American in UK visits Sainsbury's and is floored by 'absurd' item

Daily Mirror11-07-2025
Paige Wester, who moved to the UK from the United States, has visited a Sainsbury's supermarket for the first time and has shared what she thinks of the shopping experience compared to back home
An American woman who visited a Sainsbury's supermarket has taken to social media to share with her compatriots the many stark differences to similar shops in her native country. Paige Wester detailed her shopping experience in a TikTok video, which she began by declaring that there are "things in a UK grocery store that would send Americans into a coma".
The first items that caught Paige's eye were eggs as she highlighted that in the UK they are "never refrigerated". However, she also acknowledged how cheap they are compared to back home, pointing to a box of 10 from the Sainsbury's Stamford Street budget range priced at £1.64. "You just cannot get that in America," she said.

Paige then headed to the cereal aisle where she held aloft a box of Kellogg's Frosties. "They have frosted flakes here, but they're not called frosted flakes," she continued. "They're called Frosties!"
Tea was next for scrutiny, meanwhile. "This aisle is absolutely insane to me," Paige confessed. "It is an entire aisle just dedicated to different types of teas. I didn't even know this much tea existed in the world."
Paige then moved on to coffee as she confessed that she hadn't realised so many Brits are "obsessed" with instant granules. "I hadn't had instant coffee until I moved here - and I must say it's not that good," she exclaimed.

The American then headed to the freezer section, where she informed her followers that people in the UK "love to make anything into a pie". Noting the Pukka and Birdseye brands in particular, she revealed: "We've got steak pies, chicken pies, veg pies... don't get me wrong, I love a good pie, but not everything needs to be inside of one.
"Also British people love a cottage pie - I don't even know what that is, but apparently it's really good."
Paige then warned that this is "where things get really scary" as she grabbed a packet of black pudding. "This is a staple in most people's households," she claimed, before informing her fellow Americans what it "actually is". She said: "It's pigs' blood and people eat it for breakfast - this package says 'from breakfast to fine dining,' and that is absolutely absurd to me.

On to fresh produce, Paige explained that in the US when you are picking out fruit and vegetables there are plastic bags to put them in. However, she noted: "In England, you either have to pay for a bag or just raw dog them into your car."
"This is something I will never get on board with, but British people love their baked beans," Paige added. "There are so many different kinds and aisles of baked beans in the grocery store." She closed by informing her American followers: "People eat them for breakfast, lunch... they'll eat them for dinner. There are a million different brands of them."
Paige closed by expressing her frustration that UK shoppers have to pay for grocery bags. "Yes we are saving the planet by bringing our own, but if you are like me and forget them all the time, then you are screwed."

One British TikTok user joked in response: "What's weirder than a tea aisle is an aisle dedicated to 50 kinds of Oreos, and 50 kinds of Pringles."
A second person told Paige: "You don't need plastic for fruit or veg, just wash it when you get home or use a paper one. The plastic doesn't get re-used and is so bad environmentally."
A third quipped: "How you view the tea aisle is the same as when I go into an American supermarket and go down the salad dressing aisle."
Whilst a fourth offered a recommendation: "Cottage pie is the most heartwarming meal in UK! It's soooo good, I dare you to dislike it!"

New MasterChef hosts 'confirmed' after Gregg Wallace axing

An independent review commissioned by production company Banijay into misconduct allegations against Gregg Wallace upheld 45 of the 83 claims, leading to his removal from the cooking programme. Torode was also fired after racial language accusations were levied against him. It was claimed that he used the "N-word" on two separate occasions while working at the broadcaster. A post shared by MasterChef UK (@masterchefuk) Now, it has been 'confirmed' that Saturday Kitchen's Matt Tebbutt is taking over one of the vacant positions after the axing of Gregg Wallace and John Torode. According to The Sun, BBC chef Andi Oliver, who currently stars in Great British Menu, is also joining him. A source told the publication: "Matt is seen as a really safe pair of hands by the BBC. He has been in the frame for some time and is now being lined up for MasterChef. "The BBC are keen to bring Andi Oliver on board too. She has been so popular as host of the Great British Menu. "They're not sure if she can commit at this stage because of her schedule with that show but everyone is hoping they can get her on board." A post shared by MasterChef UK Casting Account (@masterchefukcasting) The source added: "Everyone loves Andi and she would be perfect for the role in many ways. "She is very talented on her own merit but she would also help bring a more diverse look for the show, which is much needed. "The last thing the show wants is to be slapped with being 'pale, and stale' by a new generation of food lovers." According to IMDb, Matt Tebbutt is an actor and presenter who is known for starring in a number of shows like Saturday Kitchen and Food Unwrapped. The British chef and presenter often filled in for James Martin on Saturday Kitchen before becoming a regular face on the programme. He is also married to Lisa Tebbutt and has two children. Andi Oliver is also a British chef and presenter who has starred in a number of shows over her successful career, including Great British Menu, where she is a judge. She is also a radio presenter and former singer who has authored the book The Pepperpot Diaries: Stories From My Caribbean Table.

