
Delta plans to use AI in ticket pricing draws fire from US lawmakers
"Delta's current and planned individualized pricing practices not only present data privacy concerns, but will also likely mean fare price increases up to each individual consumer's personal 'pain point' at a time when American families are already struggling with rising costs," Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner and Richard Blumenthal wrote in a letter dated Monday and made public on Tuesday.

The senators cited recent comments from Delta that the airline plans to deploy AI-based revenue management technology across 20% of its domestic network by the end of 2025 in partnership with Fetcherr, an AI pricing company.
They said a Delta executive had earlier told investors the technology is capable of setting fares based on a prediction of "the amount people are willing to pay for the premium products related to the base fares."
The airline said in a statement: "There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing or plans to use that targets customers with individualized offers based on personal information or otherwise."

Delta added that dynamic pricing has been used for more than three decades, in which pricing fluctuates based on a variety of factors like overall customer demand but not a specific consumer's personal information.
Delta said AI technology for dynamic pricing is being tested to eliminate manual processes while accelerating analysis and adjustments and it emphasized all customers see the same exact fares and offers in all retail channels.
Delta said it was testing AI for use in forecasting demand for specific routes and flights, adapting to market conditions in real-time, factoring thousands of variables simultaneously and learning from each pricing decision to improve future outcomes.
In January, Blumenthal along with Senators Maggie Hassan and Josh Hawley asked Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines to disclose whether they were manipulating seat fees by using customers' personal information to charge different fees to passengers on the same flight.
The senators said the airlines were apparently "using customers' personal information to charge different seat fees to passengers on the same flight" despite having the same fare.
Frontier and Spirit did not immediately respond to requests for comment on their current practices on Tuesday.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has warned that while users often reveal the most personal details of their lives to ChatGPT, their interactions lack privacy protections and could potentially be produced for lawsuits or other legal reasons. During an episode of 'This Past Weekend' podcast with Theo Von, Altman noted that though interactions between patients and doctors or clients and lawyers are protected by privilege — meaning they cannot often be used against an individual in court — this is not the case for a person's interactions with ChatGPT. He emphasised that the policy framework for this protection is lacking, and that it needs to be urgently addressed. 'And right now, if you talk to a therapist or a lawyer or a doctor about those problems, there's legal privilege for it. Like, there's doctor-patient confidentiality, there's legal confidentiality, whatever. And, we haven't figured that out yet for when you talk to ChatGPT,' Altman said during the podcast, adding that OpenAI could be forced to produce such evidence even if he disagreed with the mandate. Altman observed that young people 'especially' used ChatGPT as a life coach or a therapist. He advocated for a human-AI chatbot privacy standard comparable to that existing between a patient and their therapist. OpenAI has in the past criticised the New York Times, claiming that as part of its lawsuit against the AI startup, the media company 'asked the court to force us to retain all user content indefinitely going forward..'

Audi cuts forecast over US tariffs and restructuring costs
German automaker Volkswagen's premium brand Audi lowered its full-year financial guidance on Monday, citing the impact of higher U.S. import tariffs and ongoing restructuring costs. The Ingolstadt-based company now expects revenue of between 65 billion euros and 70 billion euros ($76 billion and $82 billion), down from its previous forecast of 67.5 billion euros to 72.5 billion euros. Audi also cut its operating margin forecast to 5 per cent to 7 per cent, compared to the earlier range of 7 per cent to 9 per cent. Audi said it is still assessing the implications of the trade deal reached between the United States and the European Union on Sunday. The agreement set a 15 per cent baseline U.S. tariff on imports from the EU, including cars, which had previously faced customs duties of 27.5 per cent. "Should the 15 per cent tariff stay in place long-term, it would still put Audi at a competitive disadvantage, because its key peers have a more pronounced U.S. production footprint," said Fabio Hoelscher, an analyst from Warburg Research. Audi is among the carmakers most exposed to U.S. tariffs as it has no manufacturing facilities in the United States. Although the deal provides clarity on the new tariff regime, enabling better operational and strategic planning, the 15 per cent rate still represents a structural shift from the 2.5 per cent rate before U.S. President Donald Trump took office, said Pal Skirta, equity analyst from Metzler Equities. That leaves German carmakers facing persistently higher U.S. tariffs on their exports and long-term competitiveness challenges, he said. The Volkswagen Group also cut its full-year guidance on Friday after taking a $1.5-billion tariff hit in the first half of 2025. Global automakers have booked billions of dollars of losses and some issued profit warnings due to U.S. import tariffs. The European industry is also facing stiffening competition from China, and domestic regulations aimed at speeding up the electric-vehicle transition.
