Elon Musk's stunning three-word reaction to SpaceX Starship exploding in fireball

Independent19-06-2025

Elon Musk shared a stunning three-word reaction after his SpaceX rocket exploded into a massive fireball while being tested Wednesday night in Texas.
The SpaceX owner seemed to joke about the failed test, writing, 'Just a scratch' on X after the Starship suffered a 'major anomaly' and shot up into flames, ruining yet another test for the space company.
While SpaceX hopes their Starship will one day carry humans to the Moon and Mars, test flights in May, March, and January also ended in failures. The Starship program, SpaceX's central project and the most powerful rocket to date, is also crucial to NASA's Artemis program.
Meanwhile, SpaceX chalked the explosion up to the rocket experiencing 'a major anomaly' just ahead of its flight test.
'A safety clear area around the site was maintained throughout the operation and all personnel are safe and accounted for,' the company said.
SpaceX said that there are no hazards to residents in the surrounding areas; however, people are being asked to avoid the site.
The company said it is working with local officials to respond to the explosion.
Footage captured the 36 rocket, which was undergoing a static fire test, abruptly exploding into a dramatic fireball around 11 p.m. Wednesday night.
Video from NASASpaceflight.com shows the rocket standing in the dock before exploding without warning, sending a wave of flames toward the cameras.
It's not the first time Musk has downplayed his company's shortcomings. Following the SpaceX explosion in May, he said, 'Success is uncertain, but entertainment is guaranteed!'

A-List Hollywood heartthrob is unrecognizable in long beard and wig in Project Hail Mary trailer

The trailer for Amazon MGM's Project Hail Mary has dropped and its A-List star looks unrecognizable. Ryan Gosling plays bookish school-teacher turned astronaut Ryland Grace in forthcoming science fiction film adapted from author Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. He looks completely different in a long haired wig and long, scruffy beard. Fans of this actor may be able to suss out his identity through his soulful blue eyes that give away his true identity, no matter how different he looks from his everyday style. In the trailer, Ryan wakes up in this disheveled state, confused and wondering where he is. He has no memory of his past or how he ended up on the spaceship. His character states that he just woke up from a coma in outer space and is 'several light-years' away from his apartment. 'I'm not an astronaut,' he declares multiple times, as the trailer reveals the event leading up to him going to space. Ryland is a middle school teacher with a PhD in molecular biology and is recruited by a space force to figure out why the stars, including the sun, are dying out. As the trailer goes on it is revealed the stars were infected with something deadly and it is Ryland's job to find out why. Ryland's mission to space is a 'Hail Mary,' last ditch effort to stop the stars from dying and save all life forms. He expresses hesitancy at being tasked to save all life, saying, 'I understand the stakes, I do. But my place is in the classroom.' He did not want to go to space but when he was told he'd die along with everyone else, he changed his mind. As the trailer goes on, we see Ryland shave his tangled beard off and break down in tears at the enormity of the mission he's been tasked with. At the end of the trailer, Ryland declares that he's met an alien and he tries to teach it Hacky Sack and how to do a thumbs-up. It is revealed that the alien has been tasked with the same job as Ryland. He needs to figure out how to save his species. The trailer features Harry Styles' Sign of the Times as it follows Ryland's attempts to save, essentially, the universe. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and hits theaters on March 20, 2026. The first footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Sandra Hüller's character ominously says, 'The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.' At CinemaCon, Gosling took a playful swipe at his directors, saying of Lord and Miller, 'They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.' 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon, per Variety. He continued: 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' Project Hail Mary also features Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's The Zone of Interest" and Anatomy of a Fall. The screenplay was written by Drew Goddard.

Can intermittent fasting help you lose weight?

Obesity affects two in five U.S. adults, contributing to nearly $173 billion in annual healthcare costs and increasing risks of chronic conditions. A new study published in The BMJ, involving researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, analyzed the effectiveness of various intermittent fasting strategies. The research found that alternate-day fasting, which involves fasting for a full day every other day, was the most effective form of intermittent fasting for weight management. Alternate-day fasting led to 2.8 pounds greater weight loss compared to traditional calorie-restricted diets and improved cardiometabolic risk factors such as waist circumference and cholesterol levels. Despite its benefits, the study noted that the observed weight loss did not meet the minimally important clinical threshold, and individuals should consult healthcare providers before adopting intermittent fasting.

Google strikes landmark nuclear fusion deal

Google will start harnessing power from a cutting-edge nuclear fusion company as it seeks to use cleaner energy for its artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. The search giant has agreed to buy 200 megawatts (MW) of power starting in the 2030s from US fusion start-up Commonwealth Energy Systems, which is planning a nuclear fusion plant. Google will also take part-ownership of the business, which previously raised $1.8bn (£1.3bn) in 2021 from investors including Bill Gates and Tiger Global, making it the best-funded private fusion business. Silicon Valley giants like Google have been hunting for new sources of clean energy as they seek to power AI data centre infrastructure. The race to build more powerful AI tools requires vast computing power from thousands of energy-intensive processors. A breakthrough in nuclear fusion would create a source of practically limitless clean energy, which could fuel the AI boom. Commonwealth, a spin-out from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is building a tokamak – a type of fusion reactor – that it calls 'Sparc'. It is planning to build power plants that can each generate 400MW of power, roughly the same as a typical natural gas plant, powering 280,000 homes. 'The world wants fusion' Scientists have spent decades attempting to crack fusion power, which mirrors the nuclear reactions that take place at the centre of the sun. Unlike nuclear fission, where atoms are split to release energy, fusion sees atoms forced together. Bob Mumgaard, Commonwealth's chief executive, said the deal with Google was a 'strong signal that the world wants fusion' and that it would support 'bringing fusion power to the grid at scale'. Despite this, high-profile projects attempting to demonstrate the technology, such as ITER in France, have been long-delayed and are running billions of pounds over budget. While the financial terms of Google's deal were not disclosed, Axios reported earlier this year that Commonwealth was in the process of raising as much as $1bn. It is not the first time a tech company has agreed to buy as-yet unproven fusion power. Microsoft previously agreed to buy fusion power from US start-up Helion, which is backed by OpenAI founder Sam Altman. Helion is aiming to have a fusion plant by 2028. Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Facebook have all been in talks over nuclear power deals. Microsoft agreed to re-open a nuclear power plant at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania to power its AI technology. Facebook also signed a deal that saved a nuclear plant in Illinois from closure. As well as conventional nuclear power, it has been considering investments in a new wave of advanced 'small modular reactors'. Last week, the UK announced £2.5bn of funding over the next five years to develop fusion power. As part of Labour's Industrial Strategy, the UK will work on building a tokamak prototype by 2040.
