Joe Mazzulla is not on the hot seat with the Boston Celtics

USA Today17 hours ago

Soon after the Boston Celtics fell to the New York Knicks in the 2025 NBA Eastern Conference Semifinals, there had been some speculation that Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla might be on the hot seat given the unexpected nature of the early postseason exit, even considering the Achilles tendon injury to star forward Jayson Tatum.
But speaking to the media after the first round of the 2025 NBA draft on June 25, Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens opened up about how the team sees Mazzulla's future with the team, revealing a key tidbit about the Celtics coach's contract status with the franchise in the process when asked about his future with the team.
"I keep any of those discussions in house," said Stevens via CLNS Media. "But we've got Joe under contract for multiple years right now. So, we certainly want Joe to be around here for a long time."
The last news we had about the Boston head coach's contract was when ESPN's Tim Bontemps revealed he'd been given a three-year extension in 2023, meaning his current deal was potentially ending soon without the extension of unknown duration he's evidently been granted since.
And even in light of some missteps along the way, Mazzulla has led Boston to to a pair of NBA finals appearances -- winning a title in 2024 in one of them -- and two 60-win seasons in a row. Not a bad resume, when you put things into context, frankly.

NBA Free-Agent Big Board: The market is starting to take shape

The NBA free-agency negotiating window opens at 6 p.m. ET Monday, and while this class is a little lackluster, there could still potentially be some impact players on the market. Here you'll find our list of the top 25 overall possible free agents, which bakes in contractual expectations — meaning value for the money — potential for younger players, risk of decline for older players, a premium on long-range shooters (hey, teams want them!) and injury history. To use an example, you'll find both Khris Middleton and Malcolm Brogdon in the 20s, primarily due to their general lack of availability in recent years. Had they played more, they would have been higher on the list. Without further ado, let's get to it. Report: Knicks Expected to Make Major Free Agency Signing

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Heading into NBA free agency, the New York Knicks still don't know who their head coach will be. Mike Brown has become a legitimate candidate for the job and has had a second interview with the team, but there are still a lot of questions left to be answered. Despite not having a head coach, the Knicks need to make some moves. After losing to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals, it became clear that New York needs more quality depth. A new report has suggested that the team has found a quality piece to add to its puzzle. Jordan Clarkson #00 of the Utah Jazz drives into Gary Trent Jr. #33 of the Toronto Raptors during the first half of a game at Delta Center on January 12, 2024 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Read more: Report: Knicks Prepared to Pursue Russell Westbrook in NBA Free Agency According to a report from ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, that is the expectation between Clarkson and New York. "Jordan Clarkson is expected to sign with the New York Knicks after he clears free agency waivers, sources tell ESPN," Charania wrote on X. Clarkson will be an excellent bench addition for the Knicks. He's known for being a lethal three-point shooter and scorer when he's on, although he can be streaky. In recent years under former head coach Tom Thibodeau, New York has been known to lean very heavily on its starting lineup. The bench has not been a key for the Knicks. That seems likely to change under new leadership. Adding a player like Clarkson will help with adding a scoring punch in the second unit. During the 2024-25 NBA season with the Jazz, Clarkson appeared in 37 games and made nine starts. He averaged 16.2 points, 3.7 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. Read more: Bulls Make $24 Million Move to Kick Off NBA Free Agency Back in the 2023-24 season, he played in 55 games and made 19 starts. In that campaign, he averaged 17.1 points per game to go along with five assists and 3.4 rebounds. While a deal cannot be agreed to until he clears waivers, this is a move that will happen. New York is getting a quality scorer to lead the second unit. It could end up being a major steal, although the financial side of the deal has not been revealed yet. Expect to see the Knicks remain active this offseason. Clarkson is a good start, but another piece or two seems likely to be added. Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 16 - Al Attles (1960-71)

The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history. Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the ninth of nine players who wore the No. 16 jersey for the Warriors. That player would be Hall of Fame Golden State guard alum Al Attles. After ending his college career at North Carolina A&T, Attles was picked up with the 39th overall selection of the 1960 NBA draft by the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors. The Newark, New Jersey native played all 11 seasons of his pro career with the Dubs, retiring from the league afterward. During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Attles wore only jersey No. 16 and put up 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and as many assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.