Then in 2000, Bubka landed a job with talkSPORT, bringing his iconic New York tones to the UK sport radio station. And his standing in golf saw him respected and revered by all. That included two of the greatest golfers of all time - Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Nicklaus was made an honourary citizen of St Andrews in 2022 and personally invited his dear friend Bubka to be there. And even the notoriously private Woods went out of his way to greet Bubka at The Open that year, seeking him out after a press conference after the iconic broadcaster travelled to the event despite poor health. Rubert Bell of talkSPORT paid an emotional tribute to his great friend and colleague. Bell said: 'Radio is about voice. There is no doubt when you heard Bob Bubka speak, it just grabbed you. 'Unmistakable, iconic, coupled with a wonderful, unique style. For over 25 years, his distinctive American tones enthralled and entertained talkSPORT listeners. 'His love for the game of golf shone through, coupled with a cheeky, almost rebellious element which made him not only a delight to listen to - but in my case - to work with. Baffled Rory McIlroy hits TWO balls with ONE shot in incredible never-seen-before incident at The Open 'Bob was unashamedly biased when it came to Tiger Woods - in awe of his achievements - particularly as he had been brought up in the Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer era. It was a testament to Bob that Tiger always seemed to reach out and say hello. 'In later years, Bob's health made it difficult to travel and his last Open in situ was at St Andrews in 2022. 'He loved being there - and the relish in which he drove his motorised wheelchair around the city was fantastic. 'But what he also loved was the interaction with talkSPORT listeners - and I know in the end, being part of the talkSPORT family was so important to him as he struggled with ill health. 'Even when physically frail, that voice never faltered. Covering the majors will never be the same without that delicious voice drawing us into the magnificent sport of golf.' Others in the golfing world took to social media to post their messages and memories. Mike Parry said: "I'm really saddened to hear of the death of my great pal and legendary golf commentator Bob Bubka. "He was THE best with an incomparably silky voice and unparalleled knowledge of the game. I worked six Opens with him. Joyous professional days... RIP Big Man." Jonathan Norman added: "After marvelling at his voice and broadcasting style for a decade, it was one of my career highs to work with Bob at the 2014 Ryder Cup. "He will be missed greatly. Thoughts with Janice and all Bob's family and friends. RIP." Another wrote: "RIP Bob Bubka….. the voice of golf." And a final user wrote: "Ahhh such sad news. RIP Bob Bubka, the voice of golf. Could listen to him all day."

British man orders McDonald's in Benidorm and cost of two meals leaves him floored

A man was left gobsmacked when he purchased two meals from McDonald's in Benidorm, wondering why it was that price. He also complimented the view from the restaurant No matter where in Europe you go, chances are, you won't be too far away from a McDonald's. It's cheap, cheerful, and if you're a fussy eater in need of some home comforts while you're away, it's the perfect place to nip with pals. But when one Brit in Benidorm ordered two meals from the Spanish Maccies, he was left floored at how much it cost him. ‌ "Could this be the nicest McDonald's in the whole entire world?" Harry, who posts on TikTok as @harrytokky, asked his followers. He showed the view from the Maccies, saying: "You're not gonna get better than this." Unlike your typical Maccies outlets, this one looks out onto the sea. ‌ But he then joked "who cares about the view," saying that he was going to go inside because he was "desperate for a Happy Meal". ‌ Sitting outside, he said: "And just like that, the food has arrived. Now you will not believe how cheap this was. We've got two meals here. Guess how much this costs? €11 (£9.53)". Harry continued, explaining that there are two fries, two burgers, two drinks, and some chicken nuggets on the side as well. ‌ He gushed: "I mean, €11? What do you think guys? I think that's an absolute bargain, let's be honest. €11? In the UK, that'd probably be at least £20." In the UK, a large Big Mac meal costs around £7.69, depending on location. Meanwhile, six chicken nuggets cost around £3.49, depending on location. So Harry is right, it is significantly cheaper in Benidorm. The whole meal would cost roughly £18.87, which is 98% more expensive! ‌ While some people in the comments section moaned that Benidorm McDonald's has "slow" service, others said the wait was well worth it. One said they'd had the "best Big Mac" ever at the Benidorm Maccies, while another gushed it was the "best view" you'll get under the Golden Arches. However, the taste may differ. One visitor remarked: "Their chicken nuggets are definitely different from English ones". People have also taken to TripAdvisor to share their experiences of Benidorm's McDonald's. One said it was a "fantastic" place to get "cheap food on vacation" while in Spain. Meanwhile, another reviewer wrote: "Visited this McDonald's as we wanted something like home while on holidays, and it was a great experience. I got the McCrispy Burger meal, and we got the bacon & cheese wedges for sharing, and it was all so delicious! "It came out slightly colder than we would have liked, but we still ate it. The restaurant was clean and the staff were lovely! "We used the machines as you entered to order our food, and they provided all languages. McFlurry was great as well. Will definitely be recommending to friends and family".
