Canadian retirees are being told to withdraw this shockingly low amount in 2025 — here's why

Retirees, brace yourselves: The golden rule of retirement withdrawals just got a cold dose of reality. A report from Morningstar recommends the safe withdrawal rate for retirees in 2025 is a mere 3.7% — a significant adjustment from the decades-old 4% rule that had dominated retirement planning.
Amid rising costs, volatile markets and new prospects for inflation, a lower rate could disrupt the way many retirees think about their financial strategies.
If you're wondering what Morningstart's updated benchmark means for your golden years — and whether you'll have enough to sustain a 30-plus-year retirement — it's time to dig deeper into how you can adjust your plan for success.

A safe withdrawal rate is the percentage of your retirement savings you should be able to withdraw annually without risk of your money running out too soon.
For decades, the 4% rule was the de facto standard, offering retirees a simple formula for how much of their nest egg they could withdraw each year in order to make it last for 30 years. (Remember: the safe withdrawal rate is not law, but rather a suggested guide from financial planners.)
In recent years, the benchmark has come under fire from finance experts, including Suze Orman, who say the rule has become a cookie-cutter prescription that doesn't account for retirees' varied financial needs.
Orman says those who need a target should consider 3%to stretch their money as long as possible, while the financial adviser credited with coining the rule, Bill Bengen, now says the rate should be 4.7%.
Morningstar's updated analysis points to 3.7% as its new suggested rate, down slightly from 4% in 2024, but what is the reason behind this?
Morningstar's downward revision stems from a combination of economic and demographic factors:
Market uncertainty: After years of market turbulence, including fluctuating interest rates, retirees face increased risks to their investments.
Persistent inflation: Although inflation has cooled somewhat since its peak in 2022-2023, it remains above pre-pandemic levels, making everyday expenses more costly.
Longevity trends: Canadians are living longer, which means retirees must plan for more years of spending — potentially, 30 to 40 years in retirement.
These factors underscore the need for a cautious approach to withdrawals, especially in the early years of retirement when overspending can have long-term consequences.
Knowing what rate is best for you starts with understanding your retirement savings and expected expenses. Let's say you've saved $900,000 for retirement.
Using the new 3.7% guideline, you'd withdraw $33,300 annually. By contrast, the 4% rule equates to withdrawing $36,000 annually.
Now, compare this number to your expected yearly expenses. If your spending exceeds your withdrawal amount, you may need to explore ways to cut costs, boost income or supplement withdrawals with other savings or investments.
For retirees with diverse portfolios, adjusting withdrawals based on market conditions can also help preserve savings. For example, in years when the market performs well, you might take out slightly more, while pulling back during downturns to protect your principal.

Adopting the right withdrawal strategy is crucial for retirees navigating today's uncertain economic landscape. Here are a few approaches to consider:
The 3.7% rule: Stick to the updated safe withdrawal rate, recalibrating annually to account for changes in expenses and portfolio performance. This conservative approach prioritizes long-term stability.
Bucket strategy: Divide your assets into 'buckets' based on short-, medium- and long-term needs. For example, cash or bonds for immediate expenses and stocks for long-term growth.
Dynamic withdrawals: Adjust withdrawals based on portfolio returns. In good years, withdraw more; in bad years, reduce spending to extend the longevity of your savings.
Each strategy has its risks and rewards. The 3.7% rule offers simplicity and a steady income but may feel too restrictive for retirees with large savings or shorter life expectancies. Dynamic strategies provide flexibility, but require careful monitoring and may not work for those who prefer predictable income.
Taking out more than 3.7% annually might seem tempting, especially if you have a substantial nest egg or immediate financial needs.
But there are risks: Withdrawing too much early in retirement increases the likelihood of depleting your savings later — particularly if market conditions worsen.
On the flip side, retirees with shorter life expectancies or guaranteed income sources, like pensions, may justify higher withdrawal rates.
For instance, someone with $900,000 saved and a $30,000 annual pension might comfortably withdraw 4% to 5% of their savings without jeopardizing their financial future.
The lower safe withdrawal rate for 2025 is a wake-up call for retirees to reassess their financial plans.
If you're nearing retirement or already retired, consider reevaluating your budget to identify discretionary expenses you can trim to reduce withdrawals. Explore part-time work, annuities or rental income to supplement savings.
A professional can help you create a tailored withdrawal strategy that aligns with your goals and risk tolerance.

Up 64% in 2025, is it too late to consider buying BAE Systems shares for defence exposure?

