Huge 80s boyband star now mastermind behind some of today's biggest hits

Daily Record2 days ago

Some of Adele, Cline Dion and P!nk's biggest hits are down to this one 80's boy band pop star after his career take a drastic turn three decades ago
Once a teen heartthrob in one of the original British boy bands, Eg White from Brother Beyond has quietly become one of the masterminds behind some of the biggest pop hits of recent times.
While his face no longer be front and centre some of the biggest pop hits his lyrics are still woven into songs from the links of Adele, Celine Dion and James Blunt.

Winding the clock back more than three decades ago to the late 1980s, Brother Beyond released classic catchy pop songs with plenty of quintessentially 80s synth.

The band was first created in 1985 and was quick to release a selection of singles including some of their classic songs, Should Have Lied, How Many Times, Chain-Gang Smile and Can You Keep a Secret?.
Although some of their first songs managed to hit the charts, it wasn't quite the instant success they were looking for. However their first album Get Even, proved to be the hit they were looking for, with The Harder I Try reaching number two in the charts and He Ain't No Competition reaching number six.
However, after a more muted response to their second album, Trust, the band lost a lot of their momentum and took a hiatus away from the business before some live shows in the early 2000s.
Despite the rollercoaster success of Brother Beyond, the band's bassist Eg White decided to embark on a very different musical journey.
Eg was the creator of many of the original band's tunes so it seemed only natural to continue his journey into songwriting, penning various songs for some big-name artists.

One of his earliest and most impactful hits came in 2003 when he teamed up with the newly crowned inaugural Pop Idol winner Will Young for the song "Leave Right Now". The song became a smash hit, soaring to number one and is still to this day Young's most streamed song.
But the singer wasn't the only one to gain recognition from the song, as Eg scooped an Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for his work on the song.
In 2008 he teamed up with Adele to create three songs on her first album 19, including one one of her first big hits Chasing Pavements. The two would also pair up two years later to create Take It All which appeared on her follow-up album 21.
A year later he would also create his own record label, Spilt Milk Records where he would work as both a writer and producer.
Over the coming decades, he would cement his place as one of the most in-demand songwriters in the UK picking up credits on several songs by James Blunt, Florence and The Machine, P!nk, Celine Dion and many more.

British rapper branded 'pathetic' after pulling out of gig with minutes to go

Fans of Professor Green were gutted after the rapper proved to be a no-show at Chester 7's concert this weekend. On Saturday, the British chart-topper, who rose to fame in the early 2010s, was due to take to the stage at Winnington Rugby Club, Northwich, Cheshire, as the headline act. The crowd eagerly awaited his arrival ahead of his 9pm slot but was disappointed to be informed of a last-minute switch-up. With just minutes to go, the organiser received a message while standing outside waiting for him – right on 9 o'clock – that he was unwell and unable to perform. The 41-year-old Read All About It hitmaker's absence was later explained by Chester 7 in a social media statement. At 10pm, they wrote: 'Due to unforeseen circumstances, Professor Green is unable to perform at Chester 7s tonight. 'Whilst circumstances such as these are outside of our control, we apologise to all our amazing players. 'Officials and guests, and thank you for making Chester 7s 2025 an amazing experience for everyone.' Fortunately, the night wasn't short on good vibes, as English former rugby union player James Haskell did turn up to deliver a two-hour DJ slot beforehand. The 40-year-old athlete and I'm A Celeb star plays house music and produces his own tunes, having taken his sets all over the world to the likes of London, Dubai, and Ibiza. As for Professor Green, whose real name is Stephen Manderson, he is yet to comment publicly on pulling out of the gig with just moments to spare. However, it left a sour taste in the mouths of many, who admitted they felt let down. Taking to the comments section of his most recent post one day ago, @nicola.b_86 wrote: 'What happened last night?!? You were booked to headline a festival and then just didn't show up? Organisers said at the end of the night you hadn't communicated this to them and just did a no show?' 'Why did you not come to Chester7s?', @tors56 demanded to know. Also making their feeling crystal clear, @kayleigh_x87 commented underneath the announcement: '@professorgreen you massive let down!! 👎 not impressed 😤' Pro Green's cancelled gig comes just a day after he performed at Glastonbury Festival. The Just Be Good to Green musician was brought out as a surprise guest by Native James during his set on the BBC Introducing stage. Following some of his own hits, he introduced Green for a cameo, the UK hip hop veteran popping up for the duo's recent collab, Block. In fact, it is Green's Worthy Farm appearance that made fans suspicious, as @bexwidd commented on Insta after his absence from Chester 7 was confirmed: 'He stayed at Glastonbury! Very poor @professorgreen'. Agreeing, @splash_vw blasted him as 'pathetic', praising Haskell for still showing up despite the recent death of his father. The Glasto set still went down a treat regardless, as fans were keen to comment on how 'iconic' the moment was. More Trending 'I am so glad I was there to witness this', @vpulverise wrote on Instagram. Green himself commented: 'gassssssssssed ain't the word everyone go stream BLOCK NOWWWWWW … full circle moment – thank you @bbcintroducing and thank you @nativejamesuk@ and gang 🔥' No stranger to Glasto, having performed there several times before, Green hinted that he'll be returning in 2027 after the festival's fallow year. Glastonbury map tool shows festival size against Powys towns

A viral map shows the size of the Glastonbury festival compared to Powys towns – and it dwarfs them all. Social media users have been sharing screenshots of the online Glastonbury Map Overlay tool showing the scale of the iconic music festival in comparison to towns and cities across the UK. The map allows you to move a red patch shaped like Worthy Farm anywhere on the map, and when you put it over your hometown can give non-festival-goers a taste of just how expansive the event is. When overlaid on Welshpool, it shows how the festival's site, estimated to be between 900 and 1,100 acres, dwarfs the town. The same can be said for Newtown, which would cross the bypass, while Builth Wells is swamped by the map, with the site stretching into neighbouring Llanwrtyd Wells. Social media users have been sharing screenshots of how the map looks where they live The festival opened on Wednesday and continues this weekend. More than 200,000 people are expected to descend on the fields of Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset with ticket-holders advised to prepare for mainly warm weather. Headliners this year include British rock/pop band The 1975, veteran singer Neil Young and his band the Chrome Hearts, and US pop star Olivia Rodrigo. Performing in the coveted Sunday tea-time legends slot this year is Sir Rod Stewart, who previously said he will be joined by his former Faces band member Ronnie Wood, as well as some other guests. Other performers include Irish singer CMAT, Prada singer Raye, US musician Brandi Carlile, Nile Rodgers and Chic, hip-hop star Loyle Carner, US pop star Gracie Abrams, indie outfit Wet Leg, Mercury Prize-winning jazz quintet Ezra Collective, US rapper Denzel Curry, and rising star Lola Young. The line-up also features a number of acts listed as TBA, as well as a mysterious act called Patchwork, who will take to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday.
