like a small but meaningful way to make a good first impression. I personally find that my hair holds on to scent molecules longer than my skin does, especially in the summer when I'm sweating a lot in the heat. Not only are hair perfumes great for scent layering, but they also leave a lovely trail when I move around.
Ahead, I've rounded up a list of hair perfumes I'll always keep on my beauty shelf.
This intensely feminine hair mist is by far my most complimented perfume. I always get told that I 'smell so expensive' when I hug someone while wearing this scent. Bulgarian rose, bergamot, jasmine, and pink pepper form the basis of this sensual and spicy floral scent, which lingers on my hair for hours and has incredible projection. I'd say that because of how heady the rose heart notes are, it's more suitable for nighttime wear.
Ellis Brooklyn Peaches Hair and Body Fragrance Mist, $48 $36
Peaches is the hair perfume equivalent of a refreshing cocktail on an unbearably hot and sticky afternoon. It has a candy-like initial blast, but the dry down is surprisingly photorealistic: juicy peach notes smell exactly like the actual fruit, while orris and ambrette musk bring a skin-like intimacy that reminds me of peach fuzz. It's an ideal beach perfume that feels carefree and flirty, without being too much.
Diptyque Do Son Hair Mist, $76
Do Son needs no introduction. This gorgeous white floral scent is a classic for good reason: it has a linear scent profile that's equal parts elegant and distinctive, thanks to intoxicating tuberose, gardenia and orange blossom. The hair mist version is heavily slept on, in my opinion: the hit of tuberose is just as potent, and the packaging is equally beautiful as the full-size eau de parfum.
Phlur Vanilla Smoke Body & Hair Mist, $25
Vanilla Smoke marks an interesting deviation from the sweet gourmand perfumes that Phlur has helped popularize in the last couple of years. The scent is still anchored by warm and comforting vanilla, but smoky incense and sappy birch are here to inject depth and personality. The result is a woody, spicy aroma that almost smells like a burning vanilla candle. It's so unique and elevated, especially considering the $25 price tag.
Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Hair Perfume, $82
I reach for this crowd-pleaser of a scent when I need to impress. The bergamot, mandarin, and orange top notes lift my mood at first spray, and as the scent dries down, my nose is hit with an exquisite concoction of rose, jasmine, and ylang ylang. I love catching whiffs of this every time I move my head, and it helps me feel more self-assured. I'm glad that Chanel has retained its chic glass bottle and square cap, as many luxury brands package hair perfumes in a plain-looking aerosol bottle.
Gisou Lavender Berry Honey Infused Hair Perfume, $25
Gisou's hair perfumes are my go-to for when I'm getting ready for bed. There's something about making my hair smell like delicious honey that helps calm my thoughts, not to mention nourish the hair and boost shine. I carry the mini version of the lavender and blackberry scent on my travels; I'm convinced it helps me fall asleep faster.
If you can't get enough of clean, musky perfumes, this Byredo classic is the one. There's a reason Mojave Ghost is enduringly popular: it envelopes you in a cloud of magnolia, cedar, and musk that smells so alluring on freshly-showered hair. I like spraying this liberally onto my paddle brush and pulling it through my hair.
Le Monde Gourmand Lait De Coco Hair & Body Mist, $28
It doesn't get any more summery than this coconut-based scent. I'm normally not a fan of sweet gourmand perfumes, but here the combination of coconut, vanilla praline, and bergamot really works to create something that smells delicious and inviting without coming off as cloying or juvenile.
Parfums De Marly Delina Hair Mist, $93
Delina is an all-time R29 editor favorite; we can't get enough of this sweet-yet-sophisticated fragrance, which greets the nose with a buoyant cocktail of lychee, peonies, rose, and rhubarb. I'm very happy to report that this fruity floral scent hits just as hard in hair perfume format. In fact, the creamy vanilla and cashmeran base notes smell more prominent on the hair. This is a great one to pop in the purse for fun summer plans, from festivals to picnics and garden parties.
Ruka Hair Perfume, $35
Shop This
I spritz this scent in place of a leave-in conditioner or hair oil when the weather gets too hot. It contains mongongo oil, an ingredient from Zambia that is rich in nourishing vitamin E and omega-6. There's also aloe vera, which prevents breakage. My hair immediately feels softer after using this, and the refreshing coconut and musk scent is simply gorgeous.

