'Get over the hump': Doug MacLean slams Stuart Skinner for sabotaging Connor McDavid's Stanley Cup dream
The Edmonton Oilers came so close to winning the Stanley Cup this year, but not everyone was happy with how things went. After the final game, one former NHL coach and analyst pointed out a big problem.
His comments focused on the team's goalie, Stuart Skinner, and raised questions about what went wrong behind the scenes.
Doug MacLean
calls out Stuart Skinner for lack of support to
Connor McDavid
Former NHL general manager and coach Doug MacLean discussed the Edmonton Oilers' Stanley Cup Final defeat during a Sportsnet broadcast on June 20, 2025. He stated plainly his viewpoint, saying that goaltender Stuart Skinner did not do enough to back superstar Connor McDavid.
— msports_all (@msports_all)
'It's hard on star players at playoff time to get over the hump,'
MacLean said.
'You need a supporting cast.'
In Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final, conducted on June 18 in Sunrise, Florida, the Oilers lost to the Florida Panthers. Although McDavid had a phenomenal playoff performance with 42 points over 23 games, Skinner was chastised for failing to be dependable in goal.
Although Skinner looked strong sometimes, he also relinquished important objectives at the wrong point. Many fans and analysts believe that his performance made it difficult for McDavid and the rest of the team to stay in control of games.

Stuart Skinner's playoff run under heavy pressure
Stuart Skinner, 25, has been the starting goaltender for the Oilers during their recent playoff runs. This postseason, he had an up-and-down performance. In several games, he was pulled and replaced by backup Calvin Pickard.
Despite the pressure, Skinner stayed calm in interviews. But after Doug MacLean's comments, the focus is now fully on him. MacLean's words reminded fans that even the best players like Connor McDavid can't win alone.
They need help from the back, especially from the goaltender.

Connor McDavid did everything he could, including scoring and assisting in clutch moments. But without steady defense and goaltending, it wasn't enough.
Skinner's save percentage dropped to .893 in the Final, while Florida's goalie Sergei Bobrovsky stood strong with .912.
The Oilers now head into the offseason thinking about changes. Will they trust Skinner again next season? Or will they look for someone new to help McDavid win his first Stanley Cup?

Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Ganguly took to X to praise the young skipper, writing: "An absolute masterclass from Gill... just flawless. One of the best innings I have seen in England in any era. So much improvement in the last few months. Probably opening was not his place in Test cricket." He also surpassed Kohli's 254* as the highest score by an Indian Test captain, and Tendulkar's 241* as the highest by an Indian outside Asia. His knock also eclipsed Sunil Gavaskar's 221 at The Oval as India's top Test score in England. Poll Is No. 4 the ideal batting position for Shubman Gill? Yes, definitely Maybe No, he should open No, he should bat lower India lost the series opener at Headingley despite Gill's 147, but with his masterclass in Birmingham, they are now in pole position to level the series. Free agent Jabari Walker inks two-way deal with Philadelphia 76ers after 188 games with Trail Blazers
Jabari Walker. Image via:The Philadelphia 76ers have added another intriguing young forward to their roster. They have signed free agent Jabari Walker to a two-way contract ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season. The move comes as the team continues to build depth at the power forward position, following the earlier addition of Trendon Watford. Walker, who spent his first three seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, brings a promising mix of youth and NBA experience. The Philadelphia 76ers signed Jabari Walker ESPN's Shams Charania first broke the news, reporting, 'Free agent forward Jabari Walker has agreed to a two-way NBA deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, source tells ESPN. Walker spent his first three NBA seasons in Portland, appearing in 188 games.' Walker, a second-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft out of Colorado, had flashes of promise during his time in Portland. His 2023–24 campaign saw him play a key rotational role, averaging 8.9 points and 7.1 rebounds in 23.6 minutes across 72 games, including 23 starts. However, his playing time dipped this past season following the Blazers' acquisition of Deni Avdija and the emergence of Toumani Camara. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo Despite a reduced role, Walker continued to produce efficiently in 60 games, averaging 5.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game while shooting a career-best 51.5% from the field and 38.9% from beyond the arc. Notably, Walker made the most of his perimeter opportunities, especially from the corners; 45.8% of his three-point attempts came from the corners, where he knocked down 45.5% of his shots. Though the volume was limited, the efficiency stood out. The 22-year-old stands 6-foot-9 and offers positional flexibility, capable of filling in at either forward spot. With his combination of rebounding, spot-up shooting, and size, he fits well into a Sixers roster that continues to prioritize youth and athleticism this offseason.
