Abdullah Ang, inmate who had water bed in Kajang Prison, has died
Better known as Abdullah Ang, 79, he breathed his last on Wednesday (May 28) after a long illness.
Ang, who was sentenced to eight years' jail and fined RM100,000 in 1986 for criminal breach of trust involving over RM338,000, was embroiled in another scandal just three years later during incarceration when an English-language daily revealed he was receiving special treatment in Kajang prison.
It was reported that unbefitting for a prisoner, Ang's cell Was furnished with a carpet, refrigerator, TV, video player and a water bed.
The newspaper also revealed that investigations revealed Ang, who was said to be close to the then-prime minister Tun Mahathir Mohamed, also frequently left prison grounds to manage his business in Kuala Lumpur.
This triggered public uproar over preferential treatment for wealthy or well-connected inmates.
Soon after, several prison officials faced inquiries and a shake-up of the Prisons Department followed.
Ang's former legal adviser, Selva Sugumaran, who worked for Ang for over 25 years, told The Star that the businessman had been unwell for eight years and was frequently hospitalised.
He said Ang had ventured into business soon after his release from prison and ran a latex glove manufacturing company.
Selva, 64, said he and Ang stayed in touch over the years until his demise on Wednesday.
Ang's funeral is scheduled for this coming Monday (June 2) in Kuala Lumpur.

Earlier, Muhammad Nadzir and Nur Haziqah urged the court to impose a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to the public. Samantha, however, pleaded for leniency, requesting the minimum fine as her clients had repented and promised to change. "Mohd Hanafi suffers from a brain condition and underwent head surgery in 2016. He is now dependent on his sister for support. "Muhammad Al Azamuddin is a first-year university student, while Mohamad Syahmi Firas is a final-year polytechnic student. "They have all promised not to repeat this offence. Their families have also vowed to guide them onto the right path from now on," she said. Failure to pay the fine will result in a six-month jail term. It was previously reported that police raided a gathering at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin, believed to have been attended by nearly 100 men. The raid, conducted based on intelligence and public information, led to the arrest of 20 men and the seizure of hundreds of condoms and HIV medication.

MACC probes two more firms in data centre graft scandal
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has uncovered two additional companies suspected of securing data centre construction projects through bribery. The case involves a detained project manager from a prominent construction firm who allegedly demanded kickbacks in exchange for tender advantages. A source revealed that several company directors have been identified and will be called in for questioning. 'The main suspect admitted to requesting around three per cent of the project value from companies seeking contracts,' the source said. The bribes were facilitated by leaking tender details and ensuring priority for paying firms. Payments were made in stages, aligned with project milestones. 'Several million ringgit remain unpaid as per the agreement,' the source added. Earlier reports disclosed that the project manager attempted to destroy nearly RM1 million in cash during an MACC raid under Op Ways.