TSG Consumer Partners Acquires Phlur

On Tuesday, private equity firm TSG Consumer Partners announced a definitive agreement to acquire indie fragrance label Phlur, The Business of Beauty can exclusively confirm. A value for the deal was not disclosed; the brand is expected to generate over $150 million in retail sales this year, according to chief executive Elizabeth Ashmun. The masstige line was relaunched in February 2022 by brand accelerator The Center, founded by Ben Bennett, and influencer Chriselle Lim. It has become known for mood-centered scents like the best-selling Missing Person, which was inspired by Lim's divorce and a longing for an ex lover. 'I was in a very broken place at the time, and I couldn't find any inspiration outside of my deep pain … it was different from the typical fragrance, where they put everything on a silver platter and they make everything beautiful,' said Lim. 'What we were able to offer with Phlur was really something different that hasn't been done in fragrance, which was rawness and vulnerability and transparency.' Phlur's evocative fragrances and marketing has resonated not only with scent-obsessed Gen-Z and Millennial customers but also choosy shoppers looking for elevated products. Ashmun, who joined the brand in 2024, said that 50 percent of its customers are net new to the category. Phlur is reportedly the number two growth brand at Sephora US and Canada, and jumped from the top 20 fine fragrances to top 10 in the last year. At Space NK, it has broken into the retailer's top 10 overall lines and has seen triple-digit growth. With the acquisition, TSG Consumer pushes further into the influencer-founded space, a tricky but recently lucrative sector of the beauty industry. Last year, it invested in skincare and makeup line Summer Fridays, founded by influencers Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland. It previously held a stake in Huda Kattan's Huda Beauty. Prior TSG beauty investments have included megabrands E.l.f. Beauty and It Cosmetics. In a challenging M&A market, which includes a slew of cosmetic brands in holding patterns, a select few celebrity- and influencer-fronted brands have broken through. The most notable example as of late is Hailey Bieber's Rhode, acquired by E.l.f. in May for an eye-watering $1 billion. Mona Kattan's Kayali was purchased by private equity firm General Atlantic and Kattan from TSG in February, and Susan Yara's Naturium, also developed by The Center, was acquired by E.l.f. Beauty in 2023. Phlur, which only began its sale process this year, was 'aggressively pursued' by TSG Consumer, said Hadley Mullin, senior managing director, and became the obvious partner for the brand early on. 'It was coming up time and time again as a standout,' said Mullin, adding that the firm chooses to work with beauty brands that have been productive in existing retail, with wider untapped distribution. 'The most important voice in the room when we're evaluating which brand to invest in is the consumer, followed by the retailer,' she said. Phlur founder Chriselle Lim (left) and chief executive Elizabeth Ashmun. (Phlur) A Non-Traditional Approach Phlur's origin story is unusual in today's cut-throat beauty landscape. Originally launched in 2015 as a digital-first, 'clean' fragrance proposition by entrepreneurs Cynthia and Eric Korman in Austin Texas, Phlur was purchased Bennett in 2021. Lim joined as co-owner and creative director that same year. Lim was also an unexpected partner for Phlur. For starters, the 40-year-old influencer was better known for her fashion sensibility than her taste in perfumes. Lim was part of the original wave of bloggers-turned-influencers, launching 'The Chriselle Factor' on YouTube in 2011. While beauty partnerships factored into her content, it was only as a byproduct of her style focus. She previously told The Business of Beauty she 'never ever thought I would own a fragrance company or even be a part of anything related to fragrance.' Lim will stay on with TSG Consumer as creative director along with Ashmun and Phlur's roughly 20-person team. As product and marketing have become interchangeable in beauty, Lim's creative lens and personal touch has made Phlur a hit. The line's first scent after its relaunch, Missing Person, recalled the feeling of longing, so the brand sent out press and influencer gifting with oversized men's t-shirts drenched in the fragrance. She also spoke candidly on social media about her divorce and subsequent depression. Lim credits the success of Phlur not only to timing, but also due to its aesthetic. The brand's three best-sellers, or Phlur 'icons', are 'Missing Person,' 'Vanilla Skin' and 'Father Figure'; body mists include a scent dubbed 'Heavy Cream.' More recently, Lim has stepped back from campaign imagery to let the line stand on its own, something buyers need proof of when looking to invest, with the hope of building a forever label. 