MGNREGA ‘scam': Dahod court dismisses police revision plea against bail to Khabad's sons
The Dahod court rejected the plea of the district police challenging the bail order of Wednesday, following which, the process for the release of Khabad brothers from judicial custody started, lawyers of the Khabads told The Indian Express. Among the bail conditions, the court has directed Balvantsinh and Kiran Khabad to submit a bond of Rs 50,000 each, as well as prohibition from entering Dahod district until the investigation in the case is completed. They have, however, been asked to appear before the investigating officer whenever required.
Advocate AR Chauhan, representing the Khabad brothers, told The Indian Express that the court had directed the brothers to cooperate in the further investigations.
'The Sessions court has upheld the regular bail granted to Balvantsinh and Kiran Khabad on Wednesday… The police application was rejected. They will comply with the conditions.'
On Wednesday, a court granted Balvantsinh and Kiran Khabad regular bail in the case of the alleged MGNREGA scam unearthed in the villages of Devgarh Baria and Dhanpur district. Chauhan had argued on the grounds that the firms of Balvantsinh and Kiran were involved in supplying material and did not have a contract to complete the work on the ground. Their liability cannot be made out in the case of non-completion of MGNREGA projects as they only supplied the material and it was not their task to see if the material was used for completing the roads.
Senior officials of Dahod police remained unavailable for comment on Thursday. A total of 14 persons have been arrested in the alleged scam so far.

Mumbai police extradite man from Trinidad and Tobago for cyber extortion threats to Zeeshan Siddique
Mumbai: In a first-of-its-kind operation, the Mumbai Police successfully extradited a 33-year-old man, Mohammed Dilshad Naushad, a native of Darbhanga in Bihar, from the island nation of Trinidad and Tobago for allegedly sending extortion threats to NCP leader Zeeshan Siddique, posing as a D-Company operative. Dilshad, originally a resident of Darbhanga, Bihar, was arrested upon arrival at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport based on a Look Out Circular (LOC) issued through Interpol. In April, Zeeshan Siddiqui lodged a complaint of receiving death threats via mail, claiming to be from 'D' company, demanding protection money of Rs 10 crore. What baffled the security agencies was the fact that the threat sender dismissed police investigations and denied Lawrence Bishnoi's involvement in Baba Siddiqui's murder. Dilshad sent a series of threatening emails to Zeeshan Siddique, son of slain former MLA Baba Siddique, demanding Rs 10 crore in "protection money". The emails, sent between April 19 and 21, 2025, warned Siddique of a fate similar to his father's if the ransom was not paid. What alarmed investigators was the explicit mention of D-Company and the dismissal of Lawrence Bishnoi's involvement in Baba Siddiqui's murder, suggesting an attempt to mislead ongoing investigations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Container Houses Indonesia (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The Bandra police registered an FIR against the unknown email sender, and the Anti Extortion Cell (AEC) of the crime branch started a parallel investigation with the help of the cyber cell and Google officials. During the investigation, the IP address traced the origin of the threat emails to IP addresses in Trinidad and Tobago. "Through technical surveillance, Dilshad's identity was confirmed, and we sent a request to that country through Interpol Informal Request (IR) for his detention," said an official. With the help of the External Affairs Ministry, the police were able to extradite Naushad. When he landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminals in Mumbai, Naushad was placed under arrest. This marks the first instance of Mumbai Police extraditing an accused from Trinidad and Tobago, highlighting growing international cooperation in cyber-extortion cases. Upon his arrival on July 31, Dilshad was detained, and a Galaxy A14 mobile phone, SIM cards, and his passport were seized. He was booked under IPC Sections 308(4) and 351(3) at Bandra Police Station. The Anti-Extortion Cell secured his remand for further interrogation to probe possible links with organised crime syndicates. Baba Siddique, 66, was shot dead outside his son Zeeshan's office in Bandra (East) on Oct 12, 2024. Police arrested around 26 accused and invoked MCOCA against members of the Anmol Bishnoi gang.

Ghaziabad ‘love jihad' case: Muslim man arrested again despite Hindu wife denying abduction claim
The police in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad on Friday arrested a Muslim man on charges of abducting his Hindu wife, despite the woman saying in a video two days earlier that she left home of her own will. The man, Akbar Khan, and the woman, Sonika Chauhan, got married in August 2022. They had, however, not been living together as Chauhan's family objected to their relationship. The couple had eloped on May 24, after which local Bharatiya Janata Party leaders stepped in to help the Chauhans separate the couple and bring Sonika back to her family. Khan was arrested for the same offence on May 25, but was released on bail on June 8. Scroll had reported on the couple's ordeal at the time. A mob that claimed that the couple's marriage was a case of 'love jihad' had vandalised their businesses on May 26. Love jihad is a Hindutva conspiracy theory that holds that Muslim men pose as Hindus to trick Hindu women into relationships with the aim of converting them to Islam. In the early hours of July 30, the couple managed to run away again, reported The Indian Express. A member of Khan's family, who requested not to be identified, told Scroll that they went to Prayagraj to seek protection from the Allahabad High Court. On the same day, the Ghaziabad Police filed a new case against Khan and four others under provisions related to abduction, using poisonous substances to cause hurt, theft and criminal intimidation. The case was filed based on a complaint by Sonika's father Laxman Singh Chauhan. The complainant alleged that Khan had been threatening the family in the days leading up to his daughter's supposed abduction. He claimed that an intoxicating substance had rendered them unconscious on the night when the couple eloped again. Additionally, he claimed that Rs 50,000 and some jewellery were also missing from their home since then. However, soon after the couple ran away on July 30, Sonika released a video declaring that she had left her home on her own because her family was 'mentally and physically torturing' her. She said that for the past two months, her parents and local BJP leaders had been forcing her to testify against Khan. Ghaziabad interfaith couple: Nearly two months after the father of a 25-year-old woman in Ghaziabad accused her in-laws of kidnapping her, only for the daughter to claim that she has entered into an interfaith marriage by choice, her family filed a complaint at the Indirapuram… — The Indian Express (@IndianExpress) July 31, 2025 Nevertheless, the police on Thursday brought the couple back to Ghaziabad. Khan's family claimed that the police acted so swiftly because of political pressure. However, Indirapuram Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhishek Srivastava denied the allegations of political pressure. 'We are investigating the case based on the complaint by the woman's father,' he said. 'Her statement will be duly recorded.' On Friday, the police arrested Khan, his brother Maksad and their neighbour Lalit Ayyar, according to Ravendra Gautam, station house officer of the Indirapuram police station. Gautam said that the police are investigating whether Sonika was 'under pressure' to record the July 30 video. 'She is with her family now,' he added. 'Her statement will be recorded in court whenever she is comfortable.'
