Govt open to factual criticisms of taxation system, says Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: The government is ready to accept any criticism of the taxation system as long as it is based on facts, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said criticisms should be conveyed through the proper channels and not take the form of slander or verbal abuse.
"I noticed some university students complaining about the electricity bill adjustment. I don't understand. Electricity rates have not gone up, so is it true they are affected?
"If it's true, then we need to fix it because public universities are exempted," he said in his speech at a gathering with Prime Minister's Department staff here on Monday (June 30).
"Such matters, when spread in the name of freedom, can become avenues for slander and verbal abuse.
"So ... brothers, sisters, younger friends or children, please provide facts. I have no issue with people complaining or offering criticism,' he said.
Anwar added that the adjustment of electricity tariffs and the expansion of the sales and service tax (SST) scope are to ensure that those with higher financial means contribute a fairer share, while protecting segments of the population from undue financial pressure.
"If possible, we don't want to burden the people with taxes. But if there are one or two cases where people are affected, we can make improvements.
"However, to outright oppose the electricity (tariff) adjustment – I think that's not right,' he said.
On June 9, the government announced a targeted review of the sales tax rate and the expansion of the service tax scope, which will take effect on Tuesday (July 1).
On June 13, the Energy Commission announced that more than 23.6 million domestic users in Peninsular Malaysia will benefit from a fairer and more progressive electricity tariff structure, which has been approved by the government and will be in effect from Tuesday until Dec 31, 2027. – Bernama

Meanwhile, Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Edmund Bon Tai Soon, urged ASEAN to move beyond fragmented national efforts and adopt a shared regional framework that holds both governments and businesses accountable to clear and consistent gender rights standards. 'Having a legal framework is very crucial. We are a diverse region, but we must develop a framework, especially now that Malaysia has led the adoption of the new ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which commits to uplifting and protecting the rights of women and children,' he said. Bon also emphasised that beyond policies and laws, genuine progress requires strong political will and commitment from ASEAN leaders.

BUSINESS KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's pharmaceutical industry is emerging as a driver of high-value investment, skilled employment, and healthcare resilience, driven by regulatory and productivity reforms implemented in recent years, according to the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC). MPC said these efforts have also supported Malaysia's climb to 23rd place in the 2025 International Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Ranking, the country's highest position in over a decade. 'Under the MPC, the Pharmaceutical Productivity Nexus (PPN) has driven structural changes that translate directly into economic value by streamlining product registration processes, aligning technical requirements across agencies, and reducing regulatory bottlenecks,' it said in a statement today. According to the MPC, two new pharmaceutical facilities have progressed to the development stage, unlocking investments and creating skilled employment opportunities, while two additional facilities are moving forward more rapidly under the streamlined processes. MPC director general Datuk Zahid Ismail said the sector's transformation provides a blueprint for national economic renewal. 'Every bottleneck removed is an opportunity unlocked, whether it's faster factory approvals, increased export readiness, or local production of critical medicines,' he added. The president of the Malaysian Organisation of Pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI) and PPN representative, Ch'ng Kien Peng, said the pharmaceutical sector's gains reflect what is possible when productivity reforms are targeted, data-driven, and collaborative. 'These wins go beyond industry metrics. They mean better access to affordable medicines, more quality jobs for Malaysians, and increased resilience in our healthcare supply chain,' he said. The MPC also stated that the sector's progress aligns with the objectives of the 12th Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030, and the National Energy Transition Roadmap by supporting economic growth and localised production of essential medicines while integrating environmental sustainability practices in facility operations. PM Anwar uses chartered flight for three-nation visit to save time and costs
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will begin a three-nation official visit tomorrow, travelling via a chartered Malaysia Airlines flight to Rome, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro until July 7. The decision aims to optimise time, reduce costs, and streamline delegation coordination. Tunku Nashrul Tunku Abaidah, the Prime Minister's senior press secretary, explained that the chartered flight was chosen to avoid lengthy transits and ensure smooth scheduling. 'This allows the Prime Minister's packed itinerary to proceed efficiently without delays,' he said during the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) briefing. The government will cover expenses for official delegates, while business representatives will pay their own costs.
