Ex-Ohio State football player Kirk Barton charged after fatal car wreck leaves 1 person dead
Dublin Police said Barton, 40, is suspected of driving his pickup "at a high rate of speed" in Historic Dublin just before 3 a.m. Saturday when he struck a Lexus driven by Ethan Wence Perry.
Perry died at the crash site, and Barton was transported to a hospital with "non-life-threatening" injuries.
The Columbus Dispatch reported that Barton was driving on the wrong side of the road before correcting himself before the crash. According to the report, the former Buckeyes player admitted to drinking alcohol before driving and had a "blank stare" and glassy eyes when police arrived.
Dublin Police said Barton was charged with one count of aggravated vehicular homicide.
Barton appeared in court Monday and was released on a $500,000 cash surety bond, FOX 8 reported. He was ordered not to leave the area and not to drive. He is due back in court next month.
Barton played right tackle for the Buckeyes from 2003 to 2007 and was an All-American in his final season. He was later drafted by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL Draft.
Barton had brief stints with several other NFL teams.

Woman, 25, dies after collision with Halawa red-light runner
A 25-year-old woman died following a head-on collision late this morning in the Halawa area, Honolulu police said. The crash occurred at about 10 :57 a.m. at the intersection of Kahuapaani Street and Mananai Place and marks the 41st traffic fatality on Oahu this year. At the same time last year, there had been 16. According to the Honolulu Police Department's Traffic Division's Vehicular Homicide Section, a 40-year-old man was driving north on Kahuapaani Street with a 34-year-old male passenger when he ran a red light and attempted a left turn onto Mananai Place. During the turn, the vehicle was broadsided by a car heading south on Kahuapaani Street, driven by a 22-year-old woman. A 25-year-old woman was a passenger in her car. The 25-year-old woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died. The 22-year-old driver was hospitalized in good condition. The 40-year-old male driver of the turning vehicle was also taken to an area hospital in good condition, while his passenger refused treatment at the scene. Police said speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash. It is not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The investigation is ongoing.
