Daily Maverick2 days ago

The South African Breweries (SAB) and the South African Rugby Union (SA Rugby) today announced the conclusion of a landmark long-term Event Partnership Agreement which sees SAB become the official and exclusive event delivery partner for all SA Rugby events.
This partnership means that SAB will work closely with SA Rugby to plan and deliver all Springbok Test Matches hosted on home soil, from in-stadium activations to fan experiences outside of the stadium. Through this collaboration, SAB and SA Rugby aim to broaden access to rugby, bringing the spirit and excitement of rugby to more South Africans.
Commenting on the partnership, SAB CEO Richard Rivett-Carnac said, 'Beer and sports have always been synonymous with each other. Being a delivery events partner for SA Rugby will give much needed access to rugby games across the nation, showcasing our long-term commitment to sports. This milestone underscores our commitment to national pride and access to world-class rugby for all South Africans'.
SAB will bring to life these events through its heritage brand Castle Lager – whose purpose has always been deeply rooted in our nation's sporting culture.
The agreement is for an initial five-year term and will see SAB activate platforms such as, Castle Lager Boktown across the country to give access to the rugby experience to all South Africans. The Castle Lager Boktown platform will elevate the fan experiences, bringing South Africans together and amplify national pride.
Commenting on the partnership, Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, said: 'We are delighted to broaden and deepen our relationship with SAB and Castle Lager. 'We have been partners for more than four decades and this arrangement takes us to the next level. It allows us to tap into SAB's event delivery experience to enhance the match-day experience for fans as well as reviving a communal experience for national team fans. 'The new Castle Lager Boktown will allow fans to taste the Test match vibe at the best seats NOT in the stadium and bring fans ever close to the game day experience.'
Springboks Elrigh Louw, Ruan Nortje and Morne van den Berg were in attendance to champion this partnership when the agreement was unveiled at the SAB Headquarters on Friday. From celebrated Springbok players and coaches to local personalities, these figures will bring the Castle Lager Boktown to life and deepen fan connections.
'We are celebrating more than a sponsorship; we are celebrating a shared national spirit.' said Mr Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture. 'The enduring relationship between Castle Lager and the South African Rugby Union reflects the kind of long-term, purposeful partnerships our sporting codes need. This commitment is a vote of confidence in our athletes, in our fans and the role that sport plays in unity, pride and social upliftment – the kind of partnerships that are based on consistency and a genuine passion for the game and our nation. It shows us what's possible when corporate and cultural leadership align.'
The announcement event, attended by the Ministry of Sport, Arts, and Culture, SA Rugby executives, and senior SAB leadership, signalled a renewed call for inclusivity, legacy building and a future where everyone has access to sport. As SAB continues to commemorate its 130-year journey of commitment to South Africa, this partnership reinforces this commitment to building the nation. DM

Teenage wonder boy Pretorius puts Proteas in charge with stunning 153

Lhuan-dre Pretorius showed why Shukri Conrad described him as a 'special' talent, becoming the seventh South African to score a hundred on his Test debut in Bulawayo on Saturday. In the process the 19 year old, also became the youngest South African to score a Test century, surpassing the previous record, held by the legendary Graeme Pollock, which he set it against Australia in 1964. Pretorius scored 153 off only 160 balls, rescuing the Proteas from a precarious position of 22/3 when he arrived at the crease. At stumps, the holders of the World Test Championship mace were 418/9, with Corbin Bosch completing his maiden Test hundred in the last over of the day. It was a remarkable turnaround by the South Africans whose stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj chose to bat, on a pitch he felt would help the seamers early before settling down later in the day. Maharaj was right, but he would not have anticipated how much his top order would struggle against high quality seam bowling from Blessing Muzarabani and Tanaka Chivanga. The latter picked up the first three wickets to fall, all caught in the slips, all of those dismissals the result of extra bounce Chivanga was able to extract with the new ball. Pretorius got his innings going with a straight six off the fourth ball he faced followed by a boundary that he thrashed through the covers off left-arm spinner Wellington Masakdaza and began changing the impetus of the innings with his aggressive approach. A mix up with Wiaan Mulder, saw SA lose a fourth wicket before lunch, but after the interval Pretorius and his Titans teammate Dewald Brevis, who like Pretorius was making his debut, dominated.

