Komal Sharma, incharge of Apni Mandi, Punjab Mandi Board, in Chandigarh, said, 'The production of Punjab-grown tomatoes gets adversely affected due to increase in temperature and untimely rains. Generally, our local production stops by mid-July. When this happens, we import tomatoes from the hills. But due to incessant rains and landslides in Himachal, the supply has taken a hit, leading to a steep spike in rates.'
She added that the rates are changing every day but it might drop to ₹50 to ₹60 per kg once the weather clears up. 'If the rains continue, we may see erratic supply from other states too,' Sharma added.
Last year, tomato prices had reached ₹120 per kg at apni mandis. But the highest-ever was seen in 2023 when tomatoes were selling for ₹250 per kg during the flashfloods in Himachal.
While the rates of staples such as potatoes and onions have remained unchanged, the rates of capsicum and brinjal, which are sourced from the hills, have also seen a spike (see box).

Integration of metro and suburban stations on rlys' agenda
Mumbai: With at least four new metro rail lines slated to open partially by the end of the year, top officials from the Indian Railways will hold a joint meeting on Monday to discuss ways of integrating suburban railway stations with the metro and other major modes of transport. The meeting will focus on measures to ensure multi modal integration (MMI), especially at railway stations that merge with the metro network, and aim to bypass the problems encountered at stations like Andheri and Ghatkopar which currently have interchange facilities, top railway officials told Hindustan Times. A crowded Ghatkopar station which connects to the metro station (Satish Bate/HT PHOTO) Monday's meeting, to be chaired by Satish Kumar, chairman and chief executive officer of the Railway Board, will be held at the Central Railway's headquarters at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). It will be attended by officers from the Central Railway, Western Railway, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation, Rail Land Development Authority and Dedicated Freight Corridor. 'The thrust will be on MMI,' a senior railway official said about the upcoming meeting, on condition of anonymity. 'Advance planning and redesigning is required for railway stations that will merge with the metro network, else we may see a repeat of the chaos witnessed at Ghatkopar and Andheri stations due to unplanned connectivity.' Among the four metro lines that are slated to be operational by year-end, line 2B will merge with railway stations at Bandra, Kurla and Mankhurd, line 4 will merge with the Kanjurmarg and Kurla railway stations, line 5 will merge with Kalyan, while line 6 will merge with Jogeshwari and Kanjurmarg stations. Elevated decks measuring 6.43 lakh square feet – the equivalent of nearly six Azad Maidans – are being constructed over all suburban stations on the Western and Central Railways networks at a cost of ₹947 crore. These decks will decongest overcrowded stations by accommodating ticket counters, toilets, food stalls and commercial spaces, apart from providing connectivity with metro stations where they merge with the suburban network. On Saturday, Satish Kumar and other rail officials inspected the elevated deck at Khar station, which measures more than 5,000 square meters, and is connected to Bandra Terminus via a skywalk, which is an important component of MMI, said officials. 'The inspection helped us understand the possibility of adopting similar measures at other stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Development Scheme,' said a Western Railway official. The findings are likely to be discussed during Monday's meeting, which will feature a handful of powerpoint presentations, the official said. 'We will be discussing travel patterns at railway stations, including current footfall, availability of interchange with the metro and circumstances outside stations,' said another official. 'We need to understand the potential surge in footfall when two mass transit systems intersect.' Apart from integrating railway and metro stations, MMI will feature wide footpaths outside stations, pedestrian crossings, signages and designated parking bays for buses, autos, cars, and aggregators cabs. These facilities will be located within a 500-metre radius of metro stations, said officials.

Environment minister to visit e-waste park in Norway to note best practices
Delhi environment and industries minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa arrived in Oslo on Sunday to study electronic waste (e-waste) management systems, ahead of the city's plan to develop an e-waste park in Holambi Kalan. The visit, facilitated in coordination with the Norwegian government, will take place on Monday. 'We will also visit an industrial area, in the middle of the city, to again study the best practices, ranging from waste management there to ensuring recycling and zero air pollution,' Sirsa told HT. The Delhi government is planning to build a dedicated e-waste park over 11.4 acres in north Delhi, aimed at processing over 51,000 metric tonnes of e-waste annually. A feasibility study for the ₹150 crore project will be undertaken soon, following which a global RFQ-cum-RFP (Request for Qualification-cum-Request for Proposal) will be floated. 'This is a short visit to understand how Norway is managing its e-waste. We want Delhi's e-waste park to generate zero pollution. Previous governments didn't plan for the present or the future, and that is why we have waste mountains. We don't want to repeat those mistakes,' Sirsa said. He added that the Delhi government is also studying Hong Kong's e-waste management model. 'We are examining both Norway and Hong Kong to get a sense of the advanced machines and technologies we can use for the project,' Sirsa said. He is expected to return to Delhi on Tuesday. The Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC) is the nodal agency for the project. Sirsa, who has been accompanied by DSIIDC officials on the trip, had earlier announced that a third-party feasibility study would evaluate global models with a focus on zero-emission and zero-landfill systems. Other features under consideration include scientific dismantling protocols, metal recovery systems, digital waste tracking, air quality monitoring, and pollution control mechanisms. The park is expected to generate over ₹350 crore in economic output, according to government estimates. Once awarded, the construction of the facility will take 18 months to complete, officials have said.

Regarding the railway ticket booking centre, he said it will be provided in the city. The authorities are looking for locations, he added. He brought to the attention of the MP the issue of there being no ESI Hospital in Kodagu district, which has a large number of workers. Yaduveer said that the survey work of the railway connection routes to the district was completed and the necessary 'land acquisition' process should be done for the implementation of the project. The delay in this work by the state govt is the reason why the railway project is not being implemented on time. Similarly, necessary talks will be held with the centre's civil aviation minister for the establishment of an airport in the district, he said.