BAE Systems (LSE: BA.) shares have soared in 2025. Year to date, they're up 64% on the back of concerns over America's commitment to NATO and the recent conflict in the Middle East. Is it too late to consider buying them after this enormous share price gain? Let's take a look at the current set-up for the defence contractor. Looking at the FTSE 100 stock today, my view is that it's probably not too late to consider it for a portfolio, despite its monster gains this year. There are a few reasons why. One is that global defence spending is likely to rise significantly in the years ahead. Up until recently, NATO countries had set a target of 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) for their defence budgets. However, at NATO's 2025 summit in the Netherlands last week, members endorsed a plan to massively ramp up spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035. That's a material increase and it should translate to more contracts and higher revenues for companies such as BAE Systems. Another reason is that the valuation doesn't look crazy. If we look ahead to 2026, the consensus earnings per share (EPS) forecast is 83.4p (11% higher than the forecast for 2025). At today's share price of 1,887p, that puts BAE Systems shares on a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of about 22.6. That's well above the FTSE 100 average, but it doesn't strike me as that high given the supportive backdrop and high level of projected earnings growth. Having said all that, defence is a competitive industry. And a risk with this stock is that other companies, such as Rheinmetall, RTX, and Northrop Grumman, could be awarded major contracts instead. It's worth noting that these three companies all offer very relevant solutions today. RTX, for example, offers the Patriot missile defence system, which uses radars, command-and-control technology, and multiple types of interceptors to detect, identify, and eliminate aerial threats. Given the uncertainty over contracts, I think it could be safer to consider playing the defence theme through an exchange-traded fund (ETF) that provides access to a range of different companies in the industry. That's how I'm playing it personally. I've invested in the HANetf Future of Defence UCITS ETF, which gives me exposure to all of the companies listed above, as well as a bunch of AI/cybersecurity stocks such as CrowdStrike and Palantir. Overall, it gives me exposure to about 60 different stocks. This ETF isn't foolproof, of course. If geopolitical tension dies down or sentiment towards defence/cybersecurity stocks sours, the ETF could take a hit. I think it's worth considering as a long-term investment, however. To my mind, the defence industry is set for growth and I think this product is a great way to get exposure. Anteros Returns High-Grade Lead-Zinc-Silver in Surface Samples from the MMZ at its Havens Steady VMS Property, Newfoundland

St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador--(Newsfile Corp. - July 3, 2025) - Anteros Metals Inc. (CSE: ANT) ("Anteros" or the "Company") is pleased to announce assay results from six grab samples collected at the Main Mineralized Zone ("MMZ") of its wholly-owned, road-accessible Havens Steady VMS Property ("Havens Steady" or the "Property") in central Newfoundland. These samples confirm high-grade lead-zinc-silver mineralization at surface and show associated gold and copper enrichment consistent with a polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide ("VMS") system. The grab samples were collected during a recent field visit, focused on confirming the tenor and extent of exposed mineralization within the MMZ. All samples were collected from bedrock outcroppings of gossanous surface material. Surface grab sample highlights are given in Table 1, below. Table 1: Outcrop grab sample1 highlights Sample ID Pb (%) Zn (%) Cu (%) Ag (g/t) Au (g/t) HS-25-004 1.56 9.60 0.15 45.0 0.366 HS-25-003 0.46 1.66 0.22 38.4 0.513 HS-25-006 0.06 0.40 0.30 26.1 0.568 HS-25-005 0.30 0.85 0.11 19.0 0.238 HS-25-001 0.10 0.07 0.04 5.5 0.043 1 Grab samples are selected samples and may not represent true underlying mineralization "These samples support the surface expression of MMZ, which we model as a laterally extensive high-grade zone," stated Trumbull Fisher, CEO of Anteros Metals. "The enrichment in base and precious metals positions the MMZ as a high-priority target for trenching and drill targeting later this season." GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT The MMZ lies within a strongly prospective segment of the Exploits Subzone, an established host to VMS-style deposits in central Newfoundland. The Property area is characterized by felsic to intermediate volcaniclastics that are variably silicified and gossanous at surface. Historical drilling within the Property has documented high-grade VMS-style mineralization, and recent data compilation has revealed copper and gold enriched zones within the MMZ (see May 1, 2025 news release). These results build on recent prospecting at Havens Steady, where sampling revealed angular float boulders with multi-percent copper grades along-strike from the MMZ (see June 16, 2025 news release), reinforcing the zones potential for further exploration (Figure 1). Figure 1: Interpreted Property Geology with MMZ and Outcrop Grab Sample Locations To view an enhanced version of this graphic, please visit: NEXT STEPS The Company plans to commence a targeted trenching program at the MMZ in the coming weeks, with the aim of exposing and mapping the mineralized zone in detail. Results from trenching will guide a potential Phase I drill program planned for fall 2025, designed to test the down-dip and along-strike extent of mineralization. QA/QC AND ANALYTICAL METHODS Samples were collected by Anteros personnel and submitted to Eastern Analytical Ltd. ("EAL"), an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory located in Springdale, Newfoundland. EAL regularly inserts certified blanks, reference standards, and sample duplicates into sample sequences to maintain accuracy and precision of results. Multi-element geochemistry was estimated using a 200mg subsample, dissolved in a four-acid solution, and analyzed with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy ("ICP-OES"). Overlimit assays, including lead, zinc, and silver, were completed using multi-acid digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy ("AAS"). Gold was estimated through fire assay and AAS of a 30g subsample. ABOUT THE PROPERTY Located approximately 40 kilometres southeast of Buchans, the Havens Steady Property hosts a laterally extensive polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulphide ("VMS") system within the Storm Brook Formation of the Red Cross Group in the Exploits Subzone of the Dunnage Zone, a prolific metallogenic belt in central Newfoundland. The Property benefits from existing road infrastructure and proximity to hydroelectric power. The region hosts active exploration and world class VMS deposits including the past-producing Duck Pond Mine. The Company cautions that mineralization hosted on adjacent and/or nearby properties is not necessarily indicative of mineralization on the Property. Since acquiring the Property in January 2024, Anteros has compiled an extensive historical dataset that includes airborne electromagnetic surveys, geochemical surveys, and over 15,000 metres of historical drilling. Documented mineralization includes sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and bornite in high-grade polymetallic zones. The known system has a strike length of over a kilometre and remains open at depth.
