President Benedict Oramah takes a bow at the Afreximbank Annual Meetings (AAM2025) after a decade of servant leadership

Zawya2 days ago
Professor Benedict Okechukwu Oramah, CON, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) (www.Afreximbank.com) has taken a bow from serving at the helm of the institution for the last decade; a period that has been touted as transformational and exceptional.
While giving his closing speech during the AAM2025, Professor Oramah took the audience down memory lane, from June 2015 when shareholders gave him a leadership mandate in Lusaka, Zambia, saying that; 'In my acceptance speech, I made a solemn promise to the shareholders, to deliver a solid bank that will be a leader among its peers in all measures of financial performance to quickly grow the capital of the Bank in absolute terms, to improve capitalisation through innovative capital management initiatives to ensure first-class risk management, and achieve adequate returns to shareholders.'
Professor Oramah highlighted the achievements of the Bank during his tenure, some under very extreme situations, citing the financial rise thus 'we have collectively, over the past decade, built a solid financial institution that is good for Global Africa. Total assets and guarantees grew more than eight-fold between September 2015 and April 2025, to reach 43.5 billion US dollars. Total Revenues also rose seven-fold, reaching 3.24 billion US dollars, from 408 million US dollars in 2025. Net income amounted to about 1 billion US dollars last year, about 700% increase, from its level of 125 million US dollars in 2015. Internal capital generation and very strong support of shareholders through significant additional equity investments, saw shareholders' funds rise from about 1 billion US dollars in September 2015 to 7.5 billion US dollars in April 2025, with callable capital reaching 4.5 billion US dollars from 450 million US dollars in September 2015. Liquidity remained strong, with sources of funding much more diversified in 2024 than in 2015, due to activities of the Africa Resource Mobilisation Unit, which saw the share of African sources of funding rise from 11.7 percent in 2015 to 36.6 percent in May 2025.'
Going forward, Prof Oramah said that the Bank would like to give priority to the financing and promoting of high-value exports that have the capability of stabilising export revenues and creating jobs thereby raising and stabilising trade and economy in Africa.
H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who spoke at the official opening ceremony, appreciated the contribution of Afreximbank to the growth and stability of the economy of Nigeria and by extension Africa at large, saying 'Nigeria's collaboration with Afreximbank is expanding in both scope and breadth through various avenues including but not limited to the oil industry, and food production through fertilizer manufacturer through financing and Nigeria appreciates Afreximbank as a strategic partner in co creation which positively impacts the lives of Africans and helps transform the Continent.'
In recognition of the outstanding work done my Professor Oramah over the last 10 years and in the last 3 decades at Afreximbank, President Tinubu on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, awarded Prof. Oramah one of Nigeria's highest state commendations: The G rand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