'Phlur is a brand; it's not just Chriselle's fragrance line,' said Mullin. The Smell of Success Since the pandemic, fragrance has remained beauty's fastest-growing category. According to BoF's The State of Fashion: Beauty report with McKinsey & Co, the sector is expected to grow by 6 percent by 2030, outpacing skincare and makeup. Buoyed by a younger customer base, cheaper prices and new formats, a fresh guard of challengers has upended the previously dominant designer playbook. While scents like Dior Sauvage, Creed Aventus and Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle remain top sellers, customers are ditching the idea of a signature scent in favour of scent layering. Accessible prices make that kind of outfitting much easier; a Phlur 50 ml fragrance is $99 versus $143 for Coco Mademoiselle. 'The model's elegant price architecture allows the brand to be profitable from a corporate standpoint while providing an accessible price point for trial,' said Colin Welch, managing director and head of New York, at TSG Consumer Partners. Phlur reported that sales are split roughly 50 percent between retail and e-commerce. Sales are expected to grow 65 percent year-on-year in 2026. Bodycare brand Sol de Janeiro became a breakout success on the strength of its next-gen fragrances, and since the label's acquisition by L'Occitane in 2021, buyers have been on the hunt for the next indie powerhouse. Many have tried to fill that void, including Glossier, which remains focussed on the category versus its once-core skincare and makeup, and Dedcool, which offers fragrances in an array of formats including detergent. Phlur moved from eau de parfums into body mists and ancillary products like deodorant and body oils in 2023. It has ditched the traditional fragrance flanker approach of staying true to a core scent, launching two original EDPs and up to seven extensions each year. Ashmun said that new formats, a push towards men and a broader global footprint are top of mind for the brand as it transitions to new ownership. (50 percent of Lim's followers are based in Europe.) While the relevance of famous founders ebbs and flows, Lim said those with longevity are 'more intentional' with how they speak to their audiences. She cites her evolving career as proof. 'Storytelling is one of my superpowers,' Lim said. Hailey Bieber's Rhode Deal Won't Pay For Justin's Debts

Hailey Bieber's business is standing on its own regardless of speculation on the future of her $1 billion Rhode deal. On July 10, Hailey's husband, Justin Bieber, reportedly settled a financial dispute with his former manager, Scooter Braun. The "Peaches" singer reportedly agreed to pay $26 million to Scooter's company, HYBE, to reconcile money they paid to AEG for his canceled 2022 Justice tour, according to insider sources to People and TMZ. In addition, Justin agreed to pay $5.5 million to cover half of the $11 million in unpaid commissions he reportedly owed Scooter, bringing the total to $31.5 million. On the same day the settlement was reported, we learned Justin was releasing his seventh album, Swag, and launched his new fashion brand SKYLRK. Amidst this, speculation arose that Justin's settlement was postponed to line up with Hailey's $1 billion Rhode acquisition from Beauty in May to help with his debts. But, according to People, a rep for Hailey revealed that Rhode's financial business is not associated with Justin's settlement. "The historic sale of Rhode is a huge accomplishment for Hailey and is completely separate from her husband and his business affairs." Rhode was launched back in 2022 with Hailey as the founder, and now that it has been acquired, she will also serve as a strategic advisor, a chief creative officer, and head of product innovation to oversee marketing and innovative production. In May, a source told People, "This deal came to her," and she didn't even have to seek a buyer. "She's incredibly excited about this new step. She's proud of how far rhode has come, and she truly believes that teaming up with e.l.f will help take the brand to the next level. The resources and support they're bringing to the table are everything she's been hoping for." "To be acquired and recognized by such a powerful global company feels like such an honor to her. She can't wait to take Rhode global. She also received a generous cash payout as part of the deal." So, there you have it! Hailey and Rhode are standing on cosmetic business, and Justin's financial affairs apparently have nothing to do with it. I love a good power couple! We reached out to Justin team for further comments, and we'll let you know when we hear back.
