SMJ Energy explains non-participation in Mutiara Cluster bid

Published on: Wednesday, July 09, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 09, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: SMJ Energy, in a statement on Wednesday, has clarified that its decision not to participate in the Mutiara Cluster bid aligns with its strategic approach to prudent oil and gas investments. The company said its priority remains securing greater revenue sharing and decision-making power in Sabah's oil and gas sector through the Commercial Collaboration Agreement (CCA) with Petronas. Since its establishment, SMJ Energy has grown to a company valued at RM5 billion, with equity in profitable producing assets generating strong cashflows. These include a 50 per cent stake in the Samarang PSC, 10 per cent in LNG9, and 25 per cent in the Samur petrochemical plant. Within less than three years, the young company has declared RM160 million in dividends, reflecting its focus on returns. SMJ Energy noted that exploration in the oil and gas sector carries high financial risks, with potential losses running into the hundreds of millions. To minimise such exposure, SMJ Energy focuses on acquiring producing assets operated by reputable firms with strong ESG records. For exploration prospects, the company secures free carry or back-in rights, allowing it to participate only after successful discoveries. It currently holds such rights in SB409, SB403, SB306A and SB306B, with shares ranging from 7.5 per cent to 20 per cent. The Mutiara Cluster, being a Discovered Resource Opportunity requiring major investment and appraisal, is not part of SMJ Energy's current priorities. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce hails positive amendments to SST

Published on: Wednesday, July 09, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 09, 2025 Text Size: Yong said the main issue for the business community is legal uncertainty, as unclear provisions and inconsistent interpretations increase costs and erode investor confidence. Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah has welcomed the State Government's move to amend the State Sales Tax (SST) Ordinance, calling it a necessary step to strengthen legal clarity, improve the appeals process, and ensure more consistent enforcement. The amendment, recently tabled in the Sabah State Legislative Assembly, is aimed at removing ambiguities in the law that have led to confusion and uneven application of tax procedures. MCCC Sabah Women Entrepreneurs Committee Vice Chairperson Yong Hui Sun (pic) said the Chamber, under the leadership of President Datuk Dexter Lau, has consistently engaged with the Government to raise industry concerns and support policies that promote fair and competitive business conditions. 'The Chamber agrees with State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun's emphasis on eliminating grey areas in the ordinance,' she said in a statement on Tuesday. Yong said the main issue for the business community is legal uncertainty, as unclear provisions and inconsistent interpretations increase costs and erode investor confidence. 'We fully support the State Government's efforts to set clear rules and appeal channels that protect taxpayer rights and create a more predictable business environment,' she said. Yong added that transparency is especially important for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including women-led businesses, which are often more affected by unclear regulations due to limited resources. She noted that the amendment reflects not only a legal update, but also the government's willingness to engage the business sector in policy-making. 'A clear, enforceable framework gives both authorities and businesses a defined structure to operate within. 'We appreciate Minister Masidi's stance that the law must be 'crystal clear.' This ensures both proper enforcement and clear boundaries for business operators,' she said. She also urged the State to provide proper training to enforcement officers and organise more briefings for the business community once the amendment is passed, to ensure consistent interpretation and application of the law. 'Fair and transparent systems are the foundation for long-term business confidence. 'If the Government and business community move forward together, Sabah is in a strong position to attract sustainable investment,' Yong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? POIC seawater desalination to boost output

Published on: Wednesday, July 09, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 09, 2025 Text Size: Ahmad Naim described the initiative as a dual-purpose solution that addresses both industrial water supply challenges and potential domestic water needs in surrounding areas. Kota Kinabalu: A seawater desalination facility at the Palm Oil Industrial Cluster (POIC) in Lahad Datu is set to increase its production capacity from 500,000 litres to 2.5 million litres per day by August this year. Jetama Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ahmad Naim Uddang said the plant currently produces only 0.5 million litres daily but will undergo a five-fold expansion using innovative technology that processes seawater directly on-site for industrial use. 'This new technology differs from conventional methods that rely on river water sources. It allows immediate treatment,' Ahmad Naim said after a courtesy visit to Head of State Tun Musa Aman on Monday. The company is currently conducting a proof of concept to test the technology's efficiency, with capacity increases planned once the trials prove successful. Ahmad Naim described the initiative as a dual-purpose solution that addresses both industrial water supply challenges and potential domestic water needs in surrounding areas. Meanwhile, Jetama Chairman Datuk Yussof Abdul Manan pointed out the company's expansion into renewable energy through floating solar power projects. The firm operates one solar plant in Labuan, while a second 15-megawatt project in Batu Sapi is finalising its Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). A third project at the Babagon Dam in Penampang will become Sabah's first floating solar facility with a capacity of 13.21 MWac. The PPA for this project is also being finalised and is expected to be sealed this month. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