Crypto Biz: Peter Thiel eyes the SVB throne

Peter Thiel and other tech billionaires have reportedly spotted a major market opportunity in the void left by Silicon Valley Bank's (SVB) 2023 collapse. They are now planning to launch a new financial institution — named after a Lord of the Rings reference — to serve crypto companies and startups that have struggled to secure financing since SVB's downfall. SVB's dramatic collapse in 2023 triggered contagion across the US banking sector and led to tighter lending standards. While its assets were later acquired by First Citizens Bank, no institution has stepped in to fill SVB's unique role — until now. For context: Before its collapse, SVB banked nearly half of all venture-backed technology and life sciences companies in the United States. This week's Crypto Biz dives into Thiel's latest bet, a new recovery system for institutional crypto investors, and Michael Saylor's Strategy, whose massive crypto windfall in Q2 comes with a significant asterisk. Billionaire group wants to build SVB competitor Billionaires Peter Thiel, Palmer Luckey and Joe Lonsdale have filed for a bank charter for Erebor, a new financial institution aimed at serving startups, cryptocurrency companies and other so-called risky businesses, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. The tech group hopes to fill the gap left by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank — a potentially lucrative, if volatile, market. Thiel is no stranger to digital assets. He's an outspoken Bitcoin advocate and has also invested in Bullish, a crypto exchange that has reportedly filed for an initial public offering in the United States. Circuit launches crypto recovery system for institutions 'Most people aren't equipped for true self-custody,' says Harry Donnelly, founder and CEO of Circuit, which has just launched an enterprise-grade recovery solution for digital assets. Powered by Automatic Asset Extraction (AAE) technology, Circuit's system helps institutions avoid catastrophic, permanent losses of digital assets. The solution has gone live with two institutional clients: UAE-based custodian Tungsten and Palisade, a crypto infrastructure company. 'Institutions view asset recovery as a fundamental requirement, not a nice-to-have,' Donnelly said. 'As more enterprises hold digital assets, ensuring those assets don't simply disappear becomes critical. The institutional mindset is about risk management and fiduciary duty.' Circuit's launch comes amid estimates that between 11% and 18% of Bitcoin's fixed supply is already lost forever. Strategy set to post massive Bitcoin gains in Q2 Business intelligence firm turned Bitcoin treasury company Strategy is expected to report $13 billion in unrealized gains from its digital asset holdings, even as its core business continues to struggle. Strategy has amassed 597,325 BTC, generating a Bitcoin yield of 7.8% in the second quarter, according to Chairman and founder Michael Saylor. The company continued to stack sats last week, acquiring $531 million worth of BTC. Despite this crypto windfall, Strategy's software business is projected to generate $112.8 million in revenue in the second quarter, a decline from the previous year. Strategy's bold Bitcoin bet has become a case study for dozens of companies that have adopted similar approaches. According to Cointelegraph, 250 businesses now hold Bitcoin, with 26 announcing BTC treasury strategies just last month. Robinhood launches layer-2 on Arbitrum Robinhood, the digital brokerage with over 25 million users, is expanding its push into digital assets by launching a dedicated layer-2 blockchain on Arbitrum for trading tokenized stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs). The new tokenization initiative will give investors in the European Union access to more than 200 US stock and ETF tokens. The announcement comes just days after Robinhood introduced micro futures contracts for Bitcoin, Solana and XRP. This latest move builds on Robinhood's broader advocacy for pro-tokenization legislation in the United States, as it works toward launching a real-world asset exchange. Morocco, Ecuador Reiterate Willingness to Further Bolster Bilateral Ties

The Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Ecuador reiterated on Friday in Rabat their mutual willingness to further strengthen the development of their bilateral relations. Following the meeting held between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr. Nasser Bourita, and the Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Mrs. Gabriela Sommerfeld, both parties underscored the outstanding bilateral ties of friendship and solidarity, and agreed on the importance of sustaining these exchanges and regularly reviewing them to further strengthen cooperation. The ministers stressed that International Law is fundamentally based on mutual respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of States, as well as on fulfilling obligations under treaties and other sources of international law. Bourita and Sommerfeld said they were pleased with the convergence of their views on regional and international issues and reiterated their commitment to working for global peace and security. They agreed to pool efforts to address global challenges within various international and multilateral bodies, such as climate change, gender issues, human rights, the blue and green agendas, food security, health, pandemic prevention and response, and combating insecurity and corruption. The two sides also tackled the significance of implementing the SDGs in an integrated and holistic manner to eradicate poverty and fight climate change while promoting sustainable land use and water management. During their meeting, the two ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including the situations in Africa and Latin America, and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They reaffirmed the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening mutual understanding, friendship, and cooperation in communication, culture, education, sports, arts, youth, civil society, and the economy. They also expressed their strong commitment to boosting investments through fluid commercial information exchange, promoting strategic alliances with the private sector, and actively supporting initiatives that facilitate and expand bilateral trade, in order to multiply business opportunities and explore the potential for diversified trade and investment between the two countries. The two parties explored collaborative prospects within various Atlantic cooperation initiatives. They also voiced their aspiration to make this space a geostrategic framework for dialogue, aimed at promoting development and ensuring security and solidarity, as well as bringing together the peoples of the Global South and North. Regarding migration, Morocco and Ecuador commended the efforts made in the area, especially within the framework of the Marrakesh Pact, the Rabat Process, and the Los Angeles Declaration, and reaffirmed their shared commitment to dynamic mobility that enables a safe, smooth, and orderly movement of people. The two officials also expressed their shared will to further strengthen the bilateral legal framework to address common areas of interest in cooperation. To this end, the ministers welcomed the signing of two legal instruments: a Memorandum of Understanding on diplomatic training and exchange of experiences between Morocco's Institute of Training, Research, and Diplomatic Studies (IMFRED) and the "Galo Plaza Lasso" Diplomatic Academy of the Ecuadorian Foreign Affairs Ministry; and a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a mechanism for bilateral political consultations.