Pretorius' history-making 153 helps SA finish strong on day one vs Zim

The Proteas finished day one on 418–9 thanks to Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who became the youngest South African to score a Test century on debut. Picture: Richard Huggard/Gallo Images Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius announced himself on the world stage in emphatic style, becoming just the sixth South African to score a century on his Test debut – and the youngest to do so. Coming in at 23/3, the 19-year-old smashed 153 runs off 160 balls to salvage a South African innings teetering on the brink of ruin on day one of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Saturday. Pretorius formed an attacking partnership with fellow debutant Dewald Brevis (51 off 41 balls). Together, they added 95 runs to stabilise the South Africans. Follwing the exit of Brevis and Verreynne (10), Pretorius formed a partnership of 108 with Corbin Bosch before he skied a pull shot and was caught off the bowling of Tanaka Chivanga. Chivanga was by far the most successful bowler for Zimbabwe, finishing with four wickets for 83 runs. Still, another century from Bosch (100 not out) saw the South Africans finish on 418–9 to carry momentum into day two on Sunday. Pretorius shines for Proteas Zimbabwe had a perfect start, Chivanga taking the wickets of Tony de Zorzi (0), Matthew Breetze (13) and David Bedingham (0) while Wiaan Mulder (17) was run out to leave South Africa capitulating at 55–4. In contrast to his senior teammates, Pretorius was cool and composed, middling just about every lusty blow as he struck 11 fours and four sixes. He maintained his strike rate by running ones, twos and threes between boundaries. Credit must also go to Brevis for his half-century at a strike rate of 124. He targeted boundaries more than Pretorius, hitting three fours and four sixes to stun the Zimbabwe bowling attack. This is South Africa's first tour of Zimbabwe since 2014. While Zimbabwe had a breakthrough Test win over Bangladesh in April, it was just one Test win out of three in the last 10 years (others vs Afghanistan in 2021 and Bangladesh in 2018). Zimbabwe have never beaten South Africa in a Test match.

Mr Price celebrates 40 years of growth, with ambitious plans for the future

'This year marks 40 years since the opening of the first Mr Price store, and as we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on a journey driven by a bold vision: to make fashion accessible to all South Africans,' said Mark Blair, the CEO of Mr Price, in the retailer's annual report released on Friday. Since those early days, Mr Price has grown to 3,030 stores, generated over R40 billion in revenue, achieved a market capitalisation of R65 billion, and reached an operating profit nearing R6 billion. Blair emphasized that the core principles established at the company's inception—low-cost operations, bulk purchasing, minimal markups, and cash-based retailing—continue to underpin its business model. 'These fundamentals have allowed us to consistently deliver high-quality fashion at affordable prices, fueling our growth and resilience over the decades,' he noted. Looking ahead to the first quarter of the 2025 financial year, Blair highlighted the ongoing challenges within South Africa's constrained economy. However, after the national elections and the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU), consumer confidence surged, creating a more favorable environment for retail during the latter half of 2024. Despite challenges posed by the global economy and domestic concerns over the stability of the GNU - along with uncertainty surrounding the national budget and potential VAT hikes - Mr Price made significant gains. The retailer increased its market share by 50 basis points (bps) according to the Retailers' Liaison Committee (excluding Studio 88 and Mr Price Sport), 120 bps per Stats SA (including all divisions), and 40 bps in telecoms, based on GfK data. Gross margin rose by 80 bps in both merchandise and cellular segments. Operating profit grew by 8.9%, with each of the company's three main sectors contributing meaningfully. Blair also noted that the three businesses acquired in recent years achieved a combined operating profit of R1.2 billion, a testament to Mr Price's disciplined approach to acquisitions. 'We are selective in our acquisitions, ensuring they align with our stringent investment criteria and support our long-term growth goals,' Blair explained. However, Blair expressed regret that the company didn't meet its stock turn target due to unpredictable supply chain disruptions, particularly from shipping delays and Durban Port challenges. On a positive note, stock arrivals were earlier than expected, signaling improvements in the supply chain. 'This suggests that our adjustments to buffer supply chain lead times are beginning to show results,' he added. Looking to the future, Blair remains optimistic that market volatility will stabilise. With falling interest rates and a focus on economic growth and employment from the GNU, he expects consumer spending to recover. In April and May of the new financial year, sales were up 11.6%, setting a strong tone for 2026. Mr Price's recent investments and capital allocation decisions have positioned the group for success, even as the retail landscape improves. In the past year, the company invested R830 million, opening 184 new stores, which have already exceeded return expectations. Looking ahead, Mr Price plans to increase capital expenditure to R1.6 billion in 2026 - the highest in its history. This will include the opening of 200 new stores, further investments in store expansions and technology, and the development of a new Gauteng distribution center slated to go live by September 2026. 'Our vision remains ambitious, and every investment we make is aimed at delivering long-term earnings growth and advancing our group's strategic goals,' Blair stated. 'Our Apex strategy team is working diligently to identify and evaluate opportunities that align with this vision, and we will share our plans with the market at the appropriate time.'
