McCarthy names provisional TotalEnergies CAF CHAN 2024 Harambee Stars squad
Kenya will co-host the biennial Continental showpiece alongside neighbours Uganda and Tanzania between 02 – 30 August 2025.
Former champions and FKF Premier League's runners up Gor Mahia and Bandari FC have each contributed five players to the squad while Police FC who clinched the league title for the first time ever have four players in the 30-man list.
The Ulinzi Stars duo of Staphod Odhiambo and Yakeen Muteheli will drape in national colours for the first time ever after earning their debut call ups.
Meanwhile, Tusker FC goalkeeper Brian Opondo will train for the first time ever with the national team. He was called up for the last World Cup qualifiers against Gabon and The Gambia, but was not able to join up for camp.
In attack, coach McCarthy has included the top three scorers from the just concluded season, with Moses Shummah (17), Emmanuel Osoro (16) and Ryan Ogam (15) all getting a nod to show their scoring prowess on the Continental stage.
Ogam, who plays for Tusker FC, missed most of the second leg with a knee injury and only returned for the final game of the season, playing 45 minutes. He scored 15 goals in 19 appearances for the Brewers.
McCarthy's team is scheduled to report for camp on 10 July, to begin preparation for their debut in the tournament tailor-made for local based players.
The Harambee Stars have been drawn in Group A alongside DR Congo, Morocco, Angola and Zambia. They kick off their campaign against 2016 Champions DRC on 3 August at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani.

There is nothing to separate them. Morocco and Zambia, the rising stars of African Women's Football, kickoff the TotalEnergies CAF Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 this Saturday at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, at 8:00 p.m. local time. Between shared ambition and extraordinary memories, this much-anticipated fixture sounds as much a revenge platform as it does a declaration of intent. Two Parallel Paths Their progress follows an almost symmetrical tempo. Semi-finalists at the WAFCON 2022, World Cup participants the following year, the two teams embody this new generation that is shaking up the established order. On paper, nothing really separates them. On the pitch, however, recent history has left its mark. Zambia: From the Shadows to the Light 10 years ago, the Copper Queens played almost anonymously. Today, they arrive in Morocco with a strong and bold team, driven by a golden generation. To guide this ambition, the federation has entrusted the reins to Jorge Vilda, recently crowned World Champion with Spain. "Playing a WAFCON at home is enormous pressure. My role is to transform this pressure into energy. We want the Moroccan fans to be proud of a team that is committed, liberated, and true to its values," explains the Spanish coach. The weight of memories, the urgency of the present "It is true that by now, we know each other well," acknowledges Chebbak. And this alone adds spice to a confrontation already laden with symbolism. This Morocco-Zambia match is not just an opening fixture; it is a test of ambition, character and maturity. On the Zambian side, suspicion reigns. This game is unprecedented in the WAFCON, but recent history lends further depth to this encounter. "We have enormous respect for this Moroccan team, which is playing on home soil, making them a formidable opponent," notes Häuptle. "But we have our own ambitions. Every match of this WAFCON will be a battle. Our Olympic qualification is not the end; it is a foundation on which to build. We want to show that Zambia is here to stay." Between a Moroccan team driven by the need to excel at home, and a Zambian team driven by a desire to conquer, the duel promises to be an electric start to the tournament. Al Hilal showed Saudi league not just about money: Koulibaly
Simone Inzaghi's team beat Manchester City 4-3 in the round-of-16, delivering the biggest upset of the tournament and one of the competition's most thrilling games. Al Hilal began their campaign with a draw against Spanish giants Real Madrid and they came through the group stage unbeaten with a draw against Champions League regulars Salzburg and a 2-0 win over six-times CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Pachuca of Mexico. With a squad that mixes local Saudi talent with international recruits, the newly appointed Inzaghi was able to take the team to the brink of the last four. For former Napoli defender and Senegal international Kalidou Koulibaly, one of the expensively recruited foreign players, the performances at the first 32-team Club World Cup, were a message that the Saudi league is not just a lucrative retirement home for European and South American players. "We showed that the teams from Saudi are very strong, very powerful and we have a lot of good players. Everyone thinks that when we went there we only went for the financial argument but we showed that we are working over there," he told reporters. "We showed it at this World Cup and every team who played against us can see that we have talent. We want to improve the league, we have improved a lot in two years," he added. Koulibaly was one of the early recruits to the Saudi Pro League, after leaving Premier League team Chelsea to join the Riyadh club and he said he has witnessed rapid growth in the league. "I was there at the beginning and I see today it is very tough. We saw it last year and next year it will be tougher as more players are coming. The Saudi league is taking a nice place in the football world and we are happy because we are part of a very nice project and want to show all the world that the football is improving," he said. Inzaghi, who left Inter Milan and took charge of the team shortly before the tournament began, says he has been impressed with what he has seen from his players so far. "Clearly, for me and my staff, it was very important to be able to play in this World Cup. We realised what kind of team we have, the quality of our players, the pleasure with which they work every day. Now we are looking forward to a great season," he said.
