Post Op Sindoor, India to fast-track launch of 52 defence surveillance satellites

Time of Indiaa day ago

NEW DELHI: With the need for 'deep' as well as 'persistent' surveillance of enemy territory being reinforced by
Operation Sindoor
, India plans to fast-track the launch of 52 dedicated satellites for the armed forces.
It is also in the process of finalising a comprehensive military space doctrine.
Phase 3 of Space-Based Surveillance (SBS) programme, which was approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security in Oct last year at a cost of Rs 26,968 crore, involves the construction and launch of 21 satellites by Isro and 31 by three private companies.
The first of these satellites is to be launched by April next year, with all 52 to be deployed before 2029-end, as part of the project being spearheaded by Defence Space Agency (DSA) under the Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) of defence ministry.
'Work is underway to compress these timelines to launch the satellites faster into the low earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbit. The three private companies that have got the contracts have been told to speed up building of the satellites,' a source told TOI.
'The aim of SBS-3 is to cover much larger areas of China and Pakistan, as well as the Indian Ocean Region, with shorter revisit times (interval between two consecutive surveillance sweeps of the same location) and much better resolution.

The space doctrine is also being fine-tuned,' he added.
Parallelly, IAF is pursuing the case for three high-altitude platform system (HAPS) aircraft, which are basically unmanned aerial vehicles or 'pseudo-satellites' that operate in the stratosphere for long durations on ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) missions, as reported by TOI earlier.
During Operation Sindoor, which saw intense hostilities with Pakistan from May 7 to 10, India used domestic satellites like Cartosat, as well as foreign commercial ones, for tracking military movements in Pakistan.
'We need to shorten our OODA (observe, orient, decide and act) loop. The faster India gets the 52-satellite constellation up in space the better,' another source said.
India also needs to put in place its satellite shield since China is developing weapons like direct ascent anti-satellite missiles, co-orbital satellites, electronic warfare equipment, and directed energy weapons like high-powered lasers to contest or deny other nations access to the space domain.
China's military space programme has expanded from operating just 36 satellites in 2010 to over 1,000 by 2024, with 360 of them dedicated to ISR missions.
At a seminar earlier this month, IDS chief Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit had stressed the need to extend India's 'surveillance envelope' while underlining the critical role of 'real-time situational awareness' in conflicts.
'We must detect, identify and track potential threats not when they approach our borders, but when they are still in their staging areas, airfields and bases, deep within an adversary's territory,' he said.
China's creation of PLA Aerospace Force in April last year underlined its recognition of space as the 'ultimate high ground' in modern warfare. 'Their satellites have recently demonstrated sophisticated 'dogfighting' manoeuvres in LEO, practising tactics designed to track and potentially disable adversary space assets. They have evolved from a 'kill chain' to a 'kill mesh' — an integrated network that seamlessly interweaves ISR satellites with weapon systems,' Air Marshal Dixit said.

Solar a Jio moment for Mukesh Ambani? Reliance shares get highest target price

Betting that the production of solar modules could trigger a re-rating similar to what occurred in 2017 after the launch of Reliance Jio, domestic brokerage firm Nuvama has issued the highest target price of Rs 1,801 for Reliance Industries (RIL). ADVERTISEMENT At its recent analyst meet, RIL announced the start of its first line of HJT module manufacturing facility with a capacity of 1 GW, which can be scaled up in phases to a fully integrated 10 GW by early CY26. Nuvama's channel checks with key industry participants reveal that RIL has offered to sell its HJT modules in the lucrative domestic market, as the rollout of its power generation business is still some time away. 'RIL's modules business (20 GW capacity) yields an EV of $20 billion, which could trigger a valuation re-rating for RIL, similar to the trend seen post-RJIO's launch in 2017. RIL's New Energy rollout will not only add over 50% to PAT but also re-rate valuations, including the O2C business, given its net-zero carbon target by 2035,' Nuvama analysts Jal Irani and others said in a note.O2C is currently RIL's largest profit base, contributing two-fifths of EBITDA and more than half of attributable PAT. In addition to integrated solar facilities, RIL plans to set up a 30 GWh battery facility. Green hydrogen and electrolyser manufacturing are on track, with the company announcing a technology tie-up with Nel ASA. The company also aims to set up 55 CBG plants. We are raising the SOTP-based target price to Rs 1,801—the highest on the Street—to factor in the potential for higher-than-expected module profits; we reiterate our 'BUY' rating,' Nuvama done by the brokerage show PAT from the New Energy segment (modules plus power) rising from Rs 20 billion in FY27E to Rs 114 billion by FY30E, implying a 140% CAGR over FY26–30E. ADVERTISEMENT 'On our conservative assumptions, the New Energy share in PAT is expected to rise to 9% by FY30E. A faster ramp-up in capacity additions and utilisation could fuel more potential upside than our current numbers indicate. We believe additional businesses in the New Energy segment will also start contributing in a phased manner. This should enable RIL to meet its target of increasing PAT contribution from the New Energy segment to over 50% by 2030, as announced during the AGM in 2024,' it note also drew comparisons with Waaree Energies and Premier, whose EVs stand at around $10 billion and $6 billion, respectively. ADVERTISEMENT RIL's 20 GW fully integrated solar equipment manufacturing facility could potentially translate into a much higher and Premier are trading at 14x and 15x FY27E EV/EBITDA multiples, respectively. Ascribing a 15x EV/EBITDA multiple to RIL's modules business (20 GW capacity) yields an EV of $20 billion, which could trigger a valuation re-rating for RIL's stock—similar to the trend seen after RJIO's launch in 2017. RIL's New Energy rollout is expected not only to add over 50% to PAT but also to re-rate valuations across the business, including the O2C segment, given its net zero-carbon target by 2035, the brokerage said. RIL shares were trading 1.25% higher at Rs 1,519 on the BSE and are up over 24% so far in the calendar year 2025. ADVERTISEMENT (You can now subscribe to our ETMarkets WhatsApp channel)

Delhi HC stays ₹340 crore damages order against Amazon in trademark case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday stayed an earlier order that had directed Amazon Technologies to pay Rs 340 crore in damages to Lifestyle Equities for alleged trademark infringement involving the ' Beverly Hills Polo Club ' brand. The division bench also stayed the cost imposed by the single judge. The stay is subject to Amazon complying with the remaining directions issued by the single judge bench in the case, the division bench led by Justice Hari Shankar ordered. In May, Amazon Technologies approached the division bench to challenge the February ruling. The single judge, Justice Prathiba M Singh, had ordered the company to stop selling, advertising, or dealing in any products that used the mark or logo similar to Lifestyle's registered trademark. Lifestyle Equities and Lifestyle Licensing claimed ownership of the 'Beverly Hills Polo Club' trademark and said the brand held goodwill in both domestic and global markets. They had launched the brand in India in 2007 and offer a range of products including clothing, watches, eyewear, bags, and footwear. Amazon had told the division bench that the single judge's findings lacked supporting evidence of infringement and said the matter needed detailed legal scrutiny. Live Events The earlier judgment had observed that Amazon Technologies was offering similar products at a fraction of Lifestyle's pricing, and called it a strategy of obfuscation, given Amazon's market dominance.
