
Glasgow Life's new strategy to increase physical activity
The plan, approved by the City Administration Committee, seeks to integrate sport and physical activity into the daily routines of Glaswegians.

It targets health inequalities and promotes diversity, equality, and inclusion, with success measured by a positive increase in activity levels.
Changes in environments, practices, and policies will be monitored in addition to evidence-based shifts in activity levels within targeted communities.
Various partners, including sports clubs, health services, educational services, and public health organisations, will collaborate on the strategy's implementation.
The strategy has been deemed essential in light of figures revealed around the state of physical wellbeing in Glasgow.
Figures have shown that 34% of adults and 31% of children in Glasgow do not meet the NHS's weekly physical activity guidelines.
Bailie Annette Christie, chair of Glasgow Life and Glasgow City Council convenor for culture, sport, and international relations, said: "Physical activity and sport have the power to boost mental and physical wellbeing, unite communities, and transform lives.
"This strategy focuses on addressing the issues that prevent people from getting involved in physical activity by offering solutions to help more Glaswegians and visitors to our city get active and experience the benefits of an active lifestyle."
The strategy aims to make Glasgow a leader in creating an encouraging environment for physical activity.
It proposes a single referral point for people who need support to be active and plans to develop the Live Active Exercise Referral Scheme and the Live Well Community Referral Programme.
Dr Emilia Crighton, director of public health at NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "The health benefits of physical activity and active living are well-known.
"Physical exercise is often branded a 'miracle cure', due to the critical role it plays in improving physical and mental wellbeing and helping to address a range of illnesses and health conditions.
"Creating an environment where physical activity becomes the easy option for people is central to health and wellbeing, and it is at the heart of this strategy.
'The focus on accessibility, availability, existing community assets, and greenspace, together with building confidence and skills for people of all ages, are critical to enabling this city to become an Active Glasgow – and therefore a healthier Glasgow.'
The plan also includes widening access to green spaces, recreational, and sports spaces, and ensuring they are safe and welcoming for all.

Paul Johnston, chief executive of Public Health Scotland, said: "Implementation of this strategy will transform environments, infrastructure, and services across Glasgow, making it easier for individuals to incorporate movement into their daily lives.
"Being physically active is hugely beneficial to improving our physical and mental health and contributes towards the prevention of illness and diseases.
"We hope this will be the first of many local strategies which will drive the necessary changes to create a healthier, more active Scotland."

Glasgow councillor brands pupil vape use stats 'terrifying'
During Thursday's full council meeting, Councillor Jill Pidgeon asked what steps were being taken by the local authority to mitigate the increase in vape use in schools. Councillor Pidgeon was advised that vaping among young people in Glasgow's schools had become a growing concern, with data showing 'a significant rise in usage' and this was linked to an increase in disposable vape use. At the beginning of June, the UK government banned the sale of disposable vapes which applies to all single-use or disposable vapes regardless of whether they contain nicotine. It means that businesses can no longer sell either online or in-store. Speaking about the issue, Councillor Christina Cannon, convenor for education and early years, said: 'Between 2018 and 2022, the percentage of 15-year-olds reporting vape use in the past 30 days jumped from 7% to 25%. 'This increase is closely linked to the rise of disposable vapes and the impact of the Covid pandemic. Alarmingly, the use of disposable vapes among 11 to 17-year-olds in Great Britain has surged from 7.8% in 2020 to 69% in 2023. 'Nicotine use at a young age can negatively affect brain development impacting learning, mood, concentration and self control. It also increases the risk of long-term addiction. 'In response, Glasgow's education services are working closely with the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) and NHS health improvement to deliver targeted education across all of our schools. 'We recognise that schools can't tackle this issue alone and we remain committed to working with key partners to develop a coordinated and effective response.' She said: 'Would the convenor agree that there should be a focus on the Scottish Parliament to look into this in a similar way that the UK government has done with their tobacco and vape bills as a priority.' Councillor Cannon advised that she was committed to working with all partners and both governments to try and tackle the issue. She added: 'This is something that young people have raised with me directly in my visits to schools. Our young people are really keen on taking a lead on how we best communicate with them on how to quit vaping. 'I am more than committed to working with various partners, both governments and the young people to help them take this leadership in their schools as well.' Questions were then asked as to what steps were being taken to protect young people in schools who were not vaping but being subjected to vaping. Councillor Jill Brown said: 'We have examples of where young people are vaping in bathrooms which often don't have a huge amount of ventilation in them, then other children and young people who don't vape are having to go into those environments.' Councillor Cannon responded: 'I think the support has to go towards the young people who are vaping. I am aware of the toilet issue as well and our head teachers are very well aware of that. 'It's about finding the balanced approach of not punishing a whole school for a small number of pupils undertaking vaping particularly indoors and within the school building as well. 'I am happy to work with you to see what individual approach we can tailor to each school.'

MSP vows to continue campaign for brain tumour cure after leaving Holyrood
Beatrice Wishart has been a supporter of the charity Brain Tumour Research since her daughter Louise Fraser, now 47, was diagnosed in 2012. The Liberal Democrat MSP for the Shetland Islands will step down from frontline politics at the 2026 Holyrood election. But the 69-year-old said that will not stop her from continuing to push for more research into brain tumours. 'Louise had suffered with debilitating migraines for many years, so we were used to the phone calls and knew the routine – help with the children, keep things quiet, and let her rest in a dark room,' Ms Wishart said. 'But on New Year's Day (2012) she became seriously unwell. When I went to check on her, she wasn't speaking properly and I honestly thought she'd had a stroke. It was terrifying. 'Due to staff shortages and as there wasn't an MRI scanner in Shetland at the time, it took a few days before she was flown to Aberdeen. 'That's when we were told it was a brain tumour. Your whole world falls apart when you hear those words, especially when it's your child. 'I remember being told it was low-grade and slow-growing, but the diagnosis still knocked the wind out of me. 'In that moment, everything changed. 'Once I had a better understanding of Louise's treatment, I wanted to know more about the prevalence of brain tumours and that led to wanting to do something to raise awareness for more research, ultimately leading to better support and early diagnoses for other families going through the same fear and uncertainty.' Ms Fraser underwent surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and her tumour is now stable and monitored regularly. Brain Tumour Research said tumours can impact people of any age, and kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer. But just 1% of the national spend on cancer goes to brain tumour research, it said. Ms Wishart has campaigned for more money to fund brain tumour research and ensure people can receive an earlier diagnosis. The MSP helped set up Holyrood's Cross-Party Group on Brain Tumours and has supported the launch of the Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence, which Brain Tumour Research described as a 'game-changing' collaboration with the Beatson Cancer Charity. Following the death of Ms Fraser's husband Kris from a brain haemorrhage in 2024, Ms Wishart continued to increase her support for the charity. The Liberal Democrat has helped raise thousands of pounds through various events in memory of Mr Fraser and in ongoing support of her daughter. As she prepares to leave the Scottish Parliament next year, Ms Wishart pledged to continue to fight for those with brain tumours. She said: 'Just because I'm stepping back from Parliament doesn't mean I'll stop fighting for this cause. 'Brain tumours have had a profound impact on my family, and I know we are not alone. I will keep speaking up, sharing our story, and doing whatever I can to push for change. 'I'm proud of what was started in the Scottish Parliament, and know the Cross-Party Group will continue to carry that work forward. Only together will we find a cure for this devastating disease.'
